Erolith painfully removes the crossbow bolt that grazed him from the final crossbow bolt. He grimaces momentarily as he tosses the used bolt onto the lifeless kobold.
”Exciting way to start the day. I’m afraid our excitement may not be at its end. I detect stirred voices coming from beyond this wall.” Erolith points towards a wall opposite from the alleyway entrance.
”I am not sure the raised commotion is for us, but I find it highly likely that it is. It may be in our best interest to quickly search these foul creatures for clues and then regroup elsewhere.”
Erolith starts to search the fallen foes starting with the furry beast that started the chase.
"if you're capable of healing it would be much appreciated. Fortunately our opponents seemed uninterested in targeting me, I'm unsure my body would be able to withstand another hit like that."
Artifex nods in agreement with Erolith, begining to search the nearest body. "Indeed. Though we were justified in our defense, it will generally not do to be found surrounded by corpses."
"It's a form of healing, more of a treatment than magic, really. It's a little invention of mine," The Black Rose explained. He carefully extracted a small syringe from his pouch, the liquid inside resembling the color of rose petals.
He walked over to Artifex, a sympathetic look in his eyes. "This might sting for just a second," he warned before deftly injecting the contents of the syringe into Artifex's side.
Without waiting for a reaction, he moved over to one of the kobold corpses and began searching for clues. "By the way, did you mention a type of ammunition called a bullet? I've read about those but never seen one before," he inquired. "You said the locals believe it to be magic?"
Tarton stops to listen for what he can hear from the commotion Erolith mentioned. He then employs his quick fingers to searching the kobold bodies for loot, weapons, and clues. "Well, this is surprisingly not as fun when they're dead. There's no thrill or excitement when there's no possibility of being caught." Tarton says a bit regretfully. "Though there was plenty of excitement during the chase and fight. Oh, I do want one of their hand crossbows and will split the bolts with anyone else that wants them."

"I'd be more than happy to take two to replace the ones I used. Other than that, I assume we're going to split any coin evenly. And I would quite like to hold on to anything particularly unique or interesting if we find it."
Artifex turns to The Black Rose. "I've run into such weapons a number of times, though I admit this particular realm had quite a frightful abundance of them. And yes, the general public believed that was the only possibility, as the wounds on this leaders body didn't make sense. It made it seem as though the bullet had curved several times in mid-air. While I've certainly known a few ways the metal could be manipulated in such a way through magic, this was not the case. What had actually happened was a conspiracy between a criminal organization and the leaders own spy agency. The shots were simultaneous, in order to sound like a single shot, but there were no fewer than three assassins taking aim. I was in a.... how to put this. A position of unique closeness to the leadership of the criminal element at the time, so while I don't know many details, I was able to gather the truth." Artifex blushes slightly upon mentioning their unique relationship with said criminal, but continues. "It's not a realm I would prefer to visit again. Violence can be entertaining, but not in a situation where it's so common as to become redundant."
The Black Rose looked up from the kobold he was searching, his eyes filled with curiosity. "Interesting. Raw intelligence can sometimes be more valuable than even the spells of the most powerful magic users," he mused before returning his attention to the body.
"Maybe one or more of them are still alive, just not conscious. We should check that before we leave them here," The Black Rose suggested. He carefully tried to find a pulse on the kobold he was searching and listened intently for any signs of breathing, his fingers placed gently on the creature's neck as he examined it in detail.
The kobold that The Black Rose is checking proves to be thoroughly dead, as do the remainder of your opponents. You are now all able to hear a low mutter of anxious voices from the shadows to the left; from what you can piece together, one or more people are trying to figure out reasons they don't really need to check out what's going on in the courtyard where you are. You think at least one is maintaining it's not their responsibility anyway.
So far, all you hear from the other direction (the way you came) are the ordinary waking noises of a marketplace district in the middle early morning.
On the bodies of the furry creature and the two kobolds who fell in the courtyard, you find necklaces made of braided leather thongs; a red stone carving identical to the one the third kobold threw down is suspended from each. In addition, you find thirty silver coins of an unfamiliar type; nine gold coins; two hand crossbows; two cases with twenty bolts each; three daggers; and a curiously light-feeling small linen pouch the furry fellow had at its belt. This is dyed in an intricate swirling pattern of purple and green; and held closed by a string that is as flexible as any other string but otherwise looks as if it were made of pure silver.
Erolith retrieves the purple and green pouch from the furry creature he was searching with intentions to ask the party about it once they are clear of the ambush scene.
”We should be on our way quickly. I don’t think it would benefit us to linger here any longer.”
(Fine by me. I assume you gather up everything and head out to where you left the main street? If so, you can pick up another bolt case and 20 copper coins from the third kobold, but its crossbow was under it when it fell and has been crushed beyond easy repair. Looking up and down the street you see no immediate signs of alarm, so you can decide whether to continue your descent toward the market district or retrace your steps uphill towards some other destination.
And if my assumption as to what you do on leaving is wrong, please do post that too OC 8-) )

"Barring a quick stop at the blacksmith's to see what we can get from the extra crossbows, I feel it would be prudent for us to leave town quickly. Delaying will only give whoever hired our would be assassins time to regroup."
As Artifex looks at one of the crossbows considering whether to sell it or not, they notice a small plate of brass set into the butt of the weapon. It is so tarnished that it was indistinguishable from the wood until they turned the crossbow just right in the light. Engraved on the plate in exceedingly archaic elven runes are six words. The runes are so old they might even date back before the schism that separated the drow from the rest of elvenkind, but the plate itself has very few scratches for all its tarnish and was probably patinated by the horrible conditions of being kept wherever this kobold denned when it wasn't ambushing innocent adventurers. Peering and scraping off various organix substances that are probably better left unidentified, Artifex finally manages to make out most of the letters spelling out words, "Th. Court .f the Cr.ms.n King"
"I agree, leaving quickly would be best. But I think it better to not stop at all and sell it in the next town at least." Tarton suggests. Then he hears Artifex seeming to talk to itself while looking at the crossbow and says, "Did you find something interesting?" while they walk to the main market street. Tarton is staying to the shadows to try and stay hidden. He'll also try to keep a lookout for others that are dressed similarly to those that attacked them.
-------------------------------------------------- How do you handle stealth checks while moving normal speed, stealth at disadvantage, or does the DC just go up? I'll roll with disadvantage and if you want to just increase the DC I'll list the roles in order so you can take the first one. 16 and 24, so 16 would be the roll either way.
As the group leaves the confines of the alley maze and returns to the main streets,Tarton slips into the shadows at the sides of the street while the rest walk in the main road. This street has no defined pedestrian walkways, but a rough order is beginning to make itself apparent as the morning traffic increases. The road is wide enough for wagons and carts to keep the middle and leave the sides of the street to walkers; and they move slowly enough for folk to weave in and out among them with little risk. Also, as you face downhill you notice that most traffic on your side (the left) is heading that way, while many of the vehicles and walkers on the right are bound uphill whence you came.
Neither Tarton in the shadows nor any of the rest of you in the main road see any kobolds. There are a few individuals scattered throughout the crowd who wear a costume that includes a loose vest and hood, similar to the clothes your first attacker wore. However, now that Artifex has had some time to mull things over, they remember that this is a common style of clothing among Witchlight hands; and you don't notice any similarity of color or any patterns dyed into the garments other than that.
==============
(OOC: Artifex can roll History, sure. And I'd say the only time moving at normal speed would impose Stealth disadvantage was if someone was actively trying to spot you; otherwise its just a higher DC)
"Hm?" Artifex looks up from the crossbow, as though startled from deep thought. "Oh, nothing in particular. Just debating how best to trick whoever buys this from me into giving me more than it's worth. I try to come out on the better end of any deals I happen to make."
Badfishing feel free to make an insight check if you like. Also Artifex uses they/it pronouns. Not a big deal but it matters to the character, as using the proper labels when addressing or identifying someone is quite important when it comes to fae creatures. (In my mind at least)
While walking Erolith removes the purple and green pouch that he retrieved of the furry assailant to study it. “What do you make of this item,” he asks the group.
The Black Rose walked closer to Artifex and gently reached out to feel the fabric of the Pouch. He then brought his fingers back to his nose, sniffing delicately to see if any scent had transferred from the fabric to his fingers.
"Have you looked inside?" he asked Artifex, his curiosity piqued.

"But why would someone employed by that kind of establishment try to stop us?" The Black Rose pondered aloud, his brow furrowing in thought.
He then added, "Is anyone hurt badly? I have something that might make you feel better. If not, I'll save it for our future struggles."
Erolith painfully removes the crossbow bolt that grazed him from the final crossbow bolt. He grimaces momentarily as he tosses the used bolt onto the lifeless kobold.
