Augustus, holding his position at the front to peer over the edge blocks the path of the others for the moment. His eyes sweep over the deck, taking in what remains of the once proud vessel.
The moldering wood of the deck is slick with algae and seawater. Amid the tangle of rigging, splintered railings, and stray seaweed, he spots boots, bones, and bits of gore that seem considerably more recent than the wreck of this ship.
Stairs lead to upper decks at fore (front) and aft (rear), and
Two sets of doors beneath each each set of stairslead into cabins under those decks.
The mainmast remains intact and mostly upright, topped with a crow’s nest overflowing with debris. A tattered rope ladder leads up to that perch.
A staircase near the mast and a large hatch on the port side both lead down into the hold.
Vinn waits for the rest of his companions to climb up the rig, taking the rear. Confused by Murlock's response with plugged ears, he stays diligent for any undead and their foot. His wiry arms ache from the climb.
Upon reaching the top of the Compass Rose, Vinn is shocked by what he sees. The young druid considers the series of unfortunate events (or The Platinum Plume's lucky events) that led to the massive wreck. He reaches out to Sir Beauregard, mouthing "rabbit's foot" when he catches the knight's attention.
Silver will think quickly upon seeing the seemingly clear deck and signal to the others that he's going over. In a fluid motion, he will hoist himself up and swing both legs over the railing, using a bit of hanging rope to stabilize himself, lowering himself down slowly onto whichever plank seems the least rotten and potentially creaky. Looking back over, he'll signal for others to join him, his other hand with a finger over his lips in a a shushing motion, and point out each of the noted stairs and doors, finally pointing up to the crows nest where he'll form a "W" and a "C" with his hands to Morlock and Ziegler for "Willion Cromwell". He'll allow any others that want to climb over to join him before suggesting with a silent point of his finger that they head for the Aft Starboard cabin.
Ziegler covers both ears with the pieces of wax, then climbs up the rigging to join the others on The Compass Rose. Once on the deck, he'll sweep his eyes around. Assuming the mast is still intact, he'll see if there is a "crow's nest". If there is one, he'll gesture to the others (points to himself, and then points to the crow's nest, then shrugs at the others).
Silver will nod at Ziegler, pointing at the tattered rope and miming giving it a tug to ensure its strength before climbing it. He'll point to himself and Sir Beauregard and mime catching something heavy, then follow Ziegler to the bottom of the mast and get ready to catch him if climbing should prove too difficult.
Sir Beauregard hops over the railing and moves on to the deck just enough to give room for the others to join. He sees Silver making a ‘W’ and a ‘C’ and wonders if he’s suggesting it’s a good place to relieve one’s self before he remembers the name of the sailor being sought. He peers at the bones and gore and looks for feathers that may suggest Harpies or complete bodies that may suggest undead.
As Ziegler moves to prepare to climb the mast to the crow’s nest, Sir Beauregard repositions himself to protect those at the base of the mast from attack should it come from the ground. He finds the experience of preparing to face death with his ears plugged with wax oddly peaceful.
Ziegler gives the rope to the crow's nest a tug to ensure security, then begins climbing. Once he reaches the crow's nest, he'll look around in the crow's nest as well as around the ship and surrounding area.
The hemp rope ladder to the Crow's Nest creeks and sheds a bit as Augustus tugs on it, but it seems to hold firm.
Meanwhile, Sir Beauragard'scareful study of the ship's deck does indeed reveal a few large feathers and weird, large droppings... too humanoid to be avian and too avian to be humanoid.
Zeigler's tug further confirms that the rope ladder can bare his weight...However, the mast sways alarmingly he makes climb... at the top of the 50-foot ascent he finds that he is leaning out over the water on the port (north) side of the ship. The basket-shaped area is stuffed with wood shavings, dry grass, and shredded canvas from ships’ sails. Bits of bones, tufts of hair, and shiny baubles form a sort of "nest" filled with tiny baubles...
Most of it is junk, but there are a few valuables amid the dreck... a small gold bracelet worth 25 gp, a single gold hoop earring worth 25 gp, two small tiger eye gems worth 10 gp each, and one bloodstone gem worth 50 gp.
Down below, Vinnand Morlockdo their best to stay on guard... occasionally hearing the creaking of movement down below (or is that just the wreck settling) or emerging from the water (or is that just the lapping waves)....

Augustus sees the mast swaying and waves for Zeigler to grab what he can and hurry back. Placing his hands hopelessly on the mast to try and help stabilize it.
Once Zeigler is safe on the ground again, Augustus will move for the Aft Starboard cabin door and try the handle to check if it's locked. If unlocked, he'll try to carefully open the door and slip inside, blinking quickly to adjust his eyes to the expected darkness.
As the party continues to spread and search, Vinn cannot let go of his curiosity of what's creaking below. The odd elemental magic in the atmosphere chills him like haunting whispers.
Vinn creeps towards the hatch, and stares into the darkness below, trying to identify any signs of life (or undeath). If he senses nothing, Vinn grabs an extra odd carrot from his pocket and drops it through the grate. The nervous druid waits to hear the bump against the floorboard or the splash of water.
Ziegler takes the valuables and stores them into his backpack. Seeing nothing else, he begins to climb down the mast, being careful to balance his weight so it doesn't list further. Once on the deck, he unslings his spear and then tell the others (whispering into their ears) of the findings (including the random jewels) in the crow's nest and his belief that it was or is likely a nest.
Silver will nod in response to the report about the nest, give a thumbs up to the two at the hatch, and point at both of his eyes, then up, meaning "keep an eye on the sky". Then he'll double check that his earplugs are securely placed before continuing with the Aft Starboard cabin
Augustus places his hand on the cabin door and slowly pushes it open, releasing a stale exhalation of air saturated with the smell of moldering wood and standing water...
Inside he sees what must have once been a crew's quarters. Six double bunks line the edges of this cabin. Personal effects are strewn about the room, and a faded, painted portrait hangs on one wall.
Meanwhile, Vinn and Sir Beauregard move to the hatch. Moments after Vinn drops the carrot down into the hatch, they both hear the sound of water sloshing down beneath followed by a wet gaggling, wheezing sound... There's definitely something down there... and Sir Beauregard's Divine Sense immediately picks up the reek of undeath.
The paladin can easily identify the entity directly beneath the hatch. But the potency of the stench suggests there's much more than this one lost soul within the range of the sense... As well as something much more profane and powerful down in the very depths of the ship's hold.
