Gwrgi looks out uncertainly towards the approaching pair. "Tser'ts'tchah did mutter something earlier, when he was reading Mr. Leewamba's letter, about one more who hadn't come. But not two. Do nothing rash, but we certainly should be on our guard." Turning to The Black Rose, she adds, "A human man and a dwarf woman are coming from the south. Openly enough, I must say, but with the sun at their backs."

"Then let’s hear them out," The Black Rose repsonded. As the boat drew closer, he raised his voice "Who are you, and why are you here?" he called out, still holding his defensive monk stance.
“ Greetings fellow adventurers our employer (Mr x for now) sends his greetings . He sends this letter as a way of introducing us and suggests that I give it to Zladark the monk which looks to be you good sir.
i am zenzor- war mage.
please remember if we had wanted to attack we wouldn’t have made so much noise- however I’d suggest that you also validate we’re not part of an ambush and are in fact alone. We can wait here near the waters edge until your ready to read the letter.”
The Black Rose looked perplexed, his brow furrowing in confusion. "How did you…? How did you know my old name? I haven't been called that in a long time. Nowadays, I go by the name The Black Rose." He shook his head slightly, his thoughts racing. "I hope that letter is made for someone with my condition if it truly was intended for me."
With cautious curiosity, he walked over to take the letter. He ran his hands over it, trying to discern whether it was readable by someone without sight like himself, feeling for any familiar textures, indentations, or braille that might convey the message.
-----------------------------------
I actually like the idea that The Black Rose's true name is Zladark. So if the DM allows it, I would like that to be the case.
Tarton is instantly on his guard and suspicious of these newcomers who know The Black Rose's actual name. He was content just watching from the side, but now... As the attention is on The Black Rose, Tarton steps behind one of the lizardfolk as if going to walk closer, but doesn't appear on the other side as he moves into the bushes behind them both and hides while he listens to what happens.

"Well isn't this just a regular orgy of misfits. At least there'll be no shortage of company" Artifex says, seeming somewhat absentminded, barley glancing at the newcomers.
Artifex is still thinking about that behir skull. Do they have any sense of where it is relative to the group at this point, or would it just be too far for them to think about slipping away to grab a few teeth?
" 'Shortage' of company, huh? You meaning that as a slur, tall stuff?," the dwarf woman growls. "Or just a little careless with words? I can hold my own in the line of battle beside any two misfits of ye." She grins a moment later, taking a little of the edge off her words. "If you don't mind traveling with a woman who speaks her mind first and thinks things through after."

It's pretty far; this village is at the center of the lizardfolk territory, and the skull marked the southern boundary

Artifex grins, turning to the dwarf. "Wasn't paying attention I'm afraid. Although if insult were intended, I'm quite certain I could get *far* more creative than a dig at your height. Why that'd just be low-hanging fruit." They think for a moment, chuckling slightly at its second unintentional pun. "As for speaking your mind, I not only don't mind, but insist. Choking back ones truth is quite tasteless, and besides, I find such social pleasantries unbearably boring."
(apologies for the gap in posts. Have been dealing with a family illness IRL, better now for the moment but its one of those situations where you just need to take it day by day. )
The Black Rose (or 'the artist formerly known as Zladark', if you prefer ;) finds that Mr. Leewamba has indeed remembered to write to him in a form that he can read. For the florid river gnome it is a missive remarkably short and to the point:
"I have recently learned of strange doings in the marsh country through which you will need to pass. Uncertain whether these are related to the item which I have sent you to find, but some additional assistance may not be amiss. I have hired the bearer and his companion to accompany you, under the same terms of employment.
Yours in haste, Zanexi"

As The Black Rose finished reading the letter, he looked up with a thoughtful expression. "It seems our patron has decided to add two more members to our little group," he announced, "He’s also aware of the strange happenings in the marsh. However, he’s uncertain if these events are related to our mission."
He folded the letter carefully, his brow furrowing slightly. "I am still curious about how he learned my true name. I know he has connections, but still…" His voice trailed off, as he pondered this unexpected revelation.

I wish your family a full recovery. It hits hard when someone you care about gets sick. I hope you're doing okay yourself.

D&D Beyond needs to fix the notifications, I was looking at it every couple of days and it only showed me the post from 8/22. Decided today to just click on it to see if it wasn't working, and sure enough, there were 2 posts it wasn't showing me.
(Yup, notifications have been nerfed for about three weeks now. All the games I'm a player in have the same problem, but luckily my "Threads" tab seems to have the up to date information)
Kalkass'ssa'th still looks a bit dubiously at the newcomers at first, but after a short inspection he nods in cautious approval. "Leewamba is friend of our tribe. If he says they can help, good." With that, he dives into the river and beckons you to board your boats and follow him as he swims upstream. You find it takes a good stiff effort to keep up with the powerfully swimming lizardfolk, but he slows to let you catch up whenever you fall behind.
After about four hours of paddling through the slower currents and eddies by the west bank, Kalkass'ssa'th climbs up onto the bank near some old cypress trees and signals you to tie up to their projecting roots. You have reached an area of the river where tall marsh grasses blend with scrub trees spilling down from the more forested mountains of Ulvsnesshjolm to your west. (Picture not to scale, Wikipedia being a little short on actual Sauvogia images LOL. The river you're on is a good deal wider than this ... )
Beside the trees where you tied up, a carved pole surmounted by an ogre's skull marks the northern bounds of the lizardfolk lands. You don't see any footprints currently around the base, two months of weather having obliterated any traces of the ones Tser'ts'tchah's patrol found; but there is a faint path leading away from the riverbank about a hundred feet and then bending north; and if you stop to listen, you can just make out the echoes of a faraway croaking that sounds like it is coming from that direction.

Tarton quickly ties the boat he rode in to the roots as told and moves ashore. When everyone is on land, Tarton says, "Well, it sounds like we won't have to look too far to find these frog people. If that's them making that noise that is. Should I scout a little ahead of the group looking for traps and listening for - anything? For those tall enough to see over this grass, I ask you to keep a lookout for things off the path and farther away that I can't see."
He waits for a reply or other suggestions before heading down the path.
Zladark, also known as The Black Rose, nodded in agreement with Tarton. "Sounds like a good plan," he replied, his tone measured. However, he then pointed to his milky white eyes and added, "But I'm afraid I cannot assist in keeping a lookout."
He paused for a moment, contemplating his next words. "However," he continued, "I may not be as stealthy as you, but I could accompany you in case you get into trouble."
Tarton replies, "My plan is to stay 30 to 40 feet in front of the group looking for traps, but I would welcome your company." To the rest of the group Tarton asks, "Does anyone else have suggestions or input they would like to share before The Black Rose and I start?"
Are you still allowing new members? If so I would like to play with somethings you might want to know. I can post weekly but at possibly random or at least infrequent times. Also is it possible to build a character using physical book content such as PHB 2014, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, and Sword Coast Explorer’s Guide? Oh and Dungeon Masters Guide 2014?
Artifex glances idly at the troll skull "oh yay, more bones!" Their focus shifts to the path. "Well at least we know they aren't too worried about being secretive... Does anyone know how intelligent these frog creatures are? They may not be the talkative sort even if they're capable of speaking, but it's best to consider all the possibilities. Besides, I'd rather not walk into another trap, if I can avoid it. Better to set the terms of engagement ourselves rather than play another's game"
