Puddin can feel her mouth watering from the excellent smells of the food. My, what would I give to feast and dine on the fabulously wonderful feast this band has prepared. She hides with Barnaby and Kif in the brush off the side of the road. What would you folks say I disguise myself and then strike up a merry conversation? Maybe the old man will tell me what's he's up to while we munch on food.
Sure, you can roll History. Also please roll Insight and Arcana checks for me, please. So roll all three.
Puddin has that straight-ahead look at the arch, lit from behind by the spell. She also watches as, silhouetted against it, the lookout who had been stationed on your side of the campsite steps out from the woods and walks casually down the middle of the road. He doesn't appear to see you, and he doesn't appear to be armed.
Good question about Artificer's Lore. Here's what I'll do, so you don't have to worry about that in the future.
You can always roll it with your History checks, if you think it might apply. Just reveal the roll with a note that you've asked to apply it:
History: 12
+2 if magic, alchemical, or technological items.
Then I know that if the item is magical, alchemical, or technological, I should give you that extra +2 (because 2 is your proficiency, so you get an extra +2 because it's doubled). Does that make sense? That way I don't have to tell you if you're getting the benefit of it or not, and you can just roll it.
I'll try to remember to apply it even when you don't ask, if you are checking about something where that's appropriate. But you can always drop in that note on your History checks, and leave it up to me.
History: You can't tell anything about this shape. It's pretty crude, but not primitive in any way that suggests particular historical significance.
Insight: It's your sense that the archway is there to represent an open door for passersby. Possibly for you, in particular. It is possible that it's just there like a well-illuminated welcome mat.
Arcana: When it comes to the magic at work here, any initiate to the arcane arts could have done it. You are not looking at any kind of a magic portal or anything. It's just a backlit, clumsily constructed archway.
The lookout will be even with your position on the roadside, and the others' position in the woods, soon.
Barnaby has Tulip remain on her current perch, but recalls his sense within himself.
You're welcome to go talk to them Puddin, or we could all go together. It doesn't feel like we will learn much more by watching, and before long they might just turn in for the night and then we'll have no one to talk to. A little ***** dinner sounds like it would hit the spot about now.
With that Barnaby rubs his round belly and gazes longingly at the campfire and whatever might be roasting on it.
I literally just said that Barnaby recalls his senses back to himself. He got bored of nothing new happening. He can plug back in at some point. Tulip is remaining on her perch.
Edit: I suppose he came back after Puddin had made her statement, but perhaps we can presume that Barnaby asked for thoughts on moving forwards and she restated her offer.
Welcome back, Fope! I suppose that means you were watching the road. You see the lookout walking up the road in your direction. He doesn’t seem to see you. What do you do?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
How well hidden from the road is the bulk of the party?
Føpé, considering that the soldiers that ventured here seemed to have returned ensorceled, knowing that there is magic afoot, and in the context of the wisdom from his tribe's elder, is wondering if Puddin is under the effects of some magic. He'd like to consider his observations of her behavior in the context of her heretofore oddities.
Fope is watching the lookout walk up the path/road in your general direction.
Puddin said what she said and stepped out onto the path, toward the lookout and the campfire, leaving Fope alone.
Barnaby and Kif are nearby, but a bit deeper in the wood, and (somewhat) concealed from the road. All are within earshot of each other.
Fope, you can pursue Puddin, or call out after her, or talk to the others, or try to hide from the approaching lookout - who, again, doesn't seem to have seen you - or some combination of the above. What would you like to do?
Ok. I don't mind giving you an insight roll, but so far what you've seen is a lookout walking toward your position at night. And you've seen the backlit arch up the road. What are you looking for from this insight roll? Insight is for when you are suspicious or uncertain of a person in a social interaction. As I see it, you aren't having a social interaction with anybody at the moment, with the possible exception of Puddin.
Also, you are referring to the travelers as magic "people," but as far as you know (so far) only one of them is a caster. I'm not saying you shouldn't have theories, I just wanted to keep that point clear if you were genuinely not noticing.
When I make reminders like that, it's not to try to persuade anybody of anything. It's just to keep the amount of player confusion down. If you guys want to role play a character as forgetful or confused, that's 100% fine with me.
Føpé, believing there is very real danger here, will attempt to hide. He will not approach another member of his party so closely that if they are discovered Føpé will be as well.
He will attempt to remain close enough so that at least one member of the party is in site at all times, but not so close that he might have to make any stealth checks at a disadvantage.
Stealth: 18
The insight roll was an attempt to understand, from his interactions with Puddin, if she was being influenced by magic. Perhaps it was not the right way to get at that.
Perception 16
May I also roll to see if I have any historical knowledge, using my Artificer's Lore, of ever seeing anything like this before?

Let's go in order.

You are in a trance at the moment, Barnaby. Your eyes and ears are not present.
Ok. Particularly when I am phone posting, I am susceptible to sometimes overlooking something in a post. Apologies. I’ll wait for Dov here.
"Well Barnaby I think I will approach this band."
Puddin walks out into the road and towards the group.

Do not roll anything against any of your party members without my advance permission. Puddin, ignore that roll.
Fope has seen what he's seen and heard what he's heard and has to draw the conclusion he seeks for himself.
Here is where everybody is right now:
Fope is watching the lookout walk up the path/road in your general direction.
Puddin said what she said and stepped out onto the path, toward the lookout and the campfire, leaving Fope alone.
Barnaby and Kif are nearby, but a bit deeper in the wood, and (somewhat) concealed from the road. All are within earshot of each other.

I was thinking of that as a roll against the magic people, however, I'll be more cautious in the future.

Barnaby will move as required to keep Puddin in site.
Stealth if necessary: 4
