Barnaby is still looking around with his detect magic on. He will also study the windmill cameo to see if it means anything to him...
History: 13
And see if he can recognize the furry beast...
Nature: 11
The windmill cameo suggests a fine level of craftsmanship. This longsword is likely a family heirloom; you suspect it is quite old.
As you approach the furry little creature, it draws back further under the chair. Then it growls at you, and you realize what it is: a very small wolf cub. Likely the runt of a litter. Your detect magic - expiring soon - does not pick up anything new in this room, other than one notable feature: the wolf cub does not emanate any magic at all.
The creature eyes Fope suspiciously as he puts bits of grain on the floor.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ben, please roll animal handling for me. Føpé wants to keep it as a pet! Failing that, he'll try to get it out of the house. Also, he'll switch to some dried meat.

Edit, I am now rolling myself: 20
Using a bit of dried meat, you lure the cub out from under the chair. He comes to you and sniffs at your hand before accepting the offered treat. He appears to be quite hungry.
Here is how we're going to treat domesticating it: Once per long rest, you may take 30 minutes to attempt to teach it something. If you succeed on an Animal Handling check, you have succeeded for the day. You need a week of successes - 7 days of successful DC 10 checks - to finish instruction. Each new thing is subject to my approval, and must either (1) be really basic, or (2) build on something you've already taught him. I say "him," because it's a male, as you quickly determine.

The first thing you notice is that, after you all entered the room, the door softly closed behind you. The second thing you notice, as you examine the walls more closely, is that the sculpted designs on the wall include - among the nymphs and flowers and so on - subtly incorporated serpents and skulls.
The door that closed behind you? It opens back into the foyer room you just left. The room is as you left it. edit: In other words, it closed itself, but it did not lock.
Nothing to roll. At first glance it was a delicate, bucolic field populated with light and lovely figures. Now you see the serpents and skulls mixed in, but no story to read.
So folks, we have an abundance of doors to go through, and a stairs. Any one have a suggestion on which to open next? (If I'm reading the map correctly)
How about those nice double doors next to Barnaby?
That's the door back into the foyer. You just looked in there, because the door had closed itself, and you determined that the foyer was still there. :)
But you are reading the map correctly. There are many options.
Well the kiddos said the monster is in the basement. I say we split up into 2 teams on this floor and search for a barricaded door or hatch down to the basement. When one of us finds it, yell out and the rest of us will come find you.
I have read many books containing histories of heroic parties. One thing that I have noticed as a continuing theme is that when the party splits up, they inevitably die a gruesome death. With that in mind, perhaps we should stick together.
doh..ok, my bad..how about the single door next to it. Kif isn't a fan of splitting the party,
we should stick together, let's check these out... we're pretty close now, but I would hate to open several doors and find ourselves flanked by bad guys on several sides or get so separated and engaged that we can't help each other
It's a small closet. Black cloaks hang on hooks, and up above a black top hat sits on a shelf. The room is amply lit by the lamps from the larger main room.
Fope, unless you suggest otherwise, I will propose that you teach the wolf cub to come when called as its first lesson. You already have one successful Animal Handling check under your belt, but in order to complete this task you will need (1) 6 more successful checks, and (2) a name for your new friend. How else will you call him?
I was thinking name too, but for less utilitarian reasons. Føpé has a new puppy! The monster is completely forgotten as Føpé begins thinking about what to name the pup, scratching it behind the ears and sharing the love. Talks of splitting up the party to ensure certain death to all are ignored.
What color is it? How much does it weigh, approximately?
The first thing he will teach it is, We're your newpack.Hopefully this includes, We'll protect you. Stick with us. Does this first thing start tomorrow, or today? Or is this covered by the getting-to-know-you roll already made? Does Føpé need to spend half an hour with it to get this idea across?
Do the seven days need to be consecutive? If he fails his check one day, can he try again the next day? Will it take off? Or does Føpé just lose out on one of the seven things he can teach it? The probability of making 6 more consecutive checks successfully, DC 10 with +6 animal handling is (17/20)^6=38%.
Noting that the pup is hungry, Føpé offers it, from his rations, an amount of food appropriate for a hungry critter of its size.
Føpé names it Revenge, because it's a good name for a wolf, and Føpé hopes that this creature will play a roll in the quest.
If it was a baby then I would say growing up with the name ‘Revenge’ would likely give it a complex. But, as it’s a wolf and has no understanding of the common tongue, I suppose there could be worse names.
He is a tan pup, with a white chest. He's only about six pounds, so the ordinary wolf biology is a bit messed up (At that size, if it's even weaned, a real wolf would in the real world be eating regurgitated food. We aren't doing that.). He's the runt of the litter, and that's my explanation. And that this is a fantasy world.
I did not say that the checks have to be consecutive because they do not have to be consecutive. Successfully teaching something will mean that it no longer requires an Animal Handling roll to get it to do the thing. So if you want to spend the first week teaching it to recognize the other members of the party and to treat you as a pack, go for it. Sounds good.
As for the name of the pup, you can call him whatever you would like, though whether your party members believe that "Revenge" is a good name for a wolf is, of course, up to them.
I believe the monsters were said to be in the basement. Perhaps we should check the upstairs and work our way down to make sure that there is nothing at our backs.

Barnaby will back away quietly with thoughts of encouragement for Fope.

I wish I remembered that I'd had that inspiration.

Kif is going to try and open the door that just opened

Good, Kif feels better.
Look at all theses skulls and snakes on the walls, typical mid-century Barovian hogwash
Do the symbols look like anything grander, like a story or message? I'd roll something but not sure what

Kif opens the door near Fope, as suggested.

Shall we open another door Kif?
