Rawk, you feel Ellis' spell push the strange compulsion you had out of your mind, clear in thought for the moment you lash out at the strange shadow as it moves, striking it squarely in what you think is the 'head'. The axe slices through and down, and you get a slight tug as if it hits something.... but the Shadow seems unhurt (in game terms you hit, but your axe did no damage)
"Ooooh, little Rawk can't hurt us" the voice mocks "Don't worry, you will see us again!"
As Erro arrives with the torchlight, the Shadow creature seems to shrink back from the edge of the light envelope it casts, flowing away from the group now. As Tempest rears up in front of Rawk, you can see the shifting form heading towards the dim and dark forest.
Ellis was relieved, seeing that it had worked as Rawk had attacked the shadow creature and was back to normal for now. "Rawk, are you alright? Don't listen to the voice in your head, whatever it says. Those shadows just want to lure us in the dark so it can feed off of us. Quickly get back to camp before my spell keeping you calm wears off." he had told her before looking at Tempest and Erro. "Take her back to camp and keep her from leaving if she tries again once the spell wears off. We'll be safer at camp with the light of the fire. But keep watch on each other as well in case either of you try to leave if the shadows try to influence you too." he then said to Tempest and Erro. He would then start moving to head back to camp once he sees Rawk, Tempest, and Erro going towards camp. It was more important to him that Rawk is safe and protected right now. Ellis could not live with himself if he let her die out here after all.
Movement: 15 ft back to camp only after Rawk, Tempest, and Erro move to head back to camp.
Rawk hears the Shadow creature hiss in his mind "now we know you're here..."
The shadow creature retreats further into the shadow of the jungle, taking the dash action. Unless any of you have dark vision,it will move beyond the circle of torchlight into darkness.
Erro still doesn’t know what to make of the whole situation, but he is pretty sure that he saw the shadows move. Wide-eyed he makes for the camp, walking backwards to keep his eyes on the darkness. If he makes it back to camp, he will stake his torch on the parameter towards where the shadow was, and he will compulsively start to stoke the campfire to make it larger and brighter.
Rawk will make her way back to the campfire, her head still a bit foggy from all that occurred. She'd sit quietly for a moment then say, "It spoke to me in my mind. It said Now we know you're here and that they'd see us again... Did anyone else hear them?"she says looking down at her clawed hands and axe. "I swear I hit it. Chopped straight through the middle of it but it was like hitting water. I felt the impact and resistance but it didn't feel like I did any damage to it."
Ellis had heard Rawr, nodding back. "I didn't hear what they had said to you, but when they were after me before, I know that they were mocking me and using my own insecurities against me as if they knew everything about me. But from the sounds of what they said to you, now they're going to keep coming after each of us at night so long as we're in this jungle." he said back, starting to nod off a bit and feeling so tired right now as he badly wanted to sleep. But if he sleeps, the shadows could get one of the others instead.
You can continue to rest until morning. I'll suggest to benefit from a long rest (for those of you who took a point of exhaustion) you will need a couple of hours extra sleep / rest. Won't hugely eat into time, but I'll abstract it that there is a slightly harder survival check for navigation in the morning as you are trying to make up for lost time. You could of course, decide to push on. You will, as normal, improve a point of exhaustion if you successfully complete a long rest.
Tempest awakens and quickly scans the area for threats. Then, turning to his companions checks in on each of them to see how they're holding up.
Medicine: 11
If he rolls high enough he'll recommend Ellis and Rawk take a couple extra hours of rest. If he doesn't he'll prepare his things and get ready to depart.
Either way, once everyone is up he'll hand out three of the five remaining Goodberries, one to each companion and eat one himself leaving 1 for emergencies. "This will sustain us for the day."
With that medicine check you can see no obvious wounds on Rawk or Ellis, and some of it seems normal exhaustion, as if they had both got up and run a marathon which rest will help with. But you also notice there is more, both look drawn and stretched. Also, and perhaps this is a trick of the light, both their shadows somehow seem deeper and darker...
Ellis would have rested until morning along with everyone else, waking up and still feeling quite tired. But unless Tempest or anyone else tells him to rest more, he will grin and bear it so that they don't get delayed on heading out. He had heard Tempest as he took the Goodberry and ate it, smiling. "Thank you." he would say back to him, trying not to show how sluggish he still feels from what happened last night so that he isn't more of a burden on everyone than he already is.
I’m going to roll an Insight check to see if Erro can pick up Ellis, and perhaps Rawk, are under more stress than they are putting on; trying not to be a burden or seem weak: 17.
If he can tell, Erro will suggest taking the extra time to rest. “Surely you have earned some extra time to rest, Ellis! Just a couple days ago I hear you were stuck in the bottom of a Yuan-ti slave pit. Take a look at this beautiful country and breathe in the daylight. Fate has preordained the outcome already... it matters not when we arrive!”
If he doesn’t discern, Erro will leave Ellis and Rawk to their decisions, impressed at their ability to keep on and put their exhaustion aside. “You’d make great rangers!”
"A bit of rest will be good for you two. Erro and I can scout the immediate area and gather more firewood while you rest." Tempest says looking at the two haggared beings.
Ellis had heard Tempest and Erro, surprised and nodding back. "Really? Alright, if you guys think that it's okay. Just be careful." he said back, feeling bad for now slowing down the group and the progress they were making. But he will do as they say and go back to sleep again.
Rawk initially protests but concedes that she does still feel more tired than she thought she would. "Alright, alright. Just be careful." (Insert small warning based on her knowledge of the jungle) She flutters her wings a bit and curls them around her small frame before returning to sleep.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
You manage to get a few extra ours rest. Light returns to the jungle, and Rawk shifts uneasily - the larger predators will be out and about and the camp isn't much good against them. However, nothing untoward happens during the morning, though you are startled by loud roars and bellows and the sounds of vegetation being smashed, perhaps only a few hundred feet from your camp. Rawk and Erro would recognise the sounds of a successful hunt.
You succeed at having along rest, gaining all the benefits (though Rawk and Ellis keep any damage they took to their constitution score).
So, setting off on your journey, I need someone to make a Nature check to navigate, and decide what the rest of you are doing.
Rawk not feeling quite herself, despite eating the delicious berry, decides to let Tempest lead and assist him in navigation. She'll point out various landmarks along the way but will hang back and keep an eye out.

Ellis felt a bit better after all that rest, glad that the others had suggested it. He will stay real close to the others, now very wary of all that is in this jungle and looking around. At least it's still daylight out, so no shadows to worry about for now.
