It is just over 400 feet away now. Swooping down on you. It is a giant winged reptile, the size of a horse. It is smaller then the storries you have heard, but you got no doubt that it is a dragon. Nobody, you dig another 5 cubic feet big trench.
There is not much cover here at the moment, the two holes and the stream, not much cover for an aerial attack.
Nobody continues his trench digging, still waiting on the creature's entering firing range. He was determined now to see things through, and not like an incitement of panic get the better of him! "Perhaps Z-zurzg, perhaps. Just keep that bow trained on it." He eventually said in answer to the goblin.

can I tell what color?
as Marco hauls butt away from her Margret waits for it to come into range and looses an arrow
attack 20 Damage 7 she drops her bow acting like she fumbled
but she waits to see what it does and once it comes close to attack her reaction if breath weapon is Absorb elements 6 or if its a direct attack that'll hit her poor armor class shield +5=20
The Dragon is now within 300 ft and Margret and Zurzg both shoot their arrows, but the bright sun behind the dragon makes it imposible to aim and both arrows miss their mark.
All ranged attack rolls ( spells and weapons) are with disadvantage in this round, because of the sun. Zurzg, that was your attack for this round. Margret you can take another shot.
Also, i assume you all scattered, could you roll me a d100 to randomize your location please.

Otrov waits until she can see the dragon better and the sun is no longer an issue. She tracks the dragon with The Prick and lets loose aiming for a wing. (To hit 24. 13) causing 5 damage).
[DM: Thanks for clearing it up. I wasn't sure if the dragon was considered "in combat" or had been taking "turns" in combat yet.]
The disadvantage is because the dragon deliberately uses the sun to blind you, it is neither cover nor distance that creates the problem here it is more a case of Sunlight sensitivity. Once the dragon is within 200 ft, you are able to position yourself in an angle that the sun isn‘t a problem anymore.
The dragon is useing the dash action for the last three rounds and she is aware that you are there, no advantage.
Nobody is holding his ground upon truly coming to understand how fast it was coming down, but will take a shot before hoping into the by then ten feet wide, five foot deep trench with at least one-side having a five cubes of earth acting as a sort of cover.
Action:Attack w/ Light Crossbow. To Hit - Attack: 23(Dis:11) For: 7 of piercing damage to Dragon.
Movement: Into Trench.

Yes, if there is cover Otrov would move to that but from the description it didn’t seem like there was any.

"Spread out ye all!" Dain calls. "Don't want to be caught in it's breath area, least not all of us!" he scrambles away from the others.

Ready shortbow attack (at disadvantage), for when dragon gets to within 320ft:
Attack: 19
Damage: 6

Dain still has his crossbow readied for shooting, just moving away from the others so the entire group is not taken out by a aoe affect.
Relgalyn will lay down next to the water in the stream bed and cover himself with silent image making it look like the terrain, just without him.

As the Dragon draws closer, several of you shot crossbows and arrows, but only one strikes true. The Dragon is now just over 100 ft away.
Next round.
Zurzg, you get two attacks (one for this round, and one for the next, cause your innitiativ rolled higher then the dragon).
Kai, you lvled up to 3rd lvl before we left Phandalin.

Relgalyn is still hiding under his illusion.
