I believe our DM made a few modifications, but it's been fun to play. We've also been playing the board game scenarios at the appropriate places in the narrative.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Boff's common tongue and the rest of the characters' common tongue originated on different game worlds.
How I see that unfolding during play ...
Upon their entry to Ravenloft, Alaric, Gooterat and Rats found that the common tongue of the Forgotten Realms, Thorasta, is spoken somewhat differently and is called Vaasi here.
Upon his entry to Ravenloft, Boff will eventually discover that his Krynn-based common tongue is spoken in these lands as well ... as a language called Falkovnian.
For the purposes of not making the game overly-complicated (or worse ... not fun), let's just say that when these outlander characters (Alaric, Boff, Gooterat, and Rats) speak to one another ... they can make themselves known without issue.
Between the folks with different homeworlds, accents and what-not will be strong, but the characters will always be able to convey their meaning.
Forgotten Realms common and Dragonlance common will share enough in — well — common ... that these characters can hold a conversation without any undue mental gymnastics.
This deal extends between players and their characters only. Ravenloft natives speaking Vaasi do not share a tongue in common with Boff, just as Ravenloft natives speaking Falkovnian do not share a tongue in common with Alaric, Gooterat, or Rats. Through their gestures, body language, and tone ... the 'gist' of a communication can be inferred ... but it might not be perfect.
Sorry for the lack of posts y'all. My kid got pretty sick this past week. He's good now but I have some life catchup to do. I'll be able to post tomorrow after I read what's been happening.
Alaric, Boff, Gooterat, and Rats may level up. Reminder: We are using fixed hit point increases for this tale.
There is some daylight (and nuance) between gaining a level and taking a long rest. Gaining a level, for example, gains a hit die ... but notably ... does not regain any hit points. In other words, your hit point maximum increases due to gaining a level ... but your current level of hit points does not increase.
Example: A 1st fighter with 5 out of 10 hit points who levels up and adds the fixed amount (6 more hit points) to their hit point maximum, and will be will be a 2nd level fighter with 5 / 16 hit points.
The same is true with spells-per-day and other abilities that are reset by a long rest. If you have spend them, then gain a level, they are still spent after you gain that level. You, of course, gain new abilities, new spells, new spell slots, etc ... but gaining a level does not automatically reset all of your 'resets with a long rest' abilities.
I know this can be a bit confusing, so I have perused your sheets to see specifically what abilities we are talking about in this instance:
Gooterat has used one instance of Innate Sorcery.
Rats has used one 1st-level spell slot.
As Gooterat and Rats resume play as 2nd level characters, these abilities will remain spent.
Additionally, after gaining a level, this séance will also count as a short rest for the group. I have already set your sheets accordingly by clicking the short rest button for you.
If you guys would like to allocate any hit dice (including the one you just gained) during this short rest, just let me know.
New invocations: Mage armour and false life (max thp) on self at will. So Alaric will not be using his leather armour if anyone else wants it. Both invocations improve his survivability for melee combat
Then, during a long rest, characters regain all hit points and all spent hit dice.
^^ The amount of hit dice recovered during a long rest is a change between the 2014 and 2024 editions.
Under the 2014 rules, a character would only recover 1/2 of their spent hit dice during a long rest. The 2024 rules updated this to say that all hit dice would be recovered during a long rest.
Quick questions on leveling up. For a ranger, level 2 brings in two new languages. Which to me, is kinda silly in a narrative manner as how would he have learned two new languages trapped in a spooky manor. So if it's cool with you DM, I was going to go with Abyssal and Infernal and attribute these newly learned languages to some malevolent or michevious entity.
Maybe perhaps, Rats doesn't even know he knows these languages yet
Ah, sorry. I ignored your previous comment because Boff was at full health and I assumed he would continue to be after leveling up. But you're saying that even someone at full health will maintain the same current HP after leveling, creating a gap between the old and new HP max? If so, then yes Boff will use Hit Dice...

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
The removal was due to inactivity.
I thought I had mentioned the reason in the quoted post, but upon re-reading I realized that I did not specify the reason.
The player had been absent for two weeks from the IC and a PM sent a week ago to check in also went unanswered.
Feel free to narrate this sort of stuff in the IC without using dice.
No need, in other words to roll dice against one another.
Also ... Re: Languages

Understood. I wasn't going to prolong the obstacle, just hold it for long enough to establish Boff's foreignness.

^^ Totally. I think the language thing has been played well so far.
I wasn't hinting that things should be changed ... just letting all the players know where my head is at.

Real life always comes first. Thank you very much for the heads up.
Hey gang, I’ll be traveling without my laptop for the next three days.
I’ll be able to check in with my phone, but formatting and typing out large posts without a keyboard is a pain in the neck.
Once I get back I’ll be able to jump back into this on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.
Milestone reached!

After joining more my signature got out of hand so I am now a proud member of the extended signature club!! :)
Can we allocate a HD to fill up the new HP gained? If so, yes please.

^^ Yes. That is one of the things that happens during a short rest.
If folks need to heal during a short rest, they spend hit dice and they regain hit points.
Then, during a long rest, characters regain all hit points and all spent hit dice.

^^ Works for me.
Before we move on, are Alaric, Boff and Rats intend to spend any hit dice during the short rest?

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Yes. Gaining a level increases a character’s maximum hit points, but it does not add to the current total.
This post covered the topic a bit more in detail.
Yeah I did read through that, and I should have picked it up from your example. The fighter with 5/10 becomes 5/16, not 11/16.
