The eagle looks at you and speaks, "Certainly I can. But once I have done this thing and accepted your offering I will move on." The eagle flaps its wings and takes off into the setting sun.
Does anyone have anything they'd like to do while awaiting the eagle's return? Preparations or perhaps some campfire tales?
After an hour or so, the eagle comes back and talks to you directly, "Your small friends have been captured. They met with some warriors who beat and took them away." The eagle takes the ration you offer it and flies away.
"Well, looks our dwarven hirers should've thought to bring us along." says Draíocht as he explains what the eagle has relayed. "I'm keen to follow their trail now, even if it's dark. How about you guys?" He draws out the goblin shortbow and arrow.
Seems you're all in favour of rescuing the dwarves then. You pack up as the night comes into full bloom, and the stars serve as your guide to the spot the eagle described. You find the cart the dwarves were transporting upturned and ruined, with traces of blood and desperate footprints on the ground. The mule they were travelling with is dead on the ground, stabbed with spear or sword.
You see evidence of horse hooves coming to the site and leaving in the same direction south. The horses were carrying more passengers away than they carried in. It will still require a Survival roll to track them as the hills don't have a lot of loose ground to follow obvious prints.
You manage to track the hoof prints south a few miles, where you spot what look like men in armour standing near a crudely erected wooden archway. Can someone please roll a Perception check for me.
Valar will keep to the shadows under the trees and observe the actions of the armored men. Do they appear to be guarding, are they attentive, do they look like they know what they are doing, or are they armored thugs. (Perception: 5 / Investigation: 14)
Valar finds it hard to judge the armoured men, but they are certainly wearing metal armour.
Thelanis' observations reveal more. She sees that they are guarding an entrance in the side of the hill. Many rocks surround this entrance, revealing it must be some kind of mine. Just beyond the entrance to the mine, on the other side of the hill from the guards, she notices another hole. This one is clearly used less, but still looks as though it leads into the same mine.
Valar keeps his eyes on the guards, to see if they are being attentive in their duties, or can they get around them and perhaps use the other entrance (Perception: 14)
Draíocht sees Amiz ready to ambush. Preparing for that he attempts to blend into the trees. "Think we can take them before they'd able to run?" he whispers, "If so, makes sense to me rather than trying the other entrance."
Seems like you're going to try and sneak up and ambush the soldiers. I'll let the others weigh in on that plan and roll stealth checks if they want before moving forward.
Alright i'll assume that Thelanis and Amiz are staying back and watching.
Valar and Draíocht are able to sneak up on the guards and get a good look at their faces. They see pointed ears and red skin. Their armour is crude yet sturdy, and tufts of hair stick out the sides.
Hobgoblins, 6 of them.
They haven't noticed you, and if you wanted to take a surprise round you could. Although both Thelanis and Amiz are both out of melee at the moment, i'd say they could get to within 60ft of the hobgoblins. 30ft if they took the Dash action.

Amiz follows along from a distance as his armor will definitely give him away.

You could definitely try stealthing around them. Each of you would need to make a stealth check individually.
Amiz hangs back to wait for a signal in the event his other companions wish to ambush these strangers.
