The bugbear bears its teeth and growls all the louder, raising Gundren a little more, the dagger still at his vulnerable throat. The creature does not appear to be intimidated. In response, the wolf's ruff rises on its neck, and it lowers its head a little, its own growl joining in with the bugbear's. "I don't like your tone," Grol says. "Leave. I'll not warn you again."
Nif looks at the bugbear and in a soothing voice says, "Hey we are all friends here. How about you let our friend go and we can talk about it in a civilised fashion."
(OOC: James How quickly can Karl get to the Bugbear Chief. Is there something in RAW that I'm unaware of that would allow Bugbear Chief to actually kill Gundren before Karl can get there?)
Karl is 15 feet away from the bugbear, so it would take Karl less than six seconds to walk to him. Gundren (as far as you can hope and assume) is alive, but unconscious. RAW say if you attack a creature that is unconscious, you roll an attack as usual, but any damage is an automatic crit. Also, any damage counts as two death save fails if it isn't enough to kill them outright. As Gundren is an NPC and not an adventurer, you can assume he has much lower HP than you do. You can also assume that the bugbear has readied an attack, which will take effect when certain criteria is fulfilled.
Something to keep in mind is that the more you all breeze through this campaign, the harder I've made parts of it with the hopes that I can finally present to you a challenge. RAW are sometimes ignored in favor of difficulty.
(Not sure if we've necessarily been breezing through things yet. Vondal nearly died that cultist fight, assuming it was unaugmented. Same I want to say goes for the Hobs, only slightly less so. Things certainly did sketchy though! XD)
Hearing no change to suggest the the bugbear's mood has changed for the better after Nif's attempts, Vondal curtly whispers in -dwarvish-, "I still have one trick. But, I'd need a moment to prepare before I step into view for it. Think you all can politely stall him for just a moment more?"He requests, before briskly adding, "I don't know if it'll work, mind you. But, it should provide brief opening.. if it does. If not-..." He bows his head, knowing Karl and the rest understood well the unspoken thought.
So, depending on the response, while he yet wasn't in direct line of sight of the bugbear, he stepped back into the other room to ready a certain spell out of easy ear shot/view of the bugbear, before striding back into place releasing the spell upon him.
(Oi now. He /did/ tell them, and Adrom didn't passed it along or anything. He just ran off. T.T)
Vondal shrugs at first, before finally quickly whispering in dwarvish,"Distract with maybe proposing trade. Assistance against Druids maybe in exchange for our dwarven friend. I dunno. You three should have it. Maybe have a lead in of a joke, I dunno."

"Now listen 'ere I'm wonderin if the plant lovers 'ave been givin' you and yours a bit o' trouble. They certainly did when we was walkin' 'ere. Now I ain't" brandishing Hew "a friend of plants and plant lovers and I'm guessin' you ain't either. Any chance we can come to some sort of agreement like about what to do about them?"Karl asks.
With one swift movement, Grol draws the dagger across Gundren's neck. There is a spurt of blood half way to Karl's feet. As the bugbear drops the dwarf, he screams, "I said get out!"
“Now I’m cranky” Karl says as he flings his shield aside - there is a groan as the goblin tied to the front of it face plants into the wall and charges - entering a rage - the bugbear recklessly swinging Hew two handed with all his might Attack: 22 Damage: 10
Seeing that the bugbear slilts Gundren's neck, the cleric screams in rage and another spiritual weapon, similar to those that he has used both against the dragon and the hobgoblins, appears above the bugbear and tries to smash the creature's head.
Ignoring the result of the attack and his own safety, Adrom runs towards Gundren, and touches him, asking Moradin to keep his soul within his body, so he can heal him later.
Vondal had hardly traded bow for crystal to help guide his intended spell before things simply pop off in rapid succession. And wide-eyed, he watched as Adrom and Karl rushed into the room, before the full gravity of things sink into place in mind. Cursing his hesitation, the hill dwarf promptly motion Nif on to move if the other dwarf hadn't already, before rushing into the doorway himself.
Though taken aback for a moment by the clearer view, his gaze snaps back to the wolf, and in the next, he forms a circle with thumb and index fingers and blows through the circle, conjuring a bolt of fire to slam into the wolf.

Nif curses as the bugbear slices his dagger and darts towards the bugbear, drawing his sword and dagger with gritted teeth. He positions himself between the downed Gundren and Adrom, attacking the bugbear.

Round 1: Players
The four dwarves file into the room even as Gundren's limp form, now gushing blood from the throat, has come to rest at the roaring bugbear's feet (Y5). Karl marches into the room, making a beeline for Grol while discarding his goblin-laden shield (move to Y6). He swings his axe, completely surprising the bugbear who is used to being having his orders followed. The axe cuts across the bugbear's chain shirt, but is still able to do some damage. Adrom follows along behind the tall dwarf (move to X5), calling forth his spiritual weapon as he moves. The spectral hammer drops down on the bugbear's shoulder, also harming him despite his armor. At the last, he reaches down and touches the prone form of Gundren. As Moradin answers his prayer, the bleeding immediately stops, and the cleric can see the unconscious dwarf is breathing normally. Vondal follows next, moving 10 feet into the room (move to X7) and casting a fiery dart at the growling wolf. The flung flame flares as it hits the canine, and the creature yelps in pain as much of its fur is burnt off, turning its flesh bright red and filling the room with a horrible smell. Nif, encouraged by Vondal to get a move on, moves into melee range, straddling the unconscious form to Gundren (move to Y5). He swings both of his blades, but neither is able to penetrate the creature's armor.
DM rollz: 13
During all of this, quickly following Karl's attack on Grol, a spectral scythe appears near Karl and swings at the dwarf. (Attack: 15 Damage: 10 force damage) The barbarian feels the blade cut down his back, catching him by surprise, but his rage lessens the impact.
Round 1: Baddies
The bugbear drops his dagger and draws a nasty-looking morningstar. He swings once at Karl, and since Nif has presented himself within range as well, he swings once at the rogue too. (Karl Attack: 23 Damage: 13 piercing damage; Nif Attack: 15 Damage: 16 piercing damage) Karl, distracted by the unseen attack, is unable to dodge the attack while Nif just ducks under the swing aimed at him. The wolf, looking fairly grotesque and perhaps now driven mad by its injuries, lunges at Vondal. (Attack: 11 Damage: 7 piercing; DC11 STR save: 20) The canine is able to knock Vondal onto his back (prone) while successfully biting down on his arm.
OOC: My last edits to the above post are not showing now, so I'm starting a new post. There may end up being duplicated information.
The wolf is able to knock Vondal to floor as it successfully bites down on one of his arms.
A previously unseen individual — an elf with dark skin and red hair — suddenly appears behind Adrom. She reaches out and touches the cleric with her free hand (the other is holding a shield). (Attack: 17 Damage: 19 necrotic damage) He can tell she attempted to cast a spell on him, but his armor keeps whatever it was from affecting him. However, at the same time, she makes a little nod, and the spectral scythe swings again at Karl. (Attack: 27 Damage: 11 force damage) The weapon makes contact, but the barbarian's rage keeps the damage to a minimum.
Round 3: Players - Vondal is prone; I hope everyone is keeping up with their character sheets
Vondal outcry of pain turns into a grunt upon hitting the ground. If yet able to struggle free, the hill dwarf breaks out the axe to shove the wolf back that much further, while using the opening to find solid footing once more, if only for the moment. Despite the mess of a wolf before him, spying the Dark skinned Drow in the corner of his eyes, Vondal expression twists into a mask of anger.
"You should've stayed in the deep -- Take Care With that one, Adrom. And away with you beast!" He'd demand, swinging with one hand as the other still clutched the crystal, then following up with a kick to either wolf skull or bugbear shin, if the former fell to the blade.
Though if the wolf held him down to the ground, he instead would work one last spell, forming spectral darts for him to fling into its face. Albeit, one 'stray' dart would bound off walls and miraculously strike Grol in such an event.
Movement: Spend 1/2 to Stand Up.
Action: Attack Using Vonsorm. (Lethal, One-Handed) Battleaxe - Attack: 24 Damage: 17 slashing at remaining Wolf.
Bonus Action: Rolling Thunder! (Lethal) Unarmed Strike - Attack: 16 Damage: 4 of bludgeoning at Wolf. (if Wolf is dead, if then able to move to 4-Y to attack Grol.)
Movement(Remaining): To 8-W.
OR if standing up is not possible.
Action: Cast (1st level)Magic Missile, ifor 5 sending 2 dart to Wolf and 1 dart at Grol. Wolf Total: 10. Grol Total: 5.

(OOC: Karl is raging which means that anybody being attacked by Grol - his current target - has resistance and Grol has disadvantage)
Was Karl hit three times (twice by the Spectral scythe) or only twice (once by the spectral scythe). He takes full damage from the scythe as it does Force damage.
Having had the wind knocked out of him by the force from the spectral scythe Karl gets ready to dodge the next blow (14) and promptly feels stronger in himself.
