Looking very relieved to have so quickly found the gnome Gargan waves off the offer of a chair before he replies: “We have seen off three of the scarecrows, some sort of magical constructs that we have recovered for further investigation.” He pauses for a moment and lets out a deep sigh before continuing: “But alas we have lost one of our number and suffered wounds of our own in the course of the battle. The others are outside but we seek aid urgently, I presume that we must contact the city for help with our noble friend who fell this night? But if you have water and beds we might use in the meantime we would be most grateful.”
He is initially excited but his face drops as you finish speaking. "Well it's great news you've dealt with our scarecrow problem but to know that it was at the expense of your friend is saddening. There is little I can do for him but I can try to help you. I have 5 rooms here and you are welcome to them. If there's anything I can provide to assist you just let me know. As for contacting the city there is probably nothing you can do tonight. They aren't in the habit of letting people through the gates without intervention from the the Open Lord or City Watch, and even they would not do so without a compelling reason."
Knowing it would not be much longer until Cloudfur would need to change back. Dori simply scoops up Sizan and the scarecrows in his arms. (Carrying capacity 540lbs)
While strength may allow it I would suggest the logistics of trying to carry 4 humanoids is probably beyond even you. At best you could take 2. When you try to bring them inside the gnome says politely, “Well I’m appreciative of your actions and, though a bit weird, we can keep your list friend in here I think it would be best to leave the scarecrow carcasses outside, if that’s alright?”
He takes you up and opens several rooms for you. “Ehrm.. as to our lost fellow here.. perhaps he would be better off in the cellar? It’s quite cool down there..”
Dori grabs the three scarecrows, tossing them in a pile out back, but carefully carries Sizan. "I will stay in the cellar as well, if that's alright. I can pay standard room cost as necessary.
After Dori removes the bodies from his back, the horse will shiver and turn back in to a battered tabaxi. Cloudfur will head inside and curl up on the floor by the fire.
Before the others retire to get rest and recover Gargan would speak with them: “Friends I have had another thought. I agree with Cloudfur, we should contact the Harper’s for they may wish to help one of their own. And if the Emerald enclave may help then I would be grateful to you for trying Cloudfur. But there may be another avenue. When we returned from the sewers with Raener he took us to a temple to help Dori. In that temple they have the power to heal. Raener’s friend, Savra I believe, told us to return to them if we wished to help. Perhaps we can seek aid for Sizan in return for helping them? I feel it is an avenue worth pursuing at least, do you agree?”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: Hopefully I’m remembering the names correctly here, but that’s not Gargan fault that’s mine!
Gargan
”Agreed friends. I will gladly write to Mirt at the Harper’s and Savra at the Halls of justice but I feel you should be the one to write to the enclave friend?”
With that Gargan would write to Savra at the halls of justice beseech is them for aid and offering our services as repayment for any aid they might be able to provide, letting them know that they will be re-entering the city in the morning and also taking care to talk about the events surrounding Sizans death in service to the people of undercliff. If Cloudfur wants him to write to Mirt he would take another paperbird and do the same to Mirt and the Harper’s.
After this Gargan would go to the constructs, unable to sleep this night and only able to get a short rest himself as guilt and responsibility weigh on him and he struggles to deal with such alien emotions. Instead he would spend his time investigating the remains of the scarecrows to see if there is anything he might be able to learn from them, both mundane and arcane.
The tabaxi hands one of his paper birds to Gargan "for the Harpers..." he will then take his last one and write a note to Melannor Fellbranch explaining the scarecrow problem has been resolved but unfortunately at the cost of one of his companions. He asks if perhaps there is anything the Enclave can do to restore their friend. He also explains they are staying the night at the Bard & Bull and will return to Waterdeep in the morning after they have rested and tended to their own injuries.
You complete and send notes to the Mirt, Savra and Melannor, watching the rather mysterious paper birds fly off into the twilight, up towards towards the city. With the darkness fully taken hold, the sight of Waterdeep from the outside is actually rather remarkable. You can see a few lights littering the landscape in places where buildings or land extend beyond the height of the walls. Smoke from thousands of fireplaces billows out in numerous stacks, rising up into the sky. A faint glow emanates from the skyline - a combination of all the lamps both in and outside across the city. The glow is just enough to be able to see a handful of the gryphons and their riders who patrol the skies above.
Gargan - outside you take a closer look at the scarecrows trying to garner any information you can. They are (or were) certainly magical constructs, the energy of which has completely left their form as a result of the damage inflicted. If you hadn't been fighting them yourself earlier, they would look no different to you than 3 real scarecrows that had been taken from their perch in some farmer's field. In fact you surmise that's probably exactly what happened. Unfortunately you are unable to discover anything about them that would reveal their origin.
You all retire to your rooms, and Dori remains in the cellar with Sizan's body. Sleep comes slowly and is restless as you recount the events of the day and ponder what may happen next. It does eventually find each of you. (And so you all complete a long rest).
In the morning you are greeted downstairs by the same gnome (who's name you learn is Flannie). He provides you with some warm food and light conversation. There are only two others in the room, quietly consuming their own food and drink. In the middle of this you are interrupted when the front door opens, in which walks two armored and cloaked individuals. Their breastplates bear the familiar symbol of a silver gauntlet. They approach you, clearly aware of who they are looking for.
He addresses your group: "We are here to offer assistance. Seems you have some influential friends. Should you desire it, we are here to offer transportation back to the temple in the city - I understand there is an urgent need."
Dori was hesitant to leave Sizan alone in the cellar come morning, but eventually found his way upstairs to enjoy the food and conversations of the others. Currently, the goliath had little to offer himself. Dealing with the scarecrows wasn't over, Sizan needed help outside their means, and the inn was left in the hands of Lif..
When the guards entered, Dori couldn't believe their luck. "I would be in your debt if you are truly able to help us and our friend.
Feeling bright eyed and bushy tailed (at least compared to last night) Cloudfur is surprised to see the two individuals. Out of the three paper birds they sent, he expected to hear from the Harpers or the Enclave first.
"Our friend lies in repose downstairs, Dori here stood vigil over him during the night. Any assistance you could provide will be most welcome I am sure."
Cloudfur will thank Flannie for his hospitality, and will press 4 dragons in to his hand as they shake.
You retrieve Sizan's body from the cellar and step outside to see a scene that likely this village seldom has - two full size Gryphons sit in the street outside the tavern. The knight says to you "We should be able to take the 4 of you, and your friend, but that is likely the most we can carry." He nods his head towards the scarecrow pile, "Those will have to stay here. We can come back for them if the Watch decides they would be valuable".
He works with the 3 of you to tie Sizan to the back of one of the huge creatures, and you all mount up. What follows is an event few have experienced - including yourselves. The Gryphons flap their mighty wings, lifting off against the ground and into the air. You climb into the air in a large circle and soar up towards the city. If you thought it was cold on the ground, forget it. Up this high and at this speed you are bloody frozen - the only saving grace being the warmth of each other and the creature beneath you.
It's a clear day and the sun is still low in the morning sky. You fly up over the city walls, at which time you have quite a breathtaking view of the entire city. Though this may be just all in a day's work for your newfound comrades, but for all of you it is an experience you will not soon forget.
You fly over the city towards Mount Waterdeep, over the castle ward, and descend into the courtyard at the Temple of Tyr where the two creatures land just as softly as they took off. You each disembark from their backs, removing the rope from Sizan's body and lifting him down to the ground. As you do so, Savra enters the courtyard accompanied by Renaer and Melannor. She acknowledge's you with a glance and a nod and quickly communes with the two knights. After a quick discussion they mount up and take flight, heading out to resume their patrol.
Savra turns to you "I received your note - as did Melannor here. Mirt did also but was indisposed this morning and sends his regrets. While we are happy to hear you have dealt with this threat we are obviously saddened at the loss of your friend. We thought an air transport would be the most efficient to get you back here quickly to give us the best chance at returning Sizan's spirit to his body. We certainly can try to help, but there are no guarantees - it is not always possible to bring someone back to life. The Harpers, the Enclave and Renaer here have instructed us to proceed at their cost - you are fortunate to have such friends. Shall we proceed?"
At the sight of the entourage awaiting them in the Temple he is mildly surprised, he did not expect to get this much acknowledgement for their missives. Upon seeing Melannor, he will go up and report in to him.
"The scarecrow situation in Undercliff has been taken care of. They appear to have been created magical constructs of some sort, so I believe there is someone or something still out there, and could possibly create more. We had to leave the corpses behind, but should the Enclave wish to inspect them more you should not have a problem finding them outside the Bard n Bull tavern. We appreciate the importance you seem to have placed upon us, however misguided I believe it to be."
He will then reach over and shake Renaer's hand "and to you m'lord, you have already given us more than we deserve in regards to the restoration of our manor but thank you once again"
and lastly to Savra "May the heavenly light of your god shine upon us this day, and may our friend Sizan's spirit not had a chance to meet Lord Kelemvor himself yet. Hopefully we are not too late."
Renaer replies "Well we look out for our own. Sizan has been a Harper for some time, notwithstanding the recent deeds all of you have done. Generosity and reciprocation does have limits mind you - rituals like this are complex, expensive, and prone to failure. I do not recommend making this a regular occurrence. There is also an expectation of continued service - we definitely don't go around resurrecting people to have them retire or run off with another faction." His tone is decidedly more serious and you get the distinct impression that this is more .. business .. than it was last time you met.
You are led to a chamber where two clerics are setting up the necessary materials for the spell. Sizan's body is taken and laid in the center of the room. One of them comes back, "On a good day this spell works around half the time. It will help for familiar individuals to participate and bring to it whatever you can through words, actions or objects. The spirit must be willing to return, and these things may aid in that. You may do so any time once the casting of the spell starts. It requires an hour to complete".
With that the cleric turns back towards Sizan and begins writing the glyphs and reciting the incantations of the Raise Dead spell.
(Whatever you want to do to aid in the ritual, do so now).
Dori stands as close to Sizan as allowed while the ritual begins. His eyes closed and arms hanging freely at his side. "Your business in life is not finished, friend. You were taken from this plane far too early and we are here to help bring you back. On your return you will owe us nothing but your continued dedication and we will be grateful for such.
Gargan watches over the ritual for a time, mulling his thoughts over carefully and listening as the others chime in to say something. After around fifteen minutes or so he decides to speak up.
"Sizan. Yazara. You were a man of many secrets, a man of many names. In the time we have had to get to know you we have seen enough of your actions to know the kind of man you are. You trusted us with some of those secrets, with some of those names. You fought besides us, stood at our side as we battled for our lives and for the sake of others. When you fell you had proven yourself an honourable man. I speak the truth when I say that you are my friend."
He pauses and lifts his staff up in one hand, holding it over Sizan's body. He then begins to channel some of his sorcerous power through it and into the clear white crystal at it's tip, as he does so the crystal begins to turn black as if it is being filled with ink. He then looks down at Sizan and continues, uncaring of any looks he might receive as he speaks.
"Let my power act as a beacon for your spirit. See me standing here friend, seeking to repay the debt I owe you for your trust and for your actions. Know this, you are not the only one who carries secrets. You are not the only one with many names. You have played a part in showing me the path to deal with the turmoil within me, you have given me the key to unravelling my own secrets. For this I am truly thankful. Let me treat you in kind and share with you one of my own secrets."
With this he leans down to Sizan's ear and closes his eyes, pausing for a long moment. When he finally opens his eyes they are as pits of darkness, black as deepest night. When he speaks he says only one word. It is but a whisper, barely audible. And yet some how the power of it echoes around the chamber and lingers in the air for a long moment, slowly fading into nothing. He opens his mouth and says in Draconic "Gargyrilaxx....."
