"Sounds good to me," Kessintra replies to Zan, "I plan to haunt the tavern for a bit." She will head back to the tavern, order an ale, and take a seat in a dark corner to observe the room and listen out for any gossip, particularly about the accusations against the travelers.
Chipper: "How about this: I give you 15 gp up front, and when you return you tell me the story of how you got them to leave. I'll pay you appropriately."
Amelia: "Of course. I'll send that right away."
Kessintra: Just about all the gossip is about the travelers. Some claim to be victims of their attacks, lining up with what the duchess said. Others have more outrageous stories: That they're from a land of dread, where the sun never shines. They say that the travelers are servants of that land's dark master.

Kessintra is amused by the more fantastical claims, though they do make her think. The old man seemed truthful about the story of their cursed prince, but he had purposely avoided giving more details...She lingers a while longer before returning to her room.
Chipper: "How about this: I give you 15 gp up front, and when you return you tell me the story of how you got them to leave. I'll pay you appropriately."
Amelia walks straight to the barracks, presenting the letter from the duchess and addressing the soldiers with as much courtesy as her proud elven nature allows.
“I am Amelia Moonshine, a cleric of Lord Corellon. I am here at your duchess's request to investigate the travelers outside town. If any of you have spoken with them, please step forward—I’d like to hear your account.”

Afterwards he plans to spend the night in a tree, using some alarms to keep him aware of anything harmful during the night.
The guard looks at the letter and calls out: "Alex! Rich! This lady wants to see you!"
Two soldiers walk up to you in chain shirts, lazily holding a spear and a shield each. The left one speaks first. "The incident, eh? Well, I'd say the weirdest part was that it didn't look like they cast a spell. It just happened."
The other one pipes up. "Yeah, they suddenly seemed so trustworthy. It was obvious afterward that we were charmed."
The effects sound like charm person, but Chipper can remember that charm person has a verbal and somatic component. If it was cast normally, the guards would know that a spell was cast.

Amelia frowns, piecing together the evidence. It seems the travelers used magic to charm the soldiers—but how did they manage it without the usual chant or gesture? She decides to prepare countermeasures for tomorrow.
“Thank you for your help. Here is a reward from the duchess for your service,”
she says, handing two gold pieces to the soldiers. After the conversation, Amelia returns to the inn. Settling in, she writes in her journal, planning how to explain her findings to her companions before entering her meditation.
You all can take a long rest if you haven't already.
You return to the travelers' settlement the next morning. Once again they are dancing and signing as if nothing has happened. The old man looks over to you. "Ah, you all. Ready to go to Barovia?"

Before we go we have some things to discuss. It seems like your group has been causing some trouble to the locals here. Now whether or not this is true is irrelevant, in any case you have overstayed your welcome and they would prefer you gone. If we follow you to Barovia, will your entire group go as well?
Before we agree to go with you, can you tell us how you managed to charm the town guards without V,S components? I’m intrigued at the intricacies of the magic at play.
Garrick tries to persuade the old man into telling him exactly how the spell works. (7, 21) Persuasion - rolled with advantage using my heroic inspiration and then remembered that’s a 2024 rule for human *facepalm*. If DM allows, Garrick received help action from team to get advantage instead, otherwise just use the 7. Hmm we have to return to the Duchess of this town first to let her know the matter is resolved. Then we can go with you. Say, what is your name sir. I am Garrick.
Zan leaves the questioning to the others, wanders the camp till he finds a fire with food stuffs cooking, he'll walk up to the gypsies gathered, new day to you all, might you spare a cup of wake me up for a fellow traveller?
Go ahead and keep the advantage. "Honestly, I don't know how it works. We call it the ''Evil Eye', and it even works on the less intellegent woodland creatures."
One of the travelers replies, "All we have is wine. Is that good?"

"One hour… Hmmm…"
Amelia considers. That sounds like a reasonable duration for an enchantment spell.
“Then, my lady, I have a favor to ask. Could you prepare a letter for me? I plan to visit the barracks and speak with those guards tonight.”
She turns to Chipper.
“Chipper, I’d appreciate your company. Your knowledge will be invaluable for this investigation.”

Garrick is good for a long rest and then to see the travelers in the morning when he set up that appointment with the old storyteller man.

Head back to the inn, grab a mug of mead and hang out in the common room while I drink it. Afterwards I'll get a room then head to it and rest.
