This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The Grick finally goes down to Xanrym's Spear with a gasping scream. However, the Gibbering Mouther still seems to be coming on, laughing and rollicking toward Coriana. It makes a Bite attack, and anyone in it's area of effect must make a WIS Save or be subject to an effect: 1-4: Do Nothing, 5-6: Take no action or Bonus Action and uses all your movement to move in a random direction, 7-8: Make a melee attack against a randomly determined creature within its reach or do nothing if it can’t make such an attack: 1
Bite against Coriana Attack: 3 Damage: 7 Piercing, and Coriana is knocked Prone.
You all are up. The Grick and the Otyugh are dead, but anyone within the Gibbering Mouther's gibber area must make a DC 10 WIS Save at the start of their turn or must do nothing for their turn.
Theldrin shakes off the strange sounds in his head and focuses on the Gibbering Mouther, carefully aiming a Fire Bolt at the strange creature. He then moves 10 feet away to the northeast.
"That thing confuses its prey with its voice!" Khessa warns everyone "Let's spread out," she suggests "so it can't affect more than one of us at a time!"
The blonde arcane warrior sets a good example early on, moving south [[ OOC: or the bottom of the map ]] and blasting the creature from a distance with fire magic.
[[ OOC: Movement: 6 squares south. Action: Fire Bolt ]]
Xanrym doesn't need Khessa's warning to know that he should keep his distance from the many-mouthed monster. He has studied the power and magic of the spoken word, and he has no desire to get closer to the maddening voices of this creature. Xanrym mocks it, saying, "So many mouths, so many voices, but they'll all be silenced if they cannot speak as one!" He moves first to pick up the crossbow that he dropped earlier, and then he moves northeast to stay north of Theldrin and within the Light of his staff.
Xanrym also encourages Coriana just to get away from the thing: "Coriana, you've already been abducted by an Otyugh today. Don't let that thing puts its mouths on you!"
(OOC: Xanrym would give Coriana bardic inspiration here to ensure that the Gibbering Mouther doesn't confuse her. But one can have "only one Bardic Inspiration die at a time," and I don't think that she has used the bardic inspiration he gave her at the start of this fight yet.)
Movement: Northeast, ending about 10-ft north of Theldrin. Action: Cast spell Vicious Mockery on the Gibbering Mother, WIS 15 save or target takes 9 (psychic) damage and has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. Bonus Action: Grant Coriana bardic inspiration if she already used the inspiration he provided earlier. Free Action: Item interaction: equip crossbow.
(OOC: It looks like Xanrym is starting his turn just outside the effect of the Gibbering Mouther's maddening voices, so no saving throw needed this round.)
Round 6: Xanrym Action: Cast spell Vicious Mockery on the Gibbering Mother, WIS 16 save or target takes 9 (psychic) damage and has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn.
(OOC: Replying instead of editing so that I don't trigger the dice manipulation. The save DC should be 16: I had forgotten to update my template for Vicious Mockery to include the bonus from using Rhythm-Maker's Drum as a focus.)
(OOC: I think Avery should be at 48 HP? Unless something changed after post #4184)
(OOC: Yes, you're right. Even better. I edited my previous post to correct it. When I originally posted, I just checked my local doc that I use to track my PbP games, and I see that I had neglected to add Syllen's last Healing Word+Chalice Starry Form.)
(OOC: @Charwoman_Gene - Coriana should still have bardic inspiration, as I mentioned in post #4199 above. So, you could roll a 1d8 and add that to her saving throw.)
All of these attacks hit, as the Mouther only has an AC of 9. The Mouther saves from Xanrym's Mockery, but not from the bite of Coriana's sword. The screaming wretch dissolves into a puddle of goo and teeth. The aberrations are dead, and you get a good look around the cavern you're in.
It is a great Underdark vista lit by glimmering lights above and light shining through enormous columns that march into the misted distance. The benighted waters of a sunless sea meet a pebble-strewn shore a half-mile or so away. Across that dark water, a city glows around the base of the nearest column. A cobbled road, which emerges from an opening in the dimly glowing cavern wall about a quarter-mile to the left passes within 50 feet of you and continues on to the right. It finally connects to a narrow but elongated stone formation that spans the shadowy sea, reaching more than a mile to the city. You see a small wagon heading along the road toward the city, driven by what looks to be a dwarf. The travel tune it sings can clearly be heard, grimmer and deeper than dwarven songs you've heard before.
