Party have decided to take Israfen's advice. They will skirt to the south of the advancing hobgoblins, using the buildings and river vegetation as cover to aid stealth. Then hit the commander and spellcaster from the side.
Meanwhile the archers will stand in front of an open area in plain sight, goading the hobgoblins to charge at them. The human warriors will be behind them. A druid from the Albridge defence will hopefully be arriving soon to add their support spells. When the hobgoblins are nearly upon them, if any get past the barrage of arrows, then the elves will move behind the human fighters who are better armoured and who will take the hobgoblin charge.
"We've wasted too much time, let's get these bastards"
<if within an hour of conflict>
"Israfen, I wouldn't ask a friend to do what I wouldn't do myself, how do I look?" Israfen turns to Grimbald has transformed into a likeness of himself <Disguise Self>
Israfen makes a sour face. "The beard is not going to pass close inspection. But if I were a hobgoblin seeing you from a distance, I'd want to disembowel you."
Plans made, the party head out, being as stealthy as they can (group stealth check required). You use cover provided by the southernmost buildings and the vegetation near the White River as you make your way past the main body of hobgoblins. Then when you can't see any more, the party move northwards, looking for the command group. And a perception check from everyone too please.
"sneaking past the advancing hobgoblins and manoeuvering to come in from the side, looking for the hobgoblin commander and spellcaster." STEALTH check 17
Esa has been sitting quietly listening to the talks, disinterested and irked, her bad temper bubbling under the surface. Finally, upon hearing there may be a spellcaster, her ears prick up. She moves to Augustin and flicks his neck to get his attention.
"I want that one. But tell the others to keep him whole. He can be my reward, I want something worth studying once all this is over, even if it's some hobgoblin fool. I've done my part with the pitiful minions, let me have something fun." She looks at him with a smirk.
As they travel to the area, her mind is too preoccupied with the idea of getting to properly examine something new once all this is over. She turns Invisible and flies overhead, distracted and murmuring to herself (with a 7 in Stealth and a 0 in perception).
Being careful, and making sure Augustin doesn't stumble and clank, and a preoccupied Esa doesn't fly into a spiderweb or window, you make your way to a point about the distance the command group was lagging behind the main force.
You don't see them initially, wondering if you've misjudged it, then Vakiel notices movement in a window of a house, and a shadow behind another house. They're here but trying to stay hidden for some reason. Then there is a muffled scream, almost followed by a second, and then a ripping, tearing sound that Esa recognises - she heard that sound while spying when devils tore their way into the world through a living sacrifice. She feels the same ripple in the fabric of reality and magic as the world reels from the wound and quickly repairs it.
About the same time arrows come hissing towards the party from two different locations. Someone has a surprise round - and it's not the party.
Hobgoblin scout 1 - two arrows at Rustling Leaves.
At this stage you are sure there are hobgoblins in each building. There is a hobgoblin round the side of the building, there could be more, and the two hobgoblin scouts are in the trees. Tell me where you want the party to be, understanding that you wouldn't know that the hobgoblin scouts were there until they shot at you. You wouldn't be any further north than the road.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
RL will bonus action shift. Wildhunt. While shifted, you have advantage on Wisdom checks, and no creature within 30 feet of you can make an attack roll with advantage against you unless you’re incapacitated.
Cast thorn whip on the archer in the tree to the east. Attack: 7 Damage: 4 and pull them 10 ft closer to me so hopefully out of the tree branches.
Move to the tree to the east to be melee with that archer in case they arent dead
