Tarton, who expected the effects of the tea to be almost as immediate as ale is, finally notices that currently there seems to be no effect on him. He returns to his surroundings just in time to hear Uz give his answer to Artifex, so he decides to engage in conversation with the others. A short halfling wearing a black cloak approaches the talking group. Taking a queue from what The Black Rose said, he stops short so as to not have to breath in the fumes and says, "Mad is not the word I would use to describe these lizardmen, but then again I haven't decided what one word would describe them for myself. Right now I would say 'untrusting' or perhaps 'calculating', but a better word may yet occur to me, so I'm holding off about deciding on my one word description.
As to why we're here, we unknowingly entered their hunting grounds while looking for a place to rest for the night. Hoping to avoid them, we crossed the river and happened upon their... I'm not sure how to describe it... perhaps training area would be best? Anyway, we were ambushed by them and eventually decided that it would be best to stop fighting them as they outnumbered us by quite a lot. After surrendering, they declared that we could not be trusted, so we were brought here to pass their rebirth trial or ritual or what have you before they decide what to do with us. I hope this rebirth thing doesn't turn us in to lizardmen, but I guess there are worse things to be turned into. Though it would be cool if it turned me into a black panther tabaxi or something like that. That could be fun. Then I could change my name too. Yes! If that happens then I will name myself Shadow! Oh, did I say that last part out loud? Sorry, my real name's Tarton."
Tser'ts'tchah grins as he overhears Uz's description of him. "Mad, yes. Like swamp pseudodragon. Great cleverness behind veil of mad mind." As he speaks, you begin to note the first effects of the tea: a simultaneous slight doubling of sounds that makes everything sound like it has a distorted echo, and a strange clarity of perception that allows you to hear things as if they were much closer than they are (current tea effect: +2 Perception, -2 Investigation). For instance, those of you not currently engaged in conversation are beginning to hear a faint sound on the evening breeze like distant music. Whether it is just a hallucination brought on by the tea, or an actual sound you are enabled to hear by the sharpened hearing it has given you ... well, determining that will take one each of the aforementioned rolls with bonus / penalty applied. DC13. On the good side, if it is a real sound that will also let you catch enough to make a guess at what the sound is.
"In all fairness, you were here first." Artifex says, It's gaze shifting to Tser'ts'tchah. "I just saw something shiney and wandered in. That beast's skull in particular, when we first entered your territory I beleive, had a rather eye catching grin."
Because he is doing most of the talking, and being embarrassed about talking out loud about changing his name, Tarton does not notice the music and instead is focusing on how his voice seems to be echoing.
The Black Rose engaged in the conversation, not noticing the music but definitely feeling the effects of the tea. The impact on his hearing caused him to lose focus slightly, as hearing was his most relied-upon sense. As Tarton began speaking, The Black Rose simply listened and chuckled a little at the content.
However, curious about the tea's effects, he decided to inquire with Tser'ts'tchah. "I hope it is not rude, but I must ask: is this tea truly enhancing our hearing, or is it a hallucination giving us the illusion of this enhancement? If it is indeed an enhancement, I must add it to my recipe collection. I detected mugwort and crabapple, betony and peppermint, hawthorn, rowan, hazel, Yarrow and of course babbleflower, but I wonder if that is all. I spoke to Gwrgi about this earlier, but I wanted to hear it from you, if you're willing to share, of course. We can also discuss this later, if we pass this test, of course."
The lizardfolk shaman raises one eyebrow. "Interesting. You remind me of river gnome wanderer I know once. Always curious. Will be time later if you pass to talk more, but for now know that with this blend, there some of ... of both. Hallucination, and clarity. Sometimes one, sometimes both. Remember, when you search mud for food. Egg is ... is most primitive stage. Like grub. First test is to prove you can provide for self in spirit world. Search pit and bring me three things eatable. However can ... the wind blows a ... " He seems to turn inward a moment, or pause to listen ... you're not sure. Then he turns his eyes on you all again. "Three foods each."After which you can get nothing more than an impassive nod and gaze at your empty hands as he stands listening to the wind.
The pit is roughly horseshoe-shaped, a long more or less oval sinkhole with a projecting peninsula of crumbling foundation, ruined stonework, mud and clay sticking out in the north center to turn it into a great U-shaped space that takes up at least a quarter of an acre ... possibly more. The sides are not as sheer as they seemed, and could possibly be climbed in or out. You doubt, however, that this would be considered a success in Tser'ts'tchah 's test. And so far, though the breeze is steadily growing more musical, no one is yet sure which side of the doors of reality the music is coming from.
From where you stand, you can see a number of jumbled and broken stone blocks scattered about the pit; lots of mud; a few sickly reeds and grasses, and an increasing quantity of patches of mist as the day wears on towards its end.
The Black Rose nodded at Tser'ts'tchah's response, then went down on his knee and began searching the pit. He meticulously sifted through the debris, searching for flora and fauna and attempting to identify anything edible he found.
Artifex gazes around the pit for a moment, as though pondering something. After a few minutes, They turn back to Tser'ts'tchah. "So just to be clear. The parameters of this test are that we have to bring you three things, that can be eaten, that are in this pit right now? Those are the only rules?"
It thinks a moment longer. "And edible by what standard? I know of dwarven dishes spiced with nightshade that would kill a human, and wine of the Eternal Twilight that would drive many aethen mad, should it ever pass their lips."
Tarton was just noticing the music after listening to The Black Rose and Tser'ts'tchah talk and was about to start looking for food items when he heard Artifex's question. He pauses a moment to hear the answer as well but then decides he can probably find three items he would eat and walks towards the reeds to look for a nest and possibly edible plants.
Tser'ts'tchah chuckles briefly, finally drawn out of his shell by Artifex' wit. "Not seeing dwarves or aethen here. Edible by present company ... but must be edible by all, not just one."
=========
:-) The game is afoot! For each item, tell me (as Tarton and The Black Rose have already done for the first) how you're going about searching, and I'll give you the rolls you need to make. Any ones you miss, you can either try the same food gathering strategy again (with cumulatively diminishing chances for each accrued failure) or try something different.
In this case, both Tarton and TBR need either Investigation or Survival to find something that might possibly be eaten, and Nature or a second Survival check to identify what it is. In Tarton's case, he can see to move to a (slightly) more vegetated spot and is trained in Survival, so both are DC 12 for him. The Black Rose is starting where he stands in a more muddy and stony place (DC 14 on the first roll), but his training in Medicine also covers poisonous vs. edible plants and is thus a "transferable skill" ... not close enough to actually roll a Medicine check, but brings down the DC on the second to the same as Tarton's (12).
And of course, if you make the first roll to find something but blow the second, you can always present it to Tser'ts'tchah anyway with a brave smile and both fingers crossed behind your backs LOL)

While listening to the music as he walks over to a slightly greener spot of plant life, the music seems to fill his mind and body. Something in him is fighting against the influence of the music and tea enough that it distracts him so that he doesn't find anything in this particular area.

The Black Rose, not finding anything initially, changed tactics. Drawing on his observations from the first attempt, he began using his staff to dig into the ground, searching for worms, insects, and especially any type of grub. If he didn't find anything in the soil, he shifted his focus to finding vegetation. As he searched for both small invertebrates and plants, he pondered the season and what types of vegetation and animals could be found in a swamp. Of course, he continued to try to identify anything he found as edible or not.

Rather than begining to search, as the others do, Artifex simply sits in a comfortable position and closes their eyes, humming along with the music they still aren't sure is real. "If possible I'd like to present my findings last." They say, less of a question and more of an invitation for the others to proceed as they will.
No search rolls for me. I have something in mind. It's a bit of a smartass thing, but Artifex tends to be too clever for their own good anyway, so it seems fitting

So Zladark, I'm pretty open to whether someone wants to split up their rolls to find something and to ID it, or not. Procedure is this: for each round, you describe your method (how you search, or if you want to try other methods like hunting for birds that might be flying over, or whatever Artifex has in mind). I'll generally give two rolls, though not always the same ones ... hunting, for instance, would be Survival to spot the birds and a missile weapon attack to bring one down. But in general, once you post a succesful first roll I'll give you general categories of what you're looking at ... in your case, you've found a small plant of some sort growing out of a crevice in one of the fallen stones. Your successful second roll wiltell you what it is; and then you can either report back to Tser'ts'tchah if you have your three or post how you go about finding the next one.)

The Black Rose observed a small plant growing out of a crevice in one of the fallen stones. Carefully, he pulled it out, feeling the texture of the roots and leaves, smelling the plant, and gently rubbing its different parts to see if it emitted any distinct odor that could help identify the plant. After this he continued his search. This time, he focused on finding insects, worms, or grubs of different types in the soil, digging them up with his staff.

Oh, I thought that I failed that first roll. In that case, here you have the roll to identify the small plant of some sort growing out of a crevice.
Nature: 12
What should I roll for my second round of searching if I'm looking for insects, worms, and grubs of different kinds by digging up the ground? And is it still a Nature or Survival check to see if it is edible?
As The Black Rose tried to identify the plant and searched for grubs, he realized that not everyone was searching. He looked up from the dirt, addressing the group, "Why are you all not searching? You cannot pass a test without trying, or am I wrong here?"

"What about you?" The Black Rose turned to Uz, as if he could see him with his milky white eyes. "Your name is Uz, right? Do you have a plan as well?"
Uz will laugh a little more to himself as he shakes his head.
