Tryn studies the invention in the middle of the room and wonders if it would be possible to scavenge the heavy crossbows. They nearly killed his companion and, hell, that shot could have killed him outright. It would only be fair if they can get something back in return.

Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.
Upon inspection you realize that the crossbows were slightly altered to function well with the levers and pulleys and the whole integrated system. Meaning that to take it of would take some time with the tools the gnome has on him and around but also it would be impossible to use for a person. For example a blocking piece for bowstring is missing, as the bowstring is held by a part integrated with whole mechanism to be able to retract it further. The stock would be basically missing after detaching the crossbow from machin. Things like that shows that it would be a fruitless effort to take it out.

Goraseth tries to patch up his large wound "Well, that was a close one... I hate to ask this but do you think I could use your potion Tryn ? Who knows what awaits behind the next door...". He would also look around to see if there any first aid kit...
“We all earned the potion, here it is, “Tryn passes the potion of healing to Seth.

« Thank you. I think it might be wise for me not to continue with such a wound ». Goraseth drinks in one go the content of the vial. A warm feeling instantly travels to his open abdomen, closing most of the wound. « There i feel a bit better. Let continue but with a bit more care maybe » he smiles.
Tharanau walks up to the unconscious gnome and pours some water into his face. If he wakes up, he'll ask him:
"I am sorry, Mr. gnome, I have tied you up as a precaution. Within seconds you almost eliminated one of our group. Your inventions seem extraordinary. We're searching for a weapon or a device to repel - or possibly kill - a dragon that seems to have moved into the area. The good people of Phandalin are very worried about its impact on the area. Could you point us into the direction of who we can speak to?"
Female gnome that you have now tied up, wakes up from water pour and upon being asked a question starts to mumble something first seemingly angry and then the tone seems more sad. Nevertheless what ever is coming out of her mouth is incomprehensible.

“Great. They’ve just let the crazy one sit at the door and play with their new toy. A word of warning would have been appreciated.” Tryn starts to explore where they might continue further down the mad gnomes’ lair. “Perhaps, we can solve the dragon problem by tricking the dragon to search these caverns for an ancient magic trinket…”

For investigation check you see some rubble and scraps laying around walls of this room not much of a use for anyone who is not building some machines, some rope, some cogs and what not. You check out the machine and figured out where are the bolts being pulled from finding a magazine for each crossbow. There are 78 crossbow bolts altogether in those little crates affixed to the whole machine and reloading system. You can easly take the bolts without breaking the reloading system if you wish to do so.
Scouting about you see 2 paths. Eastern path leads to a room with ,at least what you can see for now, Barrels. South path leads to a room where on the ledge you can see two gnome figures standing.
The gnomes would see you right away if you enter their chamber, but you might sneak up to the eastern chamber with a successful sneak roll if you wish.

Goraseth whispers to the other "I would be keen to salute them but keeping our distance for safety. I mean they cannot be all mad, no ?". He then points towards the barrels: "Or we check what's in this room before ?"
Tryn, after peeking to the guards, explores the cave exit of this room and tries to figure out if they could jump or climb to the next, adjacent platform. “You think we could build an impromptu grapple hook with a rope and some stuff that lays around here? Perhaps we can get to the bridge from here. But then, I really don’t want to break in. If all these gnomes are one short of their pocket watch twelve, we might not get what we need from them anyway… I’d say we try to talk again and hope for more luck.”

As you are peeking trough the corner you see movement and chatter between gnomes and someone else in the back. Taller than gnomes. It is hard to hear from that point due to loud waterfall that is echoing pretty loudly in the whole cavern system.

Tryn consults with the party in a hushed tone, “Someone is there with the gnomes. Perhaps they are the reason why they attack us? Maybe we should consider to explore and get some intel before we accidentally kill a gnome or get killed by one.”

"Very well, let's check this room other there with the barrels then we can go check the door that was North of here before continuing towards the gnomes.". Goraseth continues silently towards the barrels, keeping an eye out for crazy gnomes on giant crossbow.
This room contains twelve forty-gallon barrels set into wide alcoves. Each barrel is secured by a wooden brace. The barrels in the south alcove have been tapped with wooden spigots.
Also Goraseth please roll for stealth to see if you were unnoticed by gnomes in the south.

The room is safe and rather barren, looks like a test room for such inventions like the rotating multi heavy crossbow device you encountered.
