Xanrym eats his meal in silence, absorbed in some story from his book. When he finally looks up, he's surprised to find Lldryk missing. "Oh!", he says, "Has Lldryk already gone up to bed? Do we have a plan for tomorrow?" Once someone fills him in on the plan to meet early in the morning, he gets up to find Bertram and ask about his room.
If Xanrym can find Bertram, he compliments the innkeeper on the establishment and the dinner. Then he asks, "Bertram, you seem to know the town. Who would you say has the deepest roots in Orlane? You see, I'm something of a student of history, and I'd love to find out more about the town's history while I'm here. Is there a town elder or someone who keeps the town's records?"
After Xanrym gets that answer and knows where to find his room, he thanks Bertram and turns to go. But then he turns back after a few steps and says, "Oh! Just one more thing before I retire for the night. A friend told me to find someone if I came to Orlane, probably working as a bodyguard. What's their name? Sounded like a bird....Robin? No. Or....Hawk? Finch? Ah, I remember! Raven. That is, Wraven Southeart. Do you know where I could find them?"
Xanrym tries to pay attention to Bertram's answer to see whether the name triggers any particular response or emotion. (Insight9)
Lldryn - You successfully hide atop the roof of the Golden Grain and see a little activity. The first thing you notice is two masked figures leaving the large house near the lake (10) and go into the smaller house over the road (9). You also see the two men who were with Sir Grover going into the large building behind the Constable's Quarters, you now would know is the Barracks (3), and they are armed to the teeth.
Xandrym - "Hmm, there is Mayor Ormond of course, Zakarius Ormond, he's a fine man. Fought in the Troll Wars i believe and came back here to help out. Eventually became mayor. His house is by the lake there (10). There's also the old widow Vilma in the cottage next to the temple (20). She's the oldest in town and knows just about everyone. Although if i were you i'd leave them both alone, they're unlikely to trust strangers. Best just to finish your business at the temple tomorrow, come back here for a drink, then head off. This town isn't what it used to be." He genuinely doesn't know the name Wraven. "Never heard of 'em"
He will also inform you that theres a room with four beds in and two single rooms over the corridor. If Maajid is with you he'll take one of the singles, you all can decide who takes the other. The rest of you can stay in the four dorm.

Xanrym acknowledges that last comment with as neutral of a reply as he can, "Thank you. Yes, we met some people on the road who had left Orlane. Sadly, even great cities rise and fall in the great sweep of history." Then he says, with a mischievous smile, "But to unearth the true story of a place, sometimes historians have to be bold, willing to ask questions and dig up dusty old tales."
He genuinely doesn't know the name Wraven. "Never heard of 'em"
"OK," Xanrym says breezily, "I mean -- maybe I don't even have the name right! Thank you, again, for your hospitality. I'll let you get back to closing up. Good night!"
I'm just conducting a couple of things in secret with one or two players. I'll continue on with the adventure when that's finished up, hopefully a day or two.
I remain on the roof observing. I am going to sleep lightly providing I see nothing threatening throughout the hours to what the equivalent of second watch would be.

(OOC: Not sure whether it's too late for tonight...)
Once everyone is in the shared room for the night, or perhaps everyone except for Lldryk -- "Does anyone know where Lldryk went? Is he planning to share the room?" -- Xanrym rigs a bit of string with a bell on it so that if anyone opens their door while they're sleeping, the bell will ring. Then he settles into bed and reads a bit in the dim light cast by Theldrin's candle until he falls asleep.
Xanrym wakes up in bed in the middle of the night, 2am or around. Realising he had planned on setting up this bell contraption but forgot. Does he get out of bed and set it up?
Xanrym wakes up in bed in the middle of the night, 2am or around. Realising he had planned on setting up this bell contraption but forgot. Does he get out of bed and set it up?
Yes. He shakes his head at his carelessness. When he saw Theldrin light a candle, he just thought he'd take advantage of the light to read a bit, but he knows that it's a bad idea to start reading when he hasn't finished everything he was planning to do before going to sleep. He doesn't even remember setting down the book to go to sleep!
Trying to be quiet (Stealth8) so that he doesn't wake the others, Xanrym gets up to rig the bell at the door. He tries to look first to see whether Lldryk is in his bed. (Perception10)
(OOC: It's that one. Disadvantage is just on the dice roll, and then apply all bonuses apply to the lowest roll. Note that you can include disadvantage in a single "roll" in the forum. You can set Advantage or drop dice? in the pop-up dialog to Disadvantage. Or, if you're writing the rolls by hand, it looks like this without the extra spaces: [ roll ]1d20da+3[ /roll ]. Advantage is similar, but it would be 1d20ad. When the dice roller tooltips in the forum are working, that gives you a single value in your post, but the tooltip shows the two rolls and which one was used, like this: 14.)

He isn't, and neither is Avery. Both beds are empty. It's just you and Theldrin in the room.
Oh! Hm. Then before he sets up the bell, Xanrym first opens the door to check whether he can see or hear Avery (or Lldryk) in the hallway. (Perception16)
If not, Xanrym will go ahead and put on his armor and his belt / scabbard. Then he wakes Theldrin quietly, whispering, "Theldrin, wake up. Sshhh. It's the middle of the night, but it looks like Lldryk never came to bed, and Avery isn't in his bed either. It might be nothing, but with the talk of people in Orlane disappearing, I wanted to let you know. I was thinking of checking on Maajid and making seeing whether Avery went down to the common room or something."
Theldrin wakes with a start, gripping Xanrym's arm. He looks around the room as the dream fades and his mind clears, he soon realizes what Xanrym is saying. Nodding silently he gets up and gets dressed and ready to go.
Lldryk - You find yourself dosing off, unable to focus on the village while so tired.
Xanrym - When you check the hallway, you hear nothing. Like literally nothing, when in your room you can hear insects and the groaning of buildings. In the hallway you hear complete silence, as though something is stopping noise from getting in. Unsettling.

Xanrym relays this fact to Theldrin once the wizard is awake. Xanrym puts on his remaining gear (backpack, lyre, crossbow), explaining himself, "Always best to be ready to leave without needing to come back here, just in case."
Saying that, Xanrym thinks to check whether Avery's gear (e.g., greatsword, greataxe, chainmail, backpack) are still in the room. If Avery just decided to go down to get a drink or something, he probably wouldn't take his gear. But if he heard something suspicious, he presumably would have taken at least one of his weapons even if he didn't don his armor or take his pack.
For now, Xanrym stows his crossbow, but he arms himself with his short sword. He suggests that Theldrin make them a light but keep it covered for now so that they don't give themselves away when they step into the hallway.
When Theldrin is ready, Xanrym will step into the hallway first. He looks back at Theldrin and says, "Follow me," partially just to check whether he can make a sound once he's in the hallway. If not, that'll certainly limit what spells he can use while he's in the hallway. While keeping his eyes on Maajid's room, Xanrym first walks to Liarin's door. Assuming that they cannot make sound, he points at Theldrin and then Liarin's door, hoping that they can add her to their number before they check Maajid's room and go looking for Avery.
Theldrin rubs the sleep from his eyes as he gets ready and decides how to proceed. He briefly considers casting Detect Magic as a Ritual, but decides it would take too much time. He grabs the stubby remnant of the candle by his bedside and casts Light upon it, then tucks it away in his pouch. He then casts Mage Hand just before leaving the room, leaving the spectral glowing hand suspended in the room for now as he follows Xanrym out the door.

No objections from Xanrym. "I'm just happy that we're sleeping at an inn and not out in some troglodyte-infested forest!"
Theldrin replies to Liarin, "Of course."
He soon retires to the room, sitting on the edge of his bed and reading a book by candlelight for a while.
You all turn in for the night

Roll a Perception check for me. With disadvantage because you would be pretty tired and distracted trying to keep watch and sleep.

(I guess that's some sort of DEX check to rig a bell like that: Thieves' Tools or Sleight of Hand: 13.)
