Auriel and Hex are able to determine that the man has been dead for around a tenday and a half. Pipyap looks bored and impatient as he answers, "No. It would take more than a few arrows to take Halvin down." The imp crosses his arms as if the mere idea is offensive.
The rotting body has ten days of trail rations, a dagger, ten arrows, a single ruby, and a crude map of the surrounding area tucked into his satchel.
Carl walks forward to examine the body, squatting and gently pulling out the map, examining it to see if he can determine landmarks, location and any notes. Out of the side of his mouth, he says “I looked around, but can’t tell if anyone is watching us. Do any of you see anyone..?” His eyes flit around as he looks from time to time for any movement as he investigates the map.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
"It's unlikely anyone would be around. They've been dead for over a tenday," Hex replies to Carl. She takes most of the man's belongings, leaving the weapons and taking the arrows for herself before dividing the rations equally to everyone. She turns the ruby in her hand, looking for any symbol carved into it like the stones found in the villager's eye sockets. "I wonder what he was doing with this. I guess we should hold onto it for now. Might come in handy."
"That ruby could be this man's life savings. Perhaps he brought it with him in the hopes of bargaining for Halvin's life" Auriel tells Hex, but he doesn’t dwell anymore on this, since his focus is elsewhere. Now that they have finished examining the body, the eladrin doesn’t want to leave it lying in the middle of the path. Knowing that time is of the essence and that they cannot bury or burn the body properly, he decides to at least drag it toward the biggest tree he can see nearby and let it rest next to its roots, so they offer some cover from any wildlife that might roam the land. Then, he arranges the arms so they are crossed over the chest - giving it a peaceful pose - and shrouds it with fallen branches and leaves. Once this is done, Auriel kneels next to the mound, places the garlad he had previously tied to the halberd on the body's chest and mutters a short prayer.
After that, he stands up and says, "I hope the rest were luckier". Then he walks up next to Carl, checking the map with him.
Sylyra watches the others mill about the body from his short distance further up the path. He is full of conflicting emotions, and he is frustrated in himself for it. Scowling, he leans against a tree and reaches into his pack for some berries. He closes his eyes, savoring the taste of the little orbs as they are crushed within his mouth. He opens his ears to listen to the sounds of nature — however unnatural — around them. Did this feel like home? This is where his ancestors were from, wasn't it? Or some wilderness like it?
Uragum made a "Tisk" sound by clicking his tongue in disgust. "I can't say I favor the tactics, ambushes and assassinations and all that. Though, I can recognize their efficiency... At least it was quick..." he says. He gripped his staff and hung it over his shoulder and sighed. "At least we can be sure this one isn't a dragon."
OOC: Added two days of rations to each character's inventory. Added the ruby and 10 arrows to Hex's inventory.
There is something uneasy about the silence and the lack of presence in the nearby area, despite the fact that nobody detects anyone around. The corpse littered with arrows on the forest floor is a foreboding omen. Serelis glances around with the rest of the party, eyes darting between trees. Pipyap seems bored, yawning; his eyes seem to be more interested in finding a spot to nap as he continues to work off his large meal from a couple days ago.
The map contains a rough sketch of the local area. Despite being rather crude, Carl and Auriel are able to read it well enough to discern the party's current location on the map. Based on that information, the map depicts Greenhall as being another day's travel away.
With threats seemingly all around, Uragum makes sure that his mage armor is active. He doesn't want to be caught unawares. Then rubbing his chin in thought he says, "Needless to be said we must remain aware. But how do we proceed. Shall we remain a tight group, easier to react together but also more noticeable. Do we sent one to travel a head as bait to entice an attack with the rest of the group ready to rush forward. Or maybe have one lag behind and rush to flank any would be attackers of the group..."
Uragum's thoughts are interrupted as the air shimmers in the forest around you. With a snarling crash, two large monstrosities lunge from the surrounding canopy to the forest floor, stalking their prey. These monsters would resemble sleek panthers were it not for their six legs and two tentacles sprouting from their shoulders, both ending in pads tipped with spiky protrusions. The beasts' eyes glow with an awful malevolence as they close in.
Round 1 Order: Players <===== Displacer Beasts
Placement: All combatants are within movement range of one another.
Hex jumps back as the Displacer Beasts suddenly appear from nowhere. She immediately pulls out her bow, swiftly nocking an arrow and aiming at the beasts. She calls out to Serelis, her voice full of confusion and concern. "Is it normal for these creatures to be here!?"
(As usual, holding attack in case someone manages to get a hit on one of beasts for Colossus Slayer. Also popping Favored Foe.)
OOC: Shoot, I knew I forgot something. All attack rolls against these creatures are made with disadvantage. I'll double check all the rolls once I resolve.
Auriel was still pondering who might have given the map to the dead villager when the sounds of the two onyx stalkers roused him. "I had hoped to reach Greenhall without a fight," he said, feeling disheartened. Nevertheless, he reacted quickly and gripped his halberd, which flashed brightly as the paladin turned that momentary disappointment into anticipation for the upcoming fight.
Uragum turns to the threat with a tight lipped smile that then turns to a real smile. "Not what I was expecting but at least it's straight forward." He rolls his shoulders and spins his staff. "Oh here kitty kitty kitty," he says. He points to his eyes and then to the cat's eyes as he casts a spell.

Going to slowly move behind Auriel as she is more tank like with all those sweet sweet hit points.
Action: cast blindness on one. It needs to make a dc 14 con save or be blinded. Can make a new save at the end of each turn to try and remove the condition.
Reaction if applicable: arcane deflection for +2 ac or +4 to a save
Carl reflexively brings up his hand and a crackle of eldritch energy bursts forth from his fingertips, aimed at the closest beast, but he has trouble locking onto the target. He backs up and tries to find cover. “I don’t like the look of them at all…”
Eldritch blast : 10 to hit, for 8 points of force damage.

Sylyra scowls. He dislikes having to fight these beautiful beasts, but if it's them or him, he's going to triumph. A short, but complicated string of words spoken in Druidic accompanies a strange wave of his hand just before he slams his staff into the ground. A shower of light motes rains down from the mistletoe tied to the end of his staff, and a moonbeam cuts through the tree canopy, aimed at the nearest of the displacer beasts. He then moves around behind the nearest tree, putting it between him and the displacer beast.
CON 15 saving throw on start of turn — it takes 2d10 radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
The panther-like beasts seem to be shifting their positions in an unnatural way; their approach disturbs the forest floor, but not directly underneath them, as if you aren't seeing their actual physical location. Hex sees this in the split second it takes for her to nock an arrow. The beasts even seem to be shaking off Uragum's attempt to magically blind them, and Sylyra's moonbeam, but Hex's arrow meets its target; strangely, to the side of the beast, but as the arrow strikes it the creature's physical form snaps back to its actual location, arrow lodged in its side as its perceived illusion is temporarily disrupted. The beast bounds beneath Carl's eldritch blast and charges for Auriel, whose weapon glows with divine light and keeps the creature's tentacles at bay.
The other beast lands near Hex. She dodges one tentacle but a second slams into her side, knocking her off balance and piercing her skin.
Round 2 Order: Players <===== Displacer Beasts
Placement: Auriel is engaged in melee combat with one displacer beast. Hex is engaged in melee combat with the other displacer beast. All combatants are within movement range of one another.
Health: The displacer beast fighting Auriel is lightly wounded.
Hex hisses through the pain as the beast tears through her skin and steels herself for another potential attack as she rushes past the beast and back towards the rest of the party. Instead of taking a shot, she lowers her bow momentarily and holds out her free hand towards the beast before quickly clenching her fist and snapping it back to herself as though pulling on an invisible rope. The earth beneath the beast begins to faintly rumble before weeds and vines suddenly burst forth, curling around its legs and attempting to restrain it.
Movement: 30ft towards the rest of the party.
Action: Casting Entangle beneath the displacer beast and placing it so that the beast has to move through most of the difficult terrain to reach everyone.
