So I've been away from D&D Beyond for about 6 months, and in September I slowly get back into the world of PbP. I'm currently running one campaign and playing in one here. I thought I'd make an interest thread to see what sort of campaign people would be interested in playing here. It breaks down into three main categories:
Preset module: The books you can buy out in the stores (or DDB marketplace) following the main plot within the prescribed book.
Existing Setting: Play a unique campaign that is based in a pre-established world of the D&D canon. Note: I'm not setting savvy with all the D&D settings, and there are so many to list that I'm only putting some of the base campaigns I'm familiar with/run for previously.
Homebrew Setting: Create a unique world and bring along whatever fits the bill. Will need to further this when a party if selected in round two (when the actual recruitment goes up)
Please make notes on this thread about why/what you think of the different options, and you never know. Perhaps other DMs might take note of the poll and make recruitment threads based on what is wanted right now.
I'm planning to make a recruitment thread next week (will update with a link when it's active) based on how this poll goes.
Do not put your character recruitment below, leave that for the upcoming recruitment thread!
Saltmarsh is one of the only campaigns I don't own so would be fun to try, failing that, homebrew is always fun, whatever setting (but I voted for every setting I am familiar with)

Ghosts of Saltmarsh is one of the books I haven't managed to have a proper look into, even though I got the alt cover version from my LGS.
If people have ideas for a homebrew world that would be interesting to run, I'm open to options.
I'm in a few games now, basically all of them active (again), but I'd be curious to see what you come up with so I'd make room for one more. Not to be selfish or anything, of course...
Anyway, I'm always a favorite of homebrew, and I generally know very little of the settings, so that would be my preferred option. But I added Dark Sun as well because it's just so different from the others, and a very interesting one at that. Generally my problem with existing settings is that I feel I should know more about them than I actually do, and thus say or do something very weird in said setting in-character. I also have basically no experience with the presets, as far as I know I'm only in LMoP at the moment, and we only just started.
Its definitely a good time of year to start a Saltmarsh\Strahd campaign. Voted for both, and I'd be up to join either if they win
Indeed, the eerie horror-inspired campaigns would be a good start. Given it'd be probably in a couple of weeks (one to close this poll, then one for recruitment) it will be quite close to Halloween when the campaign begins.

I ran a slightly short lived Dark Sun campaign via Discord/Roll20 for a group, but the timing clashes ended up with it ending up a little dead. I ended up with an expansive handbook compilation of homebrew stuff (races, archetypes, etc.) to fit it better for the campaign setting.
If I do run campaigns based on pre-existing worlds, I will generally post spoilers holding general information or offer for knowledge checks to elaborate for the players. General rule of thumb; assume the player has never experienced the campaign setting so list things that would be pertinent to the campaign.
As for homebrew, it's one of my blesses/curses. I generally have tons of plans that fly through my head throughout the day, but generally don't get the proper place and time to write everything down formally. Usually I end up with the campaign mostly having things written as we play rather than a ton of notes prior to the game starting.

Oh yeah, having a bunch of notes to go through before playing can be a bit daunting as a player. Just a (rough idea of a) world/area map, a short description of the setting and starting area is enough. Maybe the beginnings of a pantheon, if it differs from the 'standard' DnD one.
I'm definitevely in favor of homebrew, although I understand that the amount of work required is higher. At the same time, it avoids misunderstandings about the "flavour" of the preset setting that is being run.
If a homebrew, it would be interesting to have a description of the ambiance, and this is where the similarity to other settings is interesting. For example, I am not a huge fan of Ravenloft, I think that an heroic RPG like D&D does not match well with horror (I acknowledge that some players do like it though), or Eberron as I'm not a fan of "mechanical" magic and warforged.
My preferred setting is Planescape, but I'm not seeing much of it here or anywhere for that matter.
After that for the adventure, most of them sound good, just needing to avoid one that I've already played or mastered... :)
Well I've had a variety of homebrew worlds that I ran previously here (you can check on the extended signature link below, the little blue writing) if you want to see the kind of worlds I built for them.
I've always wanted to be in or run a Planescape campaign. Unfortunately 2e is a wee bit older than I am (I only started playing at the end of 3.5/start of 4e) and never managed to find a group that would like to play one. My campaign I ran for 4e (spanned about 6-7 years, from heroic to epic tier, still has some ongoing RP) was a magicpunk setting, so I've previously run campaigns with the mechanical-magical hybridising technology. Horror isn't really my main focus, but it can work with the right context and setup.
Homebrew is always fun....but Ghosts of Saltmarsh looks like fun and I haven't had any experience with it yet. I'm creating a Jack Sparrow if that wins :D

Sounds like I'd have to add a homebrew language of "Drunkard/Island Cannibal"

The problem with most of these is they start out at level 1. I've had so many campaigns die while my character hasn't yet reached level 4. Mad Mage starts at level 5. Can we do Mad Mage?

+1 To the Drunkard\Cannibal Speech as well as Being disappointed if it doesn't happen! =)
Glad to be back ;-)
Looks like it is coming up as a fave at the moment.
Yep, looks like you'll need to homebrew a Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign
