(OOC: Are we talking about a slit wide enough to be used as an arrow slit? Or just a peephole that they use to spy on this meeting room? And what are the dimensions of the meeting room? I'm just trying to figure out how long it'll take us to get to the door in the west in case something attacks from the south.)
Xanrym follows the others into the room. He waits at the open door to the skeleton room with his crossbow, guarding their rear. He keeps an eye and an ear on the door to the stairs that lead up from the first floor. He wonders where Joclyn went and hopes that she's not planning to lead a bunch of cultists upstairs to surround the party!
Is Theldrin still maintaining concentration on detect magic? I think that it lasts for 1 hour from when he cast it as a ritual, right? Any of the books magical?
OOC: Unless I'm missing something I think it only lasts 10 minutes... could cast it again if we want to take the time.

(OOC: Oops. Yeah, I was confusing the duration with Xanrym's comprehend languages, which he's been casting every time we take a rest since we arrived at the temple. The duration is 1 hour and doesn't even require concentration, so he should still have it running at the moment. In case we hit any more troglodtyes or ettins or something, he wants to be able to understand what they're saying, even if it's as simple as "Ettin Smash!")
The slit is small. The room is fairly large, as are most on this temple. 30ft by 20ft.
(OOC: Perfect, thanks! I assume that Avery will share what saw, but now that Xanrym is at the back of the line as rear guard, I'll wait until Avery and Liarin decide how they want to proceed before Xanrym takes any other action.)
As you look around the room, you notice a little slit in the wall to the south. When you walk up to it, you see a small yellow eye looking back at you for a moment. It quickly disappears from view, and you hear shuffling and murmuring coming from behind that wall.
Avery passes, "Be on your guard, we have been spotted! I don't hear an alarm, but someone or something saw us and shuffled off!"
You don't hear anything coming through the door to your west. But to the south, where the slit is, you hear scrambling, and the sound of things talking in a language you don't understand.
You put your head up against the wall again. You don't see anything but you do hear the distinct sound of something counting in goblinoid, "1...2..." It says.
Avery passes, "Be on your guard, we have been spotted! I don't hear an alarm, but someone or something saw us and shuffled off!"
"Liarin, guard that other door", Xanrym recommends, pointing at the door to the west, "in case they come from that direction."
Xanrym asks Avery, "Hurry through to the next room? Or do you want to fall back to the skeleton room to see whether we can bottle them up in here?"
As stated above, it has been less than 1 hour since the end of their last short rest, so Xanrym still has comprehend languages running. If Avery wants, Xanrym can come listen at wall to the south. If not, he raises his crossbow and aims at the only door, ready to fire at any goblins who come through it.
In case his readied action triggers before he takes some other action:
The door isn’t locked, and on the other side looks to be a grizzly torture chamber. However, that’s not the most surprising thing about this room, because as you open the door, a secret door open from the wall just in front of you to the south. Two goblins spew forth, at the same time two goblins push out of a secret door where you saw the slit in the wall in your room.
”Blood for the queen! She is the Darkness.” They all wield blades and are coming for blood. I’ll roll initiative for y’all:
Group 1: Avery.
Group 2: Goblins.
Group 3: Liarin, Theldrin, Xanrym.
Avery is up, two goblins have just burst into the room with you and Xanrym, while Theldrin and Liarin scream as they encounter goblins in the other room.
(OOC: Nice! Since goblins are pretty squishy, you may want to add a conditional bonus action to your turn in this fight using Avery's GWM feat:
On your turn, when you score a critical hit with a melee weapon or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with one, you can make one melee weapon attack as a bonus action.
That is: Attack / Damage and if that reduced the target to 0 HP, then he'll attack the other goblin as a bonus action: second Attack / Damage.)

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Avery lashes around with his sword, felling one goblin and giving another one a reason to step back. That goblin slashes back at Avery while the two in the other room rush Theldrin:
Scimitar against Avery Attack: 11 Damage: 6 Slashing
Scimitar against Theldrin Attack: 24 Damage: 8 Slashing
Shortbow against Theldrin Attack: 19 Damage: 6 Piercing
Theldrin, Xandrym, and Liarin are up, One goblin remains in the meeting room, while two others are attacking Theldrin in the hallway to the torture chamber.
An invisible barrier of magical force blocks the scimitar attack and temporarily boosts Theldrin's defences (casts Shield) as he gives a startled cry. He then quickly moves away through the open door (uses Disengage action).
He then quickly moves away through the open door (uses Disengage action).
(OOC: @werelemur, Theldrin moved back through the door to the skeleton room?)
Xanrym sees the goblins burst into the room through some sort of secret door, but he trusts Avery to handle them. After Theldrin's spell deflects the attacks from the goblins in the hall to the torture chamber, Theldrin finally moves out of the way, and Xanrym fires his crossbow at the closest one. He asks anxiously, "Liarin, can you keep them out of this room?"

Avery passes, "Be on your guard, we have been spotted! I don't hear an alarm, but someone or something saw us and shuffled off!"
Theldrin looks curiously at the bottle of wine, then walks over and kneels by the simple wooden.door leading to the west putting his ear up to it.
Perception: 14
Liarin remains in dire wolf form, hampering her ability to coordinate with the party, but remains vigilant.
