Merkas emerged from the flames, slightly singed but grinning like he’d just pulled off the greatest trick in Krynn. His wild hair was even wilder now, some strands curling from the heat, and his clothes had acquired yet another set of burn marks to add to his growing collection.
Sera let out a long, suffering sigh and shook her head. The little menace had a way of making her want to strangle him and hug him at the same time. He flashed his best winning smile—one she was sure had gotten him out of countless troubles before.
"Merkas..." she muttered, voice heavy with exasperation but already softening. She could never stay mad at him for long, no matter how much he deserved it.
Turning away, she quickly checked on the horses. Their eyes were still wild, nostrils flaring from the lingering scent of smoke, but they were unharmed. That was a small mercy, at least.
With one last glance at the Strider—still restrained, though clearly pissed—she adjusted her grip on her weapons and moved to join Hastos and Sharn. Her eyes swept the rocky terrain, watching the dark cave entrances above with wary intent. If kobolds were going to ambush them, now would be the time. The wind carried the distant howl of something—wolves, maybe—but otherwise, the mountainside was eerily quiet.
Sera took a slow breath and murmured a quiet prayer, fingers tightening around the grip of her sword. Paladine, help us. ( cast guidance)
A familiar warmth bloomed in her chest, not just reassurance, but something deeper—a divine certainty guiding her forward. She let it settle within her, standing firm, her new shield—a teardrop-shaped piece of polished metal—raised and ready. She scanned the cliffy sorroundings but seems no one heard the Strider trouble ( perception 9 ). She deep inside not belived that. But up ahead was the cave entrance.
One way or another, they were getting those crates back.
Sharn looked at his companions. Then, he scanned what he could of the cave entrance. It beckoned them like a hungry maw beckons food.
"Even though we're talking about bandits, I suggest we try to keep them alive when possible. Then again, everyone knows what they're doing. Let's try to survive first. The crates are our priority, of course."
Hastos replies over his shoulder, eyes still locked on the cave entrance. “Probably a good idea. It’d be a lot harder to bargain with a cave full of their dead family members.”
Walking softly over the pressure plate that Kasi points out to you, you make your way inside the cave. Only the faintest light reaches in, and Kasi, Hastos, and Sharn wait for their eyes to adjust to allow for darkvision, granted them a gray view of the winding cave before you.
Sera and Merkas are blind in the dark.
Kasi whispers softly to the group. "Inside three floors down. Queen on third floor. Much crate be there. Walk soft. Look for pressure plates, loose rock, small hole, false floor. Much trap in kobold home."
Inside the cave, it's pleasantly cooler, and a hollow breeze sweeps gently across your foreheads, cooling the sweat that dribbles from your brow.
Spoiler for Hastos and Sharn
Before you, natural and carved tunnels present a maze of confusing passageways designed to confuse and frustrate unwanted visitors. The scene before you is quiet except for the faint dripping sounds of mineral water falling from stalactites onto small puddles. Though you can only see 60' out, you can tell by the echoes of the drips it's much larger... perhaps twice as deep.
The party moved carefully into the darkness of the cave.
Kasi showed they inside, her small frame barely visible ,her movements eerily silent despite her age. Sera couldn't help but think about how easily their new "ally" had turned on her own kind. First, she had betrayed the caravan. Now, she betrayed her fellow kobolds. And, if Sera followed that disturbing pattern of logic, there was always the chance Kasi wasn’t done betraying just yet.
She tried to shake the thought away, but the pitch-black tunnel made it harder to ignore. With no torches lit, the cave swallowed them whole, and even Hastos’ very nice butt disappeared from view.
Finding traps or spotting an ambush like this was next to impossible. Sure, she and Hastos were already walking around like a pair of clanking smithies, but even the dimmest sentries should have heard the chaos outside. If they hadn’t sounded an alarm by now, they were either sleeping, stupid, or already dead.
Despite the obvious logic, she still kept her voice to a whisper.
“…Ehem, guys? I see nothing. I cannot fight. Or cast spells. Merkas sees nothing either.” She could hear Merkas shifting somewhere ahead—probably trying to sneak while blindly bumping into everything.
Sera sighed, gripping her sword’s hilt firmly. A sharp, sudden pulse of pain lanced through her skull. The Geas. A not-so-gentle reminder of why they were even here. They had to retrieve those crates.
“Alright, cover your eyes,” she warned, squaring her stance.
Then, with a quiet breath, she spoke the word that had guided her through so many battles.
“…Father.”
The blade in her hands ignited with a radiant silvery light, flaring to life like a second sun in the cavern’s oppressive darkness. ( make 30 feet bright light and 30 feet dim )
As Hastos finishes his question to the group, he sees light erupt from behind him splling forward into the cavern. “Well, that’s one way..” he says with a chuckle.
Sera give Hastos a smile and look around the damp and waterfilled cave. " they have water..." she states the obvious. " may Paladine guide us..and you Hastos" as she utters her short prayer that give a confidence boost. ( Hastos gets Guidance on him since he is in front and try find traps)
Blinking in the light, Merkas is smiling, from behind Sera (15 stealth) "Oh, I though you were Hastos."He moves around and over to Kasi"Hey Gramma, I got this map of the caves, you think it will help? Oh and do you know of a stream or pool of water in this cave to?" Keeping his voice low and trying to avoid to much chatter.

Once the flame sword springs to life, so does the cavern. Light reflects off sparkling minerals and gemstones embedded into the high ceilings. Strange moss reacts to the light, which glow a bluish hue. Aside from occasional scree, the area is surprisingly tidy. There are no scattered bones, tools, excrement, or other forms of refuse you'd expect to see inside a cave. No bats flutter at the sudden appearance of light. Though the floor is well-worn from foot traffic and cart trails, and it's eerily quiet in the surreal beauty.
Kasi grumbles and rubs her eyes. She didn't pay attention to the whispered warning, and the sudden rush of light dazzled her vision as she scanned the view for potential traps.
As Hastos finishes his question to the group, he sees light erupt from behind him splling forward into the cavern. “Well, that’s one way..” he says with a chuckle.
Hastos's words echo off the cavern walls, and the chuckle reverberates back, a hollow sound that overlaps, as if a half-dozen Hastos's were laughing back at you.
Sera give Hastos a smile and look around the damp and waterfilled cave. " they have water..." she states the obvious. " may Paladine guide us..and you Hastos" as she utters her short prayer that give a confidence boost. ( Hastos gets Guidance on him since he is in front and try find traps)
The water pools that you see also react to the light and give off a bluish, glowing hue.
After Kasi's eyes adjust, she looks at the map, still muttering irritably under her breath. She points a clawed finger onto the map. "Left. Ladder up ahead halfway through cave. Go down chute to second floor."
In front of you, there's a natural wall, and two left turns: a sharp left, and a softer left that curves forward. She's pointing to the softer left, which passes through a narrow tunnel that you'll have to pass through one at a time. When she points at the narrow passage way, she says, "Kasi would put trap there, but is way to ladder."
Crouching low and moving with a silence that matches his stature (stealth 14), Merkas moves forward with Kasi to scout the area for traps and also checking on the blue fungas, pools of water, and watching for anything else of interest (survival 14 + 10 with Buckerans map for 24). He whispers almost inaudibly “Ok Gramma show me how it’s done, you’ve been a good teacher and I would love to learn more”
Gently sidestepped the pools and fungas so as not to make noise, or for some reason set off an alarm, the kender moves to the entrance of the indicated tunnel. Kobold and Kender moving in leapfrog fashion, one indicating the areas clear before the other advances. Merkas comes to the edge of the light from Seras sword and takes a stationary position to wait for the illumination to catch up.
Sharn squinted against the change in light. He peeled his eyes for traps where Kasi indicated, fully ready to take the sharp left right after Hastos. Yet his eyes were not what they used to be. He rubbed them, only to leave his left eye slightly blurrier. (Rolled a 5 for perception looking for traps.)
"Hastos, I'll follow right behind. We can follow the left wall until Kasi gives us the ok to stop. Sera, Merkas, I trust you with our backs. If you can peel your eyes from Hastos' butt."
When the light fills the narrow passageway (currently the fork on the right) Merkas spots a trip wire, and several small holes strategically placed in the rock wall to look like parts of cracks and crags.
Kasi is quiet as she walks, the tension on her bow at half draw, and her eyes dart from left to right. Her grumbling has stopped at least. "Through passageway ahead. Go to wall and follow right. Then straight path to ladder."
Thanks to the light in the room, the tripwire can be stepped over. Since the traps are likely designed to keep people from getting in, rather than getting out, there's likely a switch or notch on the other side of the passageway to disable it temporarily without damaging it.
The party moved carefully, stepping lightly over the uneven stone floor. Merkas, ever eager and nimble, darted ahead alongside Kasi, the unlikely pair scouting for traps. Every so often, the kender would pause, his small hands hovering just above the ground or the cavern walls, his sharp eyes catching subtle shifts in the stone or the telltale glint of a hidden mechanism. Kasi muttered quiet affirmations as they find a trip wire.
Sera followed behind them, her sword’s glow casting long, flickering shadows against the cave walls. The blue fungus growing along the tunnel’s edges caught her eye, its eerie, bioluminescent glow giving the place an almost dreamlike beauty. She had never seen anything quite like it. Enchanted, perhaps? Or simply nature’s strange way of thriving in the dark? She made a mental note to ask Gero about it if they made it out of here. ( nature 1 )
Then her gaze shifted, and all thoughts of glowing fungi fled her mind.
Paladine help me…
Hastos was just ahead, his armor shifting slightly with each step, but her focus had settled elsewhere—lower, specifically. His movements were smooth, controlled, and despite the weight of his armor, his form remained… firm. His training was evident, each step measured and strong, and Sera found herself staring longer than she meant to.
A throat cleared.
Sharn.
“Sera...if you can peel your eyes from Hastos’ ass?”
Heat flooded her face instantly, her ears burning as if she’d been caught red-handed doing something far worse. She stiffened, her posture going rigid, and snapped her head forward as though she hadn’t been completely entranced just moments before.
“…I apologize,” she said hastily, mortified beyond reason. “It—it won’t happen again.”
Her father would scorn her lack of discipline. This was battle, not some tavern flirtation! Shaking off the embarrassment, she forced herself to focus ahead, determined not to slip up again.
At Sharns comment, Hastos' measured steps faltered in their rhythm. He never looked back or said anything but clearly needed a moment to process what he had just heard.
A deep breath, and he was back to his regular pace. Proceeding in the direction Kasi was directing them In.
Hastos setps gingerly over the twine. But before his boot hits the ground just past it, he notices a pressure plate underneath a small rock. A trap within a trap. It can be walked around, but it's inconveniently where an intruder would likely step if they were stepping over the twine.
Looking up, you see that, hidden within the ceiling that looms much lower that the rest of the cavern is a false ceiling covered in dust. There's faintly visible writing on it in the Draconic alphabet.
Kasi reads it to herself softly in Yip-yak and grins, amused. "That funny." She whispers to herself.
Kasi looks to Hastos. "It not translate good. Two words sound same, not mean same make funny. And sound in Yip-yap make funny sound. Like when bang head on steel wall. And look!" she says, trying not to make her voice to loud as she points at the steel plate. "It steel door! Bonk!" She covers her mouth to hold back the laughter, and says the phrase in Yip-Yak, and you literally hear the word "bonk" in it.
Hastos looks down at Kasi. Her amusement made him smile even if he wasn’t getting the joke. But he quietly points out the trap to everyone else so they can avoid it and moves forward, keeping as keen an eye out for traps as he can.
Holding back a full on guffaw at Sharn calling out Seras faux pas, he almost succeeds except for a wad of snot the strings out of his nose, which he promptly wipes on his sleeve and moves up to the trap Hastos nearly triggered.
Watching how much Kasi is enjoying the play on words Merkas smiles along but after a bit he quiets down and gets serious "That is funny Gramma, you think there are many more traps like that? Or will they be all different?" Following the others, the kender starts wishing he could see better in the dark but knows that having a bright light down here is a great way to announce your presence even if you're being very quiet, walking along with with these thoughts there is soon a second blue tinged kender walking along beside. This one is glowing faintly and sheds a small amount of dim light. (Cast Dancing Lights in Humanoid Shape) "uh? Hi?" The two wave at each other as if they are twin reflections of a mirror"You here to help me see? Guess Yvana is still looking out for me. Well let's go then" Merkas and his light twin move through the caves together, watching for any other strange rocks, switches, wires and such.
