Eedim walks forward and looks up at the guard, then snaps his fingers under the gurads nose, "Shright!" and walks into the tavern close behind Breccha.
The guard watches Breccha and Eedim with visible disapproval and says to Zaxx, "Seems a moot point master Wizard, you and the dwarf might as well go inside and wait with your friends." He then steps aside and waits for you to follow Breccha and Eedim within.
After you pass he falls in behind and closes the door keeping out the night air. The other guard appears coming down the steps to the upper level and looks at his other with a raised eyebrow. The guard frowns and shakes his head briefly.
Walking through Phandalin...
The Soldier falls in with Titus now following ingrained military habits. From some distance off in the darkness Titus hear's a familiar but barely perceptible growl. It seems that his vulpine companion watches and waits...
"Not much I can tell you Captain that you would not know about the soldiers life. We got the call and mustered yester' afternoon. Were lucky those wizards had their portal up or we'd not even heard of the situation yet. As it is we've been here scant five hours and are still figuring what happened."As you progress into Phandalin you near and then stand before the Townmasters Hall now blackened stones and charcoal timbers.
"That is the source of the smoke you saw. As to the rest, Lord Beddamere will explain, I've been walking the perimeter for the last four hours so know aught else."
The soldier leads you on to the Stonehill Tavern and opens the door allowing you to step in. "Seems your companions came the short way and await you inside Captain."
OOC: I am assuming at this point that Kryinor keeps his distance and follows on in the shadows. If you want him to do anything else I will adjust the post as needed :)
If anyone else would like to do something in the intervening moments of this homecoming the same applies of course :)
Inside the Stonehill Tavern...
Some small time passes while you wait in the common room of the tavern. Tolben walks through from the kitchen rubbing sleep from tired eyes and says, "Thank the Gods your back masters there's been terrible trouble..."
"Quiet Inn keep!" Blares the guard on the stairs." Mind your place and see to our bellies. Tis for Lord Beddamere to talk of such things."
Tolben hurriedly snaps his mouth closed then in nervous tones says, "For give me sergeant, just happy to see my friends is all...Now then...now then, oh yes, some warmed ale for the Heroes of Phandalin?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
If Titus does not give him direction Kryinor will shift back into his half-elf form and will make for the hide out as quickly and as quietly as possible, using the back door near the alderleaf farm. He will cast longstrider under his breath to hasten his dash across town.
"Aye tolben, an ale to wash the dust from our throats would be grand, an' pay no heed t' these lackeys o' Lord Blatherskite, i'll teach 'em t' keep a civil tongue!"
'SERGEANT! mind YOUR manners! You Sir, shall not treat the good people of this town like jackdaw recruits in barracks! Tolben, my good man a glass of your best please, We have harried day and night to get here as quick as possible. I apologise for our late arrival."
After Tolben fills a glass for Titus he turns towards the aforementioned sergeant on the stairs -
'Now sergeant, where is your Lord Beddamere? I shall speak with him immediately.'
If the guard doesn't turn around and start up the stairs and/or fails to salute 'Come on man MOVE! SALUTE YOUR SUPERIOR AND ANNOUNCE MY ARRIVAL YOU CUR!
Kryinor returns to his humanoid form and makes his way quickly and quietly to the companies new home in the former Redbrand hideout.
Upon arriving he finds the lights low and all peaceful and quiet. In a very short time the young man Nars appears and says "Good evening Master Druid and welcome back. Have you heard what happened? There are soldiers in town, protectors...Do you need any food or drink, I am sure there is something ready for a late supper..." his words come out all in a rush. Kryinor can see that he is quite anxious and upset but doing his best to hide it from one of the Heroes of Phandalin.
At the Stonehill Inn...
The Sergeant on the stairs takes a half step backwards and then a look of nervous resolve crosses his face.
"I am the Lords man, not yours 'Captain' , and it is his orders I obey. If you cannot wait a short time for Him to address you then events may move in a direction that everyone here will regret." he says in a level tone.
The sergeant then almost imperceptibly loosens his stance, his hand falling to a relaxed position near his waist, it is an all to familiar stance to Titus' experienced eyes. That of a Veteran readying for a fight.
The tension in the room continues to rise as the other two soldiers read the actions of their superior and stand in subtle readiness for what ever happens next.
In a surreal moment Tolebn re-enters the common room with food and drink, his action serving only to distract not lighten tensions that are building.
Eedim takes a long drink form his mug and burps. Slamming down the drinking vessel he makes a show of unfastening his double-bitted axe and winks at the Soldier standing closest to him. Then in a questioning tone he says "Fighty fight?"
The soldier hands tighten on the haft of his pole-arm and he shifts his weight...
At that moment a fine boot topped by the hem of richly appointed robes firmly lands at the highest step to the floor above.
"Thank you for waiting gentlemen. My apologies for the short delay I was in conference with Lord Neverember, 'Our Leige'." he stressed the last part reminding all in the room that they are subject to laws and will of the Lord of Neverwinter and that he, The Lord Beddamere, is his official, representative.
"Lord Neverember is gravely concerned with the events and 'goings on' in Phandalin and has sent me to find out what exactly is happening and restore order and his rightful authority."
As he speaks he continues to move down the stairs, you all see a middle aged man, immaculately groomed dressed in the finest of robes. He has the confident air of an aristocrat who is accustomed to having his worlds listened to and obey without question. He has a Machiavellian glint of an expert diplomat and politician in his eye and the confident bearing of a man of true power. In his hand he carries a thick book bound in fine tooled leather covered in arcane symbols chained to his wrist with a light shackle made of mysterious blue metal.
"Now, in a civilised manner we shall discuss the events in Phandalin over the last few weeks, and your involvement in them. I will have your report of the journey to Old Owl Well, and Wyvern Tor." He waves a hand at the Sergeant, who dutifully steps aside, then moves to stand before Tutis and bows slightly with raised eyebrow.
Titus returns the lords shallow bow with one his own, A bow not of subservience but that of guarded greeting. As he speaks Titus looks directly at Lord Beddamere with a watchful eye and without any deference implied.
" Well met Lord Beddamere! What marvelous occurrence that Neverwinter again takes interest her people! To expend such interest as to portal in to fair Phandulin speaks highly of your resolve Sir. Has Lord Hallwinter not already provided you with a report? As you know Good Sir, My party has been away at the Tor and Well looking into concerning activities and I will be delighted to provide my report to both of your esteemed personages Hallwinter and Beddamere, A fine repast it should be! For years no Lord has taken his duty for fair Phandulin and now two estimable Lords come to her succor! Wonderful! Wonderful! The People were no doubt rejoicing in the streets on your arrival in such a grand scale! Now if you would do me the honor Good Sir I shall see to the dispositions of my men and join you upstairs directly. But first, (turning to face the sergeant) Sergeant I'll have that salute or by Tempus' Wrath I'll have you outside! No officer of The Wood nor The Gate will have his name besmirched by a Barracks Polisher such as the likes of you!"
Zaxx tries to restrain himself but in the weighty silence following Titus' discourse the wizard takes a very slow, nervous and loud swallow of his ale.
Kryinor smiles at the boy, putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder as he moves in and turns back to scan the forest before closing the door ( Perception : 18 ). He smiles again at the boy " It is good to see you Nars, the food can wait, thankyou. We saw the smoke rising and made all haste back to Phandalin. I do not know what is happening only that there are strange smells and voices throughout the town. The others are investigating the rest of the town as we speak I have come to ensure you are all safe. Where is your sister and mother. I wish to know what has happened and what needs to be done."
The Sergeant's face blanches under Titus' roar. He then looks with nervous inquiry to Lord Beddamere who gives the slightest of nods in return.
A look of blissful relief, tinged with some resentment, passes over his face and he straightens and give a full salute to Titus, "Captain Sir!"
"Now now sergeant, duty is heavier than a mountain. Do not choke on your pride." Says Lord Beddamere whilst observing the soldier.
The sergeant's face whitens again.
Lord Beddamere looks back to Titus, "Captain we shall dine here in the...common room...and its is an uncommonly common room to be sure. I apologise for not receiving you in my apartments, the rooms in the crude place are barely large enough to turn around in let alone entertain." Taking in the rest of the company he continues, "Your men are welcome also to attend as I am sure you will all have important information to impart."
Waving a lazy hand at Tolben, "Please bring forth a fitting meal for Myself and The Heroes of Phandalin, or at least scrabble up the best you can in that thing they call a kitchen in this Gods forsaken place. There's a good man."
Taking a few steps towards a long table, whilst one of the other soldiers pulls out a seat at the head of the table the Lord Beddamere gestures to the remaining seats, "Now, 'Gentlemen', I'm afraid Lord Hallwinter will be unable to attend this meeting but I am sure he would understand if we push on without him...shall we begin the debriefing..."
At the Manor...
Nars swallows heavily, "Bad things Master Kryinor, Mother and I came here to be ready for your return, we knew you would come back. So much has happened. Yesterday, a Dragon they say it was, flew over the town and then came back and circled it for a time. It went of to the North somewhere and has not returned. Then the Townmaster's hall caught fire.
Nars pauses and looks nervously at you, "Master Harbin says it started when Lord Hallwinter and your friend Master Gundren fought in his office and then Master Gundren killed him and set fire to the room. We were all to busy trying to put it out to follow and catch him."
Nars drew in a deep shuddering breath, "Then Nilsa and Carp went off after Master Gundren all on their own, and have not been seen since."
Grabbing the front of Kryinor's clothes he wailed, "Oh Master Druid what are we going to do?"
"Ha, seems my jest was on the mark eh lads! Let these two fine gents bandy words, our road has been long and many battles fought, but much can be put right with a full plate and mug of ale."
"Of course Lord Beddamere, We have returned post haste after observing fair Phandulin on fire from the ruins on the spire of Old Owl Well. We left some days previously to look into reports of a large orc warband last seen at Wywern Tor. This we confirmed and eliminated. Their leader did declare on his death rattle that more are coming, I fear that we encountered a scouting party only, but I do not know more at this point as to where the main host lays or what their intentions are. As for the Well it appears, whatever its secrets are, it has attracted the attention of Red Wizards, well one at least. This rather inept chap was last seen heading east again at a fast rate. It appears your Lordship that Neverwinters' neglect these last years has emboldened many malcontents to consider this ground fair game for their perverted version of sport. I am sure you have questions, but please if you may, where is the good Lord Hallwinter? It is unlike him in my estimation to be absent. What of the fire? I have some young charges in training as well as the town watch how do they fare? Something has happened here, why the subterfuge? We seek the same ends I'm sure eh? The Safety and Protection of this fair town? To restore the good name of Neverwinter in these parts? These good townsfolk have made an impression on this weathered soldier. They are good people, long forgotten but still strong."
Kryinors face darkens momentarily before he kneels down and smiles at Nars " It's okay Nars, we will find your sister and Carp. As for master Hallwinter I would like to see him to pay my respects, do you know where they are keeping his body?"
When Titus mentions the Red Wizard Zaxx immediately rummages through his backpack and triumphantly retrieves the notes taken from the evil necromancers tent.
"My Lord! The good elf Titus speaks all truth! Here! We have retrieved writings from the Red Wizard. Indeed if there is anything that we can do to protect the town in these dire times then you have my staff!"
Lord Beddamere listens to Titus relay the events of the last few days in the foothills of the Sword Mountains and then fixes him with a piercing gaze.
"Lord Neverember heard tales from travelers between Phandlain and the city of a group of adventurers organising the town folk and erecting walls, gates, and towers. We learned that the Order of the Flame were sending a delegation here to study some curious ancient ruins." he paused to let Tolben set some food on the table before you all.
The Lord tentatively poked a bit of rare meat on his plate, sniffed it, then cautiously put it into his mouth and chewed. All at the table could see the great effort it took for him to not show his distaste. "Good man Master Tolben this shall more than suffice."
Tolben bowed awkwardly and backed off to the kitchen, happy to be away from the Lords imposing presence.
"We had been planning an expedition here over the last week or so, far too much going on here for all this..." he waved is hand around taking in all of the surrounding town and country in one imperious gesture, "...to go unnoticed or to be mere coincidence."
The Lord gently placed his cutlery down on the table and looked at each member of the company in turn. Each felt his worth weighed and measured.
"I think I can trust you Captain, indeed I do much prefer to trust you. I see you are all of much use to Neverwinter and killing is such awful bloody work so I shall trust you. But be worthy of my trust mind, for if you betray me, you betray my liege lord, and that will not end well for you."
As he spoke his face was the epitome of gentility and grace, this man would do his duty by his lord efficiently, dispassionately, and thoroughly.
"You ask why Lord Hallwinter is not present, and rightly so, Lord Sildar Hallwinter is Dead. Murdered by your Patron Master Gundren Rockseeker."He then paused scanning all of your faces again.
"I had initially thought you were all in on the caper, Master Rockseeker wanting the Forge of Spells and Phandalin for himself. Then there were reports of walls going up, it all seemed..."He steeped the fingers of both hands in front of his chest, "rather rebellious to the council."
Then a smile lit up his handsome features, "My plan was to have you all rounded up and put to death as rebels, mutineers, heretics, what ever sounded the best you see. It's all about how they see it back in Neverwinter." Then he laughed. It was a limp tittering kind of thing.
"Now that I am here with my men I see a simple frontier settlement besieged with some usual and unusual problems. It's all rather refreshing to deal with simple people and their often simple problems. No wonder you have all been making a name for yourselves here. What a marvelous diversion."
Pinning Zaxx to his seat with another grey eyed stare he continued, "Indeed I would not have arrived for another week had not Master Mage Tallknocker, Talkocher..., you know of whom which I speak young mageling, sent through a man to plead with the Lords Council and the protectors to come at once to the towns aid."
With another limp creature of mirth escaping his lips he said, "There's even talk of a dragon...most amusing."
Hammering both hands palm down on the table Lord Beddamere looked back to Titus, "So Captain can I count on you and your men? Or are you rebels caught in my clever trap?"
Leaning back in his chair as the soldiers around the common room all moved in closer to circle the table, "Com come man, what answer?"
At the Old Manor...
Nars looks up at Kryinor and the young druid can see the boy struggling to hold back tears, "They took him to the Coster. Near our old house. The soldiers have commandeered it for their barracks. I can take you there, but I don't trust them. Mother says they are here to help...but I don't know..." He plucked up a bit of courage, tightening his hands into fists, perhaps from anger. "It's not right, that house is ours, they want to take over here and push us all around."
Kryinor pauses for a moment contemplating everything Nars has said after a small pause he claps his hands together with a determined look on his face "I still cannot believe that Gundren would kill Sildar, thats not the Gundren I know, not at all. I want to know what caused Sildar's death and then we will track down your sister, Carp and Gundren to find out the rest of the story. After that we will tell those rather smelly city soldiers to vacate your household. Until then i need you to do something for me. I need you and your mother to stay here. If the soldiers come do not try to stop then, I do not believe they are here to hurt us but wariness will keep you alive, remember if you see me in my other forms, it is still just me. If your ever unsure call my name, if it is me I will bow my head"
Kryinor will wink at Nars before shaking himself. " I don't want to start a fight with those soldiers and i doubt they will let me just look at sildars body. So lets see if i can still manage this.Nars could you open the door for me once i have shifted."
He gives the boy a moment before shifting into a rat . Kryinor will then shoot out the door and make his way to where Nars told him they were keeping Sildars body. Keeping to the shadows and looking for gaps under doors or windows left open.
Titus slowly rises from his seat in a contrary fashion paying no heed of the soldiers forming a ring. He looks directly at Kargan and Breecha slowly turning to look directly at Lord Beddamere, taking stance with left foot raised and on his erstwhile seat left elbow resting on his left sword hilt, right hand doffing his cap with flourish. To the unobservant a flippant and relaxed posture but to those watching with experience he is a coiled spring ready to unleash at moments notice. "Now now, Lord Beddamere, we are all of a mind here I suggest. No need to place your retainers in harms way eh? We all have fought enough battles to know a squad of toy soldiers when we see them. I fear you will not like your losses if we cross swords. I am sure you know this yes? Let us not get off on the wrong foot. You have the pleasure of knowing with a serene concord in place you can increase your military might by a considerable force factor with us at your side. You of course already know that I have committed to Neverwinter to be the Captain of this fair town. The walls, the militia, the training have all been under my direction in concert with Dear Lord Hallwinter, my his name be sang for ages to come in the taverns of Phandalin. Of course you would know this if you trusted Lord Hallwinter in his missives to Lord Neverember yes? We have much to discuss Lord. I am sworn to serve this town as Captain and unless you are here to relieve me of that duty, I will remain so. If you please let us not descend into petty squabbling here, it is beneath our persons. I wish to see to the continued protection of this town and its people, and in that you are eminently positioned, You are now Lord Protector of Phandalin Lord Beddamere until relieved by Serene Neverwinter herself. But in an effort to allay your fears and let cooler heads prevail I offer you this. Yes I believe there is a dragon at play yours is not the first nor third mention of such a creature and we have seen its effects on trail travelers. In the near future I believe there will be an orc assault on this town. None here are indentured to Gundren, friends? yes. If he did indeed kill Lord Sildar he will answer to us all. You dear Lord will have to enlighten us more on what has happened. Kargan will wish to speak with him. Dwarven pride you see. You surely have him in the town gaol yes? As to the Spell Forge, you would know all about previous Neverwinter efforts in that regard need we discuss Larno? Now if you please Lord Beddamere I would have young Zaxx here record our meeting for posterity, as such a momentous occasion should be recorded. Kargan and Breecha need to attend to business at our residence and make inquiries with the town watch and the younglings. I'm sure they will want to attend the gaol at a time suitable to you to begin questioning Gundren. This forge is naught but fraught will ill intent I fear."
Having completed his monologue Titus looks towards the nearest spearman "now now my man, careful you don't start something that finishes you."
"Zaxx there's a good fellow! paper and nib my friend, paper and nib! such history!"
"Kargan! Breecha! Ajax and Colossus of Phandalin! Perhaps we should check on Mistress Mirna and the dogs?"

Zaxx gestures to his companions while smiling nervously to the guards.
"Now, now, my friends! If we are to meet the Lord of Phandalin we must abide by the town laws. Away put your weapons!"
To the guards he will say, "As for our other companions, they will arrive forthwith (I hope)."

At the Stonehill Inn...
Murdered by your Patron Master Gundren Rockseeker." He then paused scanning all of your faces again.
"I had initially thought you were all in on the caper, Master Rockseeker wanting the Forge of Spells and Phandalin for himself. Then there were reports of walls going up, it all seemed..." He steeped the fingers of both hands in front of his chest, "rather rebellious to the council."
I jump to my feet
"What?!? This cannae be true, Gundren is no murderer! Who accuses him o' this crime? What has passed here? By Moradin I want answers!!"
"Yes. What evidence is there that Gundren is a killer?!" Breccha asks bluntly.
