Liliana quietly steps into the grove, approaching the clearing. Behind her, some distance away, Gorarel follows.
Liliana is the first to notice a group of 3 Stirges in the branches of a tree at the edge of the clearing. They do not react to your approach, unaware of your presence.
Gorarel sees them too, but the Stirges also turn towards him as his approach makes a little more noise then Liliana's.
The Stirges are still for now. What do you do?
(Stirge: This horrid monster looks like a cross between a large bat and an oversized mosquito. Its legs end in sharp pincers, and its long, needle-like proboscis slashes the air as it seeks to feed on the blood of living creatures.)
Sighing to himself that he is never going to get to the ruins, Sindrall readies his shield and war hammer, whilst preparing his healing spells for the inevitable...
Gorarel's aim is true and one of the Stirges falls to the ground. The other two Stirges immediately flee to the other side of the clearing, out of your vision.
Liliana swaps her daggers for her trust bow and continues sneak through the edge of the clearing heading towards the abandoned backpack, keeping an eye out for the two Stirges that fled after Gorarel's arrow.
Getting close to the backpack, you can see the Stirges at the opposite edge of the clearing, 3 of them sucking at a downed buck, more of them in the branches above it, awaiting their turn or already sated. They are not paying you any attention.
In the grass, alongside the backpack you find a small red leather-bound notebook, a stick of charcoal for writing, a small smoky-white crystal on a leather string, a waterskin and some spoiled berries. On an exposed patch of dirt, someone scratched a circle surrounded by a square surrounded by a circle.

Liliana takes the notebook, crystal, quarterstaff and waterskin and stuffs it into her own pack before picking up the additional backpack and slinging it over her shoulder. Taking a moment to memorize the symbols etched into the ground she begins sneaking back toward the group and away from the Stirges and their feast.
Thialel approaches Gorarel with his hand raised and sparks floating around his arm. Keeping his gaze in front towards the direction Liliana went, he softly spoke to Gorarel: Hmm, I guess it's to be expected when you get a bunch of adventurers together...
Liliana: Hauling the extra weight and the excitement of the find distract you and you make a lot more noise on the return. You barely reach the tree line of the clearing when lots of small wings fluttering behind you. Looking over your shoulder, you see 9 Stirges flying towards you.
Note: when carrying the extra backpack, you are Encoumbered (your speed is 5 ft per round).
I should say you are dragging it, not carrying it.
Nvm, I made a wrong assumption, checking your character sheet, you can carry it just fine.

Liliana swears violently under her breath before entering the treeline and hiding behind a tree. Preparing herself to sprint towards her companions if she is found
As Liliana hunkers down behind the trunk of a large tree, Thilael and Gorarel hear numerous wings flutter as the Stirges swoop down under the canopies of the trees at the edge of the clearing. Loosing track of Liliana, they instead change their flight direction slightly towards you two.
(We haven't done a proper initiative order for this one, but following the flow of the narrative, we'll continue with party initiative, then the Stirges)
Sindrall and Sora:
You notice there is no birdsong, the grove going quiet suddenly, but there is an increasingly loud noise above it, like a swarm of bees if they had leathery wings.
Fayeth appeared suddenly agitated and then flew straight up in the air from Thilael's shoulder. Just then, Thilael lowered his gaze only to see dark shapes moving fast towards them. Let's regroup, Gorarel! Run! Without turning to look behind to see if Gorarel is following, Thilael started running back, adrenaline rising.
Gorarel in aggrement that it would be better to draw the Stirges away from Lilliana, towards the rest of his companions for a fairer fight, turns and runs. He throws his bow over his shoulder and grabs the hilts of this two shortswords.
Sindrall listening to the approaching ruckus hums a song about a knight who was known for bravely extracting himself from dangerous situations, to help sooth Jet whilst at the same time preparing prayers and spells...
Gorarel and Thilael run out to their companions who were waiting tensely. They manage to put 10 ft between them and the line of trees, when a flock of Stirges also come out, then suddenly curve up along the canopy and disappear above the grove to join the background chorus of wings.
Liliana doesn't see any more Stirges, but all you hear is wing flaps from above the canopy.

Prepared to use Unsettling Visage if targeted.
