Ic. Smudge. You’re a light cleric correct? Asking bc I will occasionally cast darkness on myself and want to ensure your bright lights don’t dispel. I’ve heard of light clerics bringing forth daylight to destroy vampires and want to ensure I don’t loose any tactical advantage because I forgot to tell you I’m casting darkness on purpose.
Everyone gets a good night's sleep, and you head out on the path heading West again.
You get through 1/2 the day and both Lars and Runok alert you to a Giant Scorpion up ahead.
You have time to down your potions and antitoxins along with spell prep as you continue forward. You get to 30 yards away. It sensed you from 60 ft though as hit turned around to face you head-on. A thought crosses your mind to drink a Potion of fire resistance.
Ral takes his Potion of Heroism, Antitoxin and Fire Resistance. Ral begins to Rage too.
Roll for initiative....I am delaying the encounter tracker intentionally...
Ooc any chance we saw this scorpion prior to 60 (or we didn’t see if but it noticed us at 60 feet ) Ie closer to 120. I loose a lot of tactical advantage by trying to move to 30’ away. If possible I’d like (in general) try to have conversations around what we do when we’re closer to 120’ away. Especially since the casters in group get 2ish rounds of range attacks in. And in some cases kill prior to risking HP.
Completely understand if surprises or something else prevents us from being further away
and also understand (and can easily support) if the party wants to try and surprise monsters by using stealth to approach and I can easily adjust not attacking at 100’ range If the party decides to do that

Since these are scripted encounters the roll for distance from the creature placed it at 30ft from you.
Threat Table (1-4), Threat selection (1-12), Distance, Direction N1,S2,E3,W4, Time
In this case it was 30 ft.
Whenever you or others admin an encounter you are free to modify with as much flavor as you would like.
So, you are in a magical forest and magically a portal opened up and a Giant Scorpion appeared 30 ft from you.
I don't want you to think I'm mad. I'm not...I'm just explaining this format. Perhaps if you look at page one of the DMless forest forum and look through the encounter tables you'll see how they are put together at least how they are determined.

Ahhh
makes sense. Honestly. Just trying to understand as well have not played these type of adventures. Did not know the distance element was already prescribed.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The scorpion advances 30ft to engage Ral and Smudge...Two huge pinchers/claws strike and attempt to grapple each of them.
Both attacks miss with an 8 and 12 so no grapple.
The scorpion then attacks with its stinger with a 10 and misses with it as well.
Ral has init:
"The beastie has a temper and it's huge", exclaims Ral!!! "Look out it has three attacks it seems, and the claws are trying to grapple us."
Ral uses his inspiration for advantage not wanting to go reckless attacking until he knows how hard it is to hit the beast.
Ral with Rage First Creature hit on his turn.
MOVE:Ral stands his ground; (spending 30 feet of movement; first diagonal costs 5 ft. of movement, second costs 10 ft., third costs 5 ft., etc.) BONUS:
ACTION:Ral stands his ground and swings at the Scorpion with his Maul+1Attack #1:14 Damage: 12 (Bludgeoning) + 4 (Radiant) = 16
Attack #2:21 Damage: 13 (Bludgeoning)
End of turn!
Reaction:Attacks of opportunity.
Attack #2: 26 Damage: 27 (Bludgeoning)
End of turn!
Reaction:Attacks of opportunity.

Yes to both
yup, smudge is a light cleric. i will try not to turn them on if you are being stealthy....
both forest adventure and a full campaign sound good. may need a few more PCs, but there are always players wanting to join good groups such as this.
True.

I think we were talking to each other about the mechanics/interactions of darkness and light spells.

The Giant Scorpion is apparently very hungry or had advance notifications you were nearby. Grin.
At the same time Lars and Runok communicate with Petnan and Darbahk. PM will be sent.
