"I climbed the plateau, just above that group of trees." Gneuman gestures over his shoulder. "There are four make-shift tents to left. Three small and one larger. I would assume the larger is the hobgoblin tent." "To the right, a bit further down in the valley, there are several other tents around a fire circle." The monk make a shooing gesture with his hand, "Deeper into the canyon, there are three larger tents. Two have a fire basket in front, providing a bit of light. It illuminates the canyon a bit." "There are two human guards there in front of the tents." "The guards are remaining in place." "Also, there are ballistas among the tents." "There is also a well, and a stack of supplies." "I did not get eyes on the entire encampment, as I dare not be discovered, but I could risk another look, if you wish."
There is a ballista between the group of tents below you and the three tents in the back. The guards are staying in place.
Now hobgoblins are dodging light, what kind world is this?!?
Couldn't remember what kind of save it was, that's why I mentioned near to avoid the save as an option. But would be a lot more amusing having it cast on it.
to the group. “Ok, if we have access on the north to the escarpment, as Gneuman has scouted. We could take out the watch tower on top with sleep spell. Once neutralized, we can send one up to quietly dispatch that group. I know I am adding Fuel to Chadwick’s fire, however we could create 2 diversions. Chadwick can drop flaming oil on the larger tent on the west side of the canyon. I can use Thaumaturgy and create another diversion by causing smalls tremors, great loud thunder, throw my voice and potentially spook the horses and create sounds like there is a frontal assault. With those diversions going, a small party could reverse down the escarpment to Cleggor and the gnome, get them out and back up and out to the North.” “Those on the escarpment could provide covering fire if the breakout team encounters resistance.” “Let’s firm this quick and finalize the plan before we lose the cover of dark” looking at the members of the party, eager to hear additions, adjustments or disagreement.
Why announce our presence? What is the benefit of that over sleeping the tower and going down the ramp without setting everything on fire and waking up 30 soldiers?

I am good with stealth, let’s just have a backup diversionary tactic to allow us a chance to get out if detected. I can use Thaumaturgy or we can choose another method.
Sleep the tower at the mouth of the canyon first using the plan set forth. Move to overlook the prisoners. Take intel. Move to sleep the second tower. Get the prisoners out using horses if need be, or sneak back out the way we came—whatever the situation dictates.
If at any time things go pear shaped, we can retreat back out the way we came.
After taking out the first tower, we could oil the mouth of the canyon. Light it on our way out to block pursuit, although I am skeptical that we will be able to set the fire on the run.
I put the party in an approximate location. The goal is to be just at the edge of dark vision range, which is close to the edge of the map (I think). The front line of the group is supposed to be at the edge of dark vision range, with those that have ranged attacks and dark vision at the front, except Erbert. When he is ready to cast, everyone that can see prep a ranged attack, Erbert steps forward, casts sleep, and the plan goes to hell.
((Can’t see the owlbear map again, can someone send the link again? ((He asks, feeling lame.))))
Erbert gives a thumbs up sign when everyone is in place, uses the range of the spell, casting sleep from a 60-90 foot distance, putting 21 hit points of monsters to sleep in a 20 foot radius, letting attack team delta sweep in to mop up. He gives a thumbs up sign to Bronk, then looks at the other tower, waiting for the signal.

Gneuman returns...

Gneuman has returned with information. The map is updated with what he found. It is now early morning hours. Dawn is 2-3 hours away.
Plans?
Now hobgoblins are dodging light, what kind world is this?!?
Couldn't remember what kind of save it was, that's why I mentioned near to avoid the save as an option. But would be a lot more amusing having it cast on it.
That would be funny.
Do we have any information on the goblins at the towers?
I couldn't see anything in the towers, unfortunately.
Is it safe to assume that if any goblins are present, they are in the towers, not on the ground nearby?

I like the thought of waking 30 soldiers……

There also appear to be conveniently located escape horses.
No one wants to wake 30 bandits, except for Chadwick, however I am not fond of our odds to not wake them. I guess we will see!
“Hoid, lay out your details. Who does what?”

A Fire Bolt will ignite a line of oil.

(( Yes. There is a slope up to the plateau top where the blue is. ))
