As luck would have it, a tall and lanky human with long, low hanging mustache enters the store. He has a wonderful white fur lined cloak covering well made wool robe with an intricate sash made of silk. He carries a staff of twisted hemlock and wears a big, politicians smile. Its the Mayor, Mayor Saargugi himself. In his free hand he carries a some rolled up parchment.
Mork, the shops owner leaves behind tye counter to give him a big hug/ handshake hearty welcome.
” Well hello there, Mayor. Your looking fine in your winter clothing, its still warm yet. Aren’t you roasting?”
” Heh, heh, tis warm, but not roasting yet. The winter spirits have assured me, three days and we’ll be snow bound. Which is why I have come. Please post this last week job listing. That buffoon of an elf was spreading talk all yesterday evening, getting people riled up and concerned. I sent Wendel down the road to check on the O’Mallery family just in case. He came runnin back with his tail in-between his legs. He was fearful of even turnin* down O’mallerys road. Said carts and wagons were sitting idle, no people or livestock in sight..all their goods were still loaded so it definitely wasn’t goblins or kobolds…i need a small group not scared of entanglement to go check out the farm and suss out whats going on.”
Pahua was pretty light in his feet under normal circumstances and could be downright speedy when properly motivated and now he was very motivated. In a flash he shouldered some farmer out of the way and had somehow wormed his way in between Mork and the Mayor. He pulled out his most sincere smile and turned it on the Mayor, who took a step back due to its intensity. Pahua quickly explained that four Adventurers - somehow he even managed to make the title sound capitalized - were available for immediate deployment, once proper terms were agreed upon. (Persuasion 15) Possibly it was because his trousers were thin but he felt the Mayor was not as impressed by his pitch as he should have been.
Caine walks over to Pahua and the Mayor, Greetings Mayor Saargugi, Caine raises his hand in greeting to shake the Mayor's hand, I am voter 152, good to see see you again. Karl (points to him) you remember him, the bear wrestler?, well he had the brilliant idea that we were just discussing to head west. Mr. Pahua who is a very very capable administration bureaucrat was also wanting to join but felt he should negotiate the cost of our expenses. After all it will snow in 3 days like you said and when we find out what happened, freezing to death would not assist your cause. I believe Mr. Pahua has all of us voters and the city best interest at heart.

The mayor, at first startled but quickly recovering greets you warmly. “ well , great news to find a group so quickly with so few available. The quest should be pretty straightforward. Head west to the O’Mallery farm to discover what is going on. The town will pay 250gp for a survey and information on the whereabouts of any missing people. If there is a nefarious force at work, we will pay 1000gp to eradicate that threat. Try and preserve evidence if possible. Time of course is of the essence.”

Garrin stood a few paces back from the commotion near the counter, his attention half on the group and half on the worn supply list he’d been mentally rehearsing since dawn. He moved methodically through the narrow aisles, a bundle of tinder twigs here, a flask of oil there, his practiced eye scanning for anything overlooked. The floorboards creaked under his boots as he paused near the rack of winter gear, testing the seams of a pair of thick gloves before setting them into his satchel. Pahua’s voice carried easily through the din, bright and eager, the bard’s tone full of the optimism that Garrin found both admirable and slightly dangerous. From his corner, Garrin caught sight of the Mayor’s arrival, all silk sash and polished grin, and exhaled slowly through his nose. The man’s kind always spoke with warmth that froze over the moment gold came into the conversation. As the others gathered near the counter, Garrin crouched near a crate of rations, inspecting the salted meat inside. “Too dry,” he muttered under his breath, tossing one piece aside before selecting a smaller, better-preserved portion.
When he straightened again, the room had fallen into that brief hush of expectation, the kind that follows an offer of coin. He listened, quiet but attentive, as Mayor Saargugi laid out the job, his words all business wrapped in goodwill. 250 for scouting, a thousand for danger, Garrin thought, glancing toward the mayor’s clean hands and well-oiled staff. A small price for answers the town’s too frightened to find themselves. He didn’t interrupt or join in the bargaining; Pahua and Caine were handling that dance well enough. Instead, he continued packing his supplies: a new whetstone, a length of cord, an extra pouch of trail bread. His motions were steady, precise. When the parchment changed hands, Garrin finally approached, not to haggle or grandstand, but simply to slide his coin across the counter for his goods. His gray-blue eyes met the Mayor’s just long enough to speak evenly,“Seems we’ve our heading, then. I’ll be ready by noon.” He tucked the folded parchment into his cloak and looked to the others, Karl’s broad grin, Caine’s calm, and Pahua’s spark of satisfaction, before adding quietly, mostly to himself. “Let’s just hope we’re the ones coming back to turn it in.”

Not much but more than what I have and enough for a comfortable winter, thinks Pahua. Besides, there will likely be some goodies to pick-up that don’t need to be accounted for. To the Mayor and companions, he says, We ride at high noon! and then breaks into a well-known lively lute solo that gets the crowd jumping on their feet.
Assuming there is one hour until noon, he then finds a quiet spot to cast Find Familiar and burn incense to bring forth an Owl. If there is more than one hour, he will start a betting pool on the party's success. He will downplay some of their abilities, such as saying the "bear" Karl was bragging about was actually an overstimulated squirrel and so forth (Deception 24), and taking odds better than 2-1. He leaves 35gp with the bartender and encourages him to keep good count of the wagers. Eeks, only one solitary gold piece left! This had better work.
The noon sun slightly warms the air, barely cutting through the dense clouds here and there as you set out down the road. Within 10 mins or so you begin to see evidence. A pair of boots standing the road, like the person wearing them simply vanished. A little further brings you to a handcart which ha# some pots and pans and some random clothing. Looks lije it has been rummaged through, contrary to earlier reports. Likely somebody has started to take advantage of the situation already.
further up the road you find a full wagon, loaded down with crates and farming implements. No horses, but all the hitching gear is intact as if the animals were still present, except on the ground.
[[ sorry; got a bit busy; will need to reread up on what's going on and post something more flavorful; obviously he's down for the quest; if we're tracking missing people are there perhaps any dogs we could borrow or rent from someone? possibly a hunting dog? and get some clothing with the missing people's scent to aid in our survey ]]
Garrin slowed his horse's stride as the cart came into view, the air around him carrying that still, wary tension that always precedes something unnatural. The road was quiet save for the soft clink of his armor as he dismounted. He crouched beside the boots first, untouched, upright in the mud like they were still waiting for feet to fill them. His jaw tightened.“No drag marks. No scuffle.” His tone was low, almost to himself. “Whoever wore these…didn’t walk away.” He walked over scanning the line of ruts leading up to the next wagon. The wheel grooves cut deep into the muck, but there were no tracks, no horses, no people, nothing. Then, with a slow exhale, he lifted one hand and traced a short, deliberate pattern in the air, a practiced sigil etched in pale blue light. The runes on his glaive responded instantly, flaring to life as he spoke under his breath. “Revelare arcana.” A ripple of faint azure energy rolled outward from him as he cast Detect Magic. The world around him dulled slightly as the spell sharpened his vision, the ordinary fading just enough to let the arcane bleed through. He swept the area slowly, eyes narrowing as he paced between the abandoned gear and the wagon. “Let’s see if the elf’s tale had more truth than mead in it…” The glow of his glaive’s runes reflected in his eyes as he scanned the hitching gear and the crates, looking for anything that could give them all more clues about what happened here.

Your detect magic reveals a subtle green haze Covering the wagon, along with a sort of rotten smell, a ting of sulphur. You follow the haze and scent to a spot where its seems the strongest. Between the crates you find a crudely made, black ceramic urn shaped bowl. The clay seems to have bones fragments and hair mixed in. It glows brighter green and you feel strongly the residue of Necromancy.
