It seems that "nschrock" applied as well. I've been in a different game with him for a long time (year+) and he's reliably active. Not super long posts, but not one-liners either. He usually posts at around the same time he did today - European morning time-ish.
Conceptually I like the deep gnome celestial warlock the best - it's just such a cool idea. The motivation is very clear and easy to align with.
On the other side I would leave out the artificer - it just won't function without resupply of materials and doesn't really fill a slot/role we could use either. Same with the hexblade warlock - people seem to love that subclass, but I haven't seen it live up to the hype. Also it doesn't seem to be a natural fit with the group that we have.
That leaves paladins and clerics and I don't have a preference there as long as they have darkvision.
If you like the deep gnome celestial warlock, then no harm with going with that. As long as their back story works for why they would stick to our motley group.
(I just realized that Beegred is the only one left from the initial prison break, although I guess not all of the others died violently.)
If not the warlock, I'd have a tough time picking from among the paladin/cleric dwarf/deep gnome options.
(I noticed that Tesservert also had a deep gnome arcana cleric suggestion in post #2, in case that makes any difference.)

DarthDrizzt/Human-Hexblade Warlock (I've done the surface raiding party lost in the underdark already.)
Dreak/Deep Gnome-Celestial Warlock
Grakus13/Dwarf-Forge Cleric of Moradin (Joined 2017, has 4 total posts)
Great-Axeblade/Dwarf-Paladin
Secretfool/Deep Gnome-Light domain Cleric
Oberon99/Deep Gnome-Artificer Sage (Rodolfo makes a good point about provisions and supplies. Artificer would have a hard time)
Burl/?-Cleric (Compared to the other applications, his was less detailed and he hasn't followed up since his initial post)
That leaves us with:
nshrock/Deep Gnome-Nature Cleric
Tesservet/Deep Gnome-Vengeance Paladin
Dreak/Deep Gnome-Celestial Warlock
Great-Axeblade/Dwarf-Paladin
Secretfool/Deep Gnome-Light domain Cleric
So assuming we choose between the Celestial Warlock and one other, what do you want the other to be? A strong tank and damage dealer with light healing ability (Paladin)? Or strong healing ability, great utility, average tanking and light on damage (Cleric)?
So assuming we choose between the Celestial Warlock and one other, what do you want the other to be? A strong tank and damage dealer with light healing ability (Paladin)? Or strong healing ability, great utility, average tanking and light on damage (Cleric)?
(EDIT: I misread your post. I thought you were talking about recruiting two players, when it sounds like you are narrowing the choices down to two.)
Since Skameros and Rodolfo came in together (as part of that mercenary group), maybe the two newcomers should both be deep gnomes who are acquaintances. That would remove the dwarf-paladin, and leave a trio of deep gnomes: paladin and two clerics (nature and light). (Unless you like the idea of an "Odd Couple" with a dwarf and a deep gnome.)
I don't have any strong preferences. I'd be willing to take a chance on any of the contestants. I'll make a few random comments, in case that helps with your decision.
Secretfool only has 178 posts total for the past year, so not an extensive background. (A lot of the recent posts seem to be a battle arena or applying to recruiting threads.) But maybe they just need someone to give them a chance to join a steady campaign? And Light Cleric could have some overlap with the Celestial Warlock for their backgrounds.
Tesservett has 504 posts in half a year, so that shows activity. Seems to be in two other campaigns at the moment, so that is manageable. I'm not sure why they want a background involving lycanthropy, but... whatever. If the paladin is part of the Blingdenstone militia, maybe the gnomes want an ambassador to the upper world to ask for more aid? That would explain why the character would be working with the party, both short term and after leaving Blingdenstone.
nshrock has the most "experience" (almost 5K posts in less than 3 years). But also seems to be in a lot of campaigns, so if they aren't selected, won't be hurting for game play. The bio for the Nature Cleric mentions the "Mushroom Prince", so with the horrible events that happened in the myconid village, that is a convenient story hook.
I just noticed that Great-Axeblade (the dwarf paladin) and Tesservett are part of the same campaign "Assault on the Crimson Fleet". (Great-Axeblade is the DM.) Impressive that they are up to 75 pages in 1 month. (I was pushing the players in my campaign pretty hard, and it didn't get to 75 pages until 4 months.) That amount of activity scares me a little bit. :-)

Anything I should be aware of or avoid for character creation beyond what you've already mentioned?
What level should I start at? Looked like the group was almost all 5, but wanted to verify. Are Tasha's custom origin/class features valid? What should I do for equipment?
You've already defined race and class. Make your character using Point Buy.
Due to the nature of the module, and your backstory stating you've escaped captivity from the Duergar, you should be very light on equipment. Your book, a simple weapon, a few days of rations. Maybe a backpack and a couple of trinkets. Coin is not worth a whole lot, but you can have one gem worth 100 gold.
I will review any Tasha's custom origins or class features on a case by case basis.
As for XP, I think I am going to draw the line here and switch to Milestone leveling. Once the party is done with their current task, they will all be level 5 and will all level in tandem. So make a level 5 character.
Howdy everyone, thanks for inviting me to join you.
@DM - I liked the bond and feature we discussed, so I added both, although I just added the feature to my character notes insread of making a custom background for simplicity’s sake.
Sounds like it’s going to be a bit before my character is introduced, so I’ll just be along for the ride for a bit. Looking forward to jumping in
We got sent to a mission and it's been a while.. I'd want to say a few months. Not a complicated area, but very dangerous. We took a lot of time to look around and clear some of it for safety and are now seemingly nearing completion of our main objective. We'll see :)
Thanks! And I saw your earlier assessment of my posting style 😂 very true, very fair. I’m working on how to make longer posts without resorting to just inner monologue. It’s a work in progress
I’ll find out what your mission was once it’s time for me to join
I see you took the Fey Touched feat. Having been born in the underdark and a slave your whole life, I would have to say that connection will come from your Patron via the book.
Yep, I had a similar thought. Happy to change feat/ASI if you think its too good as well (some of the Tasha's feats can verge on broken). I'd consider everything a work in process until you approve it and/or the character joins the campaign.
Ooh, celestial warlock sounds great too! The draw towards light is a brilliant (pun intended) motivational aspect of trying to get out from Underdark.

Well I went and buggered that one all up....hang on

@ Skameros: You can act. Beegred hasn't killed it.

I meant to choose one new character from:
That being said, we could choose two. If they are both active and frequent posters, it won't be a hindrance.
I've decided to choose two, to bring our party up to 5. If one goes MIA or leaves suddenly, I won't have to go recruiting right away again.
I will choose the celestial warlock (Dreak) and the nature cleric (nshrock). Both characters are interesting and fit in the storyline.
Sounds good
