Like countless other artificer gizmos, Capone was built for a specific task, to assist in making potions. But his creator was short of the correct arcane crystal matrixes for his power core, and experimented with some unstable flux crystals from the far realms. It ... produced Capone. A fully sentient self actualized autonomous construct, who can delve into peoples minds and bend their wills.
Needless to say, that's not what you're looking for in an alchemy-bot, and he was "asked" to leave. Decades later he has travelled far from his origin in the gnomish underdark city far across the globe. He is driven to explore this incredible world in which he never truly feels at home in.
Race: Autognome
Class: Sorcerer (Aberrant Mind)
What brings you to Phandelver, and why would you join with the other adventurers to find the Wave Echo Cave?
Capone is a plucky explorer. He is always happy to get involved in danger and intrigue, and he loves to travel. Nothing makes him happier than to be adopted by a band of adventurers and made to feel useful, a feeling that was long ago denied to him, as he was cast out and abandoned by his creator for failing to meet his expectations.
He will have normal starting equipment + 725 gold.
Description and Image:
Capone is a 3ft pipsqueak who loosly disguises his mechanical nature by wearing a fake beard and keeping his trusty cloak's hood up. It... works well enough at a long distance.
It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.
Character's name: Loken Character background: Outlander
Loken is a carefree satyr from the feywild, born with a spark of that wild realm inside him. Race: Satyr Class: Barbarian - Path of Wild Magic What brings you to Phandelver, and why would you join with the other adventurers to find the Wave Echo Cave?
When roaming the feywild one day, Loken happened on a pool in a secluded glade, and upon diving in he found himself on the material plane. Since then, he has lived as an adventurer, cheerfully tackling everything this world can throw at him. Loken lives in the here and now, and makes the most of every moment. Dragons? Treasure? Death a likely outcome? Count him in!
Your chosen free Feat: Great Weapon Master Your chosen magical Items: Periapt of Wound Closure, Mithral Half-plate, +2 Greataxe Starting gold and equipment - Loken still has a bit of gold from his latest caper, and of the rest of his inventory the only noteworthy item is a diamond worth 300gp.
I think they might have either Ruined or Rewarded as their background, which grants one of a list of certain feats like Skilled, Skill Expert, Magic Initiate, Lucky, Tough, or Alert.
I considered it myself, but the scientist background was calling to me.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nope. Background is Far Traveler, no feats associated.
Extra feat is using the Custom Lineage feat for Telepathic. Lv 4 ASI for Telekinetic. And the free feat is Skill Expert. (Generally VH/Custom still gets their racial feat when free feats are in play, so understandable oversight with the special rule for this campaign.)
Also, since I'm making a post here already, why not roll stats just to get the creative juices rolling?
Thanks all. I’ve added an additional bit to the front page to clarify regarding background. I’ve played dragonlance, and I’ve read Bigby’s and skimmed the BoMT and just forgot about background feats.
I’ve seen campaigns where there’s an approved list of non half-feats for level 1, and lots where there’s a free feat for all and then as normal.
The reason for the slightly odd middle ground is to try and open up all the other things as much as possible. If you want lucky or strike of the giants and the rewarded or foundling background you still can, but if you want to be a Half Elf with Elven Accuracy which seems just as characterful to me then you can do that without losing mechanical advantage (while also avoiding situations where someone with race and background ends up with four feats and so has a huge advantage possibly against someone who chose differently and has 1 + ASI). Feats are flavour and interesting, to my mind.
But yeah. Thanks for clarifying. Apologies if the feat thing is coming off weird/unusual. I just thought it’d be neat.
Workshopping a wizard idea. (Looks like there haven't been any wizard apps yet. Also got some other ideas I'm thinking through as possibilities.)
Two questions.
1: Are you fine with homebrew replicas of official material? (ie: Not owning an official spell/etc on DDB so making a copy of it.)
2: For wizards scribing additional spells, would you be considering the scrolls as some of their magic items? Or would that be standard stuff to buy?
1. That’s fine as official material replication to me.
2. For first level spells, they’re common so can pay ink costs for each, and Xanathar’s scroll price out of starting gold (75gp per first level spell, so if all money spent then 9, which seems reasonable, and is in keeping with the class).
Second and third level would be an uncommon item choice, but recognising the trade off of an item that’s persistent but you may grow out of vs a third level spell that you may always cast but will also cost a spell slot, yes can start scribed. I’m leaning toward saying as it’s starting off and a character generation choice don’t worry about paying ink/scroll costs if you choose this as an uncommon item, it’s enough of a trade off for the start of the adventure. Wizards are meant to know magic. It’s the class fantasy. Enjoy.
You could choose a rare fourth or fifth level spell scroll, too, and wait for level 7 or 9, respectively. In game, time and ink would be needed.
What brings you to Phandelver, and why would you join with the other adventurers to find the Wave Echo Cave? Heard disturbing rumors about strange energies in the area and suspect the old mine is the source.
Your chosen free Feat (if you don't get already free feat with Variant Human/Custom Lineage with feat as part of Race. N.B. Also those swanky Krynn/Bigby/Many Thing backgrounds with feats. Only 1 free feat for all. Choose that strong featless race or background you’ve always wanted and then throw a feat in. Go nuts) Sharpshooter
Your chosen magical Items (Two Uncommon and One Rare)* Bracers of Archery, Studded Leather +1, Longbow of Warning
Normal starting equipment + 725 gold / common equipment up to the value of 725 gold Just took starting equipment, keeping the gold for now.
I'll take a whack at it. I have a few questions myself. What are your thoughts on using other character builders? I usually use DiceCloud, because I find it easier to work with and I have all my content on there. If not, completely fine!
