"What do you pixie eyes see Esa?" "The cover of the Druid Grove would suit us, if they are not already there". "Our job is to hold off any force coming this way, as long as we dont go to far out, we can respond if they somehow sneak behind us. Always go for the head of the snake, their leaders, their priests. We dont have to beat them all, their rabble may not even want to fight once their leaders are gone"
Augustin agrees. A lot of these troops do not battle ready and we may be able to reinforce our own lines if we take down the leaders. People will do a lot to be on the winning side. They will do even more do be on the right side. I think a large number of people have changed sides to survive. Lets take back our brothers and sisters.
RL uses Wild shape to summon a wild companion owl familiar and sends it out over the farm to go scout and report back. it lasts for 2 hours so hopefully thats plenty of time
Yep the owl flies over to the farm and sees some hobgoblins torching the place. Some are keeping an eye on the druid's grove, and some are looking towards Albridge. There is about a dozen of them.
RL would be keen to ensure the druid grove is kept save in particular but also the farm if its possible. Te guesses the question is where do we station the troops, do we bring them with us or part way up or close to the town
More to the east, closer to the river, the farms are closer together. You see a small spire of smoke coming from one about a mile away. Some screams as well come on the wind.

if its within 2 hours RL will send his familiar over this area as well to report back to the party
The owl heads off, and reports this is a larger group of hobgoblins, with one small group that appears to include a leader and a spellcaster. The farms, fences, and gardens means they cannot act as a force and are broken into smaller groups. Farmers and families are running away from them towards the village, and the hobgoblins are making no attempt to stop them. Occasionally a farmer or worker will try to keep them away from their farm and they are cut down.
"They're looking for us on the road, let's stay off it, cut due east of the road and go across farmland. try and cut the head off again. If they are just trying to distract us from a following army, we at least have a chance of seeing them alongside the river or farmland. less chance of getting cut off" "Owl or pixie do you see anything due east of here?"
Grimbald has goblinoids as his favoured enemy. He knows that hobgoblins measure virtue by physical strength and martial prowess, caring about nothing except skill and cunning in battle. They are competitive, even between different hobgoblin armies, which they call legions.
Hobgoblins have a strong grasp of tactics and discipline, and can carry out sophisticated battle plans under the direction of a strategically minded leader. However, they hate elves and attack them first in battle over any other opponents, even if doing so would be a tactical error.

Thats where the commander, spell caster and larger group of hobgoblins is isnt it? can the owl please take a broader sweep to the east and around this group again
The group are much closer now. They haven't set fire to any more farms, perhaps not wanting to give their advance away. The owl also notices the smaller group of hobgoblins to the north are now on the move, heading towards Albridge. They do not appear to be trying to hide, whereas the ones to the east most definitely are. The smaller group to the north are giving a wide berth to the Druid's Grove.
The eastern group is the larger group with the leader and spellcaster. But they are divided into smaller groups. A group of hobgoblin scouts advances in front of the groups, and the groups only advance when the scouts tell them to.
Grimbald educates the troop as best he can. "Let's head for their leaders, remember they are heavily armoured, are proficient with sword and LONG bow. They are lethal when their allies get within hand to hand. Elves, they hate your guts, use it. Don't let them get into hand to hand, use your speed, disengage and disperse them." "Augustin, you may not be the pointy end of the fanatics this time around, your time to shine I'll scout the right flank, and target any hobgobbo that makes it into melee. "
Israfen nods. "We'll hold this ground and act as bait. If you have spells that can slow and injure them, all the better, we can get more arrows away. But you'll need to take care of the spellcaster especially, and the hobgoblin commander. He might be able to order them into avoiding the killing ground, and a damaging area of effect spell will likely hurt us badly, we do not have much in the way of armour. I have taken the liberty of sending a messenger to see if we can get the services of a druid from the front line."
About this time you hear a roar and the clash of weapons. The Iron Circle have attacked from the south, perhaps having seen the smoke from the farm buildings and that was their signal. They are trying to take the bridge, thinking that the Albridge forces are now divided.
"We've wasted too much time, let's get these bastards"
<if within an hour of conflict>
"Israfen, I wouldn't ask a friend to do what I wouldn't do myself, how do I look?" Israfen turns to Grimbald has transformed into a likeness of himself <Disguise Self>

"Hobgoblins, certainly not rabble. And they're expecting us. Can we squirt the Druid Grove and surprise them at all?"

You can certainly try to squirt them by surprise.
More to the east, closer to the river, the farms are closer together. You see a small spire of smoke coming from one about a mile away. Some screams as well come on the wind.

Grimbalds definitely been hanging out with Augustin for too long

Hobgoblin Commander:
Thats where the commander, spell caster and larger group of hobgoblins is isnt it? can the owl please take a broader sweep to the east and around this group again
This will be the last sweep the owl can do.
Some of the displaced people are on you now, they tell you what you already know, then disappear into the village.
Both groups of hobgoblins are advancing more quickly now.
Grimbald educates the troop as best he can. "Let's head for their leaders, remember they are heavily armoured, are proficient with sword and LONG bow. They are lethal when their allies get within hand to hand. Elves, they hate your guts, use it. Don't let them get into hand to hand, use your speed, disengage and disperse them."
