As Keyleth inspects the alcove for traps she smells the rotten odor of gas through the edges of the hidden door. She also sees that edges of the door are made of flint and surmises that opening may create sparks.
"Maybe if we had some gear oil to put on the edges, then it wouldn't spark? Or maybe there's a way to disable whatever is holding the gas so that the sparks have nothing to ignite?" the fighter offers.
OoC: I was thinking we could just stand back and Dr. A could just use mage hand to trigger the explosion and burn off the gas before we go in. Suppose unseen servant would work too, but probably unnecessary?
OoC: Fair point. Ok, then we have: (1) Unseen Servant (can be far away, but takes 10 min.), (2) Water on the door (quick and easy, not guaranteed to work -- maybe there's a knowledge check that could let us predict whether it'd work?), (3) Everyone else backs up and Keyleth opens it with Resistance cast on her, hoping there's a DEX save and she can use evasion to avoid damage.
(Perhaps use your thieves' tools to disable the trap - if stop the main jet of gas from escaping, we may get a little flash but not a big explosion. Most traps have a way around them so the occupant can use the passage but interlopers (like us!) are deterred...)
There is no 'trap' that Keyleth can see. She sees that the edges of the door are flint and will spark and surmises the gas she smells is explosive. There is nothing to 'disarm' in a thieves tool sort of way.
You figure the water may or not work. It is hard to be sure.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"I don't really see any way to disarm this ignition mechanism," Keyleth says. "I think the water is worth a try. Who knows what's back there that might get destroyed if it gets triggered? May as well see if we can get in there with the room unexploded I guess?"
After securing Mystra's blessing from Dr. A. (presumably?) and gesturing for everyone else to back far away from the door, she splashes some water around the edges of the door, and then gingerly reaches to open it.
Keyleth pours the water on the edge of the door while the others back away. She readies herself to move out of the way as she pulls the door open. The plan almost works but the last tug of the door creates a spark and a burst of flame fills the area 15 feet away from the door. Keyleth, with uncanny speed, throws herself out of the way and is unharmed.
With the passage now cleared of the fumes you see an underground river. The water flows to the north. The water is about 3 feet deep and the ceiling 3 feet over the top of the water.
To the south is a small cavern.
Water pours from cracks and seams in the rough walls of this cavern, whose floor is a muddy pool that flushes out into the tunnel beyond. Just above the pool’s surface, a large treasure chest dangles from rusty chains embedded in the ceiling.
The chest is 6 feet long, 3 feet wide, 3 feet high, and suspended 1 foot above the surface of the water. A keyhole shaped like a cackling demon skull decorates the front of the lid. Encircling the keyhole, a tiny inscription in Common reads, “I devour all but the greatest thieves.”
The chest is locked and doesn’t appear to be trapped.
"Whoever made this clearly wants this to be seen as a challenge," Keyleth says with a half-smile after reading the inscription. "What's great about it is that even know I know full well it's trying to play on my ego, I'm tempted to try anyway. After all, just because it's manipulative doesn't mean there isn't something in there that might help us... On the other hand, seems likely the downside is greater than the upside..."
She stares off into space as though calculating odds...
"Ahbut we only learn by pushing the boundaries so go ahead young'un. Just give me time to stand clear?"Dr A says as he makes sure he is at least 30 feet from Timber.

"I don't think we want to open that one," she cautions. "Unless maybe someone has a way to do it without... being there?"

"What if we drench the flint, so it doesn't spark?" Timber suggests
"Ahbut we could step back 60 feet and i could summon a force .... (unseen servant) .... to open the door?" Dr A suggests

Mage hand only has a range of 30’ - not sure that’s outside the blast radius

"It's not a mimic, is it?" Kirinar asks while poking the side of the chest with his long yklwa...
Love God. Love Others. Any Questions?
Kirinar pokes the chest and it swings slightly on its chain but its a solid chest and not a mimic.
Timber looks around, "Do we cut the chest down? There might be something important inside!" his eyes glowing with curiosity
If no one in the party stops him, Timber will summon his shadow blade into his hand and cut the chains, alllowing the chest to fall to the ground.
"Ahbut we only learn by pushing the boundaries so go ahead young'un. Just give me time to stand clear?" Dr A says as he makes sure he is at least 30 feet from Timber.
