Vesper cautiously inspects the pool, trying to figure out the nature of its design and possible function. Unfortunately, her experience in this area is limited, and she’s unable to establish whether it’s decorative or if it serves some arcane purpose.
Lumen and Chrys walk around the chamber looking for any other features or potential dangers, but aside from a door on the opposite wall from where you entered, neither of them find anything of interest.
"Hmm... 'gree akjha'... what do you suppose those runes were about, Chrys?" Kess asked, having notably paused to read the runes herself softly. "From what I know of Delzoun dwarves, the grammatical structure doesn't quite match what I typically associate with the Dwarven tongue. Do you suppose that this mine was occupied by your kin at one time? This pool... it's enormous, too. forgive my ignorance, but there aren't any dwarven deities to watery deeps, are there...? Or is that also the domain of Dumathoin as well?"
Although none of you speaks the goblin language, some of you would know that the written version does indeed use the dwarven runes and alphabet. Also, the runes you just crossed over look rather hastily scrawled.
"Dwarvish is a real old language," Chrys says, studying the door. "Lots o' races use it as the basis o' their alphabet, but I can't read it anymore than you can read sylvan, 'lest you learned it. Happens to be that goblins be one of 'em races. Giants 'n gnomes use 'em too, but... ya know, with what we've seen, I'm bettin' it's a goblin who wrote that. Too bad Pox ain't here no more."
Chrys presses her ear up against the door, listening for any sounds of movement or sound on the other side: Perception: 13
(Also, are there also runes on the door? I thought the runes were just on the floor.)
Chrys listens intently at the heavy wooden door on the other side of the room, holding her breath to maximize her own auditory perception, but the only thing she hears are the reverberations of the others moving around inside the domed stone chamber.
(You are correct, the runes are on the floor in front of the open entrance that you just came in.)
"Huh... don't hear nothin' on the other side o' the odor." She pauses and looks down when Krackle asks his question.
"That pool o' glowin' stink water?" Chrys frowns. "The only thing I'd wanna throw in there is somethin' holy enough to blast the smokin' stuff outta that pool o' evil. Still..." She looks at the saddlebag trap-detector. "We can try throwin' this thing in, if ya like, but to be honest... I think it's just gonna ruin our bags. An' if somethin's sleepin' in there, I'm not sure we wanna wake it up... yet."
She rubs her chin. "Should we open this door, though? The goblins obviously though somethin' bad was up here, if they put them runes in the floor. Could be a warnin', like the undead in the other room. We can press forward, an' we might fine more o' the evil native to this here temple. Or, we can backtrack, an' keep lookin' for our original targets, them goblins." She looks at the door again. "I'm fine either way, I gotta feelin' we'll be sackin' this temple and purifin' it, in the end. Least, that's what I wanna do. But I ain't so sure we're gonna find them goblins behind this door, to be honest. Prob'ly somthin' worse, is my guess."
Chrys nods at Vesper. "Hallway 'round the corner?" she asks, moving back towards the south end of the room and indicating the west-leading passage with a tilt of her chin.
Chrys will be keeping an eye out for movement and juump scare danger as they progress: Perception: 11
Krackle would have dug out a small piece of stale bread.. .prepared to toss it in the pool but as they mention not waking anything up inside.. he would put the bread into his mouth instead. Chewing the bread, he would nod towards his companions as they mention finding the goblins and he would stick close as they head back through the tunnels.
Turning around, you filter past the glowing, steaming pool and exit this circular chamber the way you came in. Passing over the runes again, you can see that they’ve apparently been scrawled with charcoal, or perhaps the end of a burnt stick. The black writing easily smudges if you shuffle your feet over it or rub it with your hands.
Going twenty feet back to the junction, you begin walking down the east hallway, which is even more narrow than the passage that led here; it’s just over ten feet wide. Being even deeper inside this underground temple, the place is eerily quiet, and the only sound you hear is the soft, dull echo of your footsteps on the tiled floor.
With your darkvision, you can dimly see to a distance of about 60 feet, and as you quietly shuffle further down the hallway, you see another opening in the right hand wall about twenty feet away, where the passage splits again. From that point, it continuing straight, or branches right.
Lumen considers completely scuffing out the runes with his feet but then considers that maybe they're keeping something more dangerous at bay.
He creeps along the hall and stops just short of the first opening (stealth: 23), listening for any sound and if he hears none, peeking around the corner and looking inside (perception: 7).
Lumen creeps forward and approaches the opening in the right wall. Not hearing any noises, he peeks around the corner and sees that it’s not a hallway, but a small alcove. A tiled mosaic covers the entire north wall of this area, depicting a woman with ivory hair, dressed in robes of silver and blue, wrestling with a black-robed figure whose face is hidden by a cowl.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lumen takes a beat to stare at the mosaic and get a sense of how well it was crafted, if it's aesthetically beautiful, and see if he can see anything in it.
He relays what he sees to the others. "Just a painting. Well, a mosaic. I've not had the chance to work in this medium..." he shakes his head. "We should see if there's anything hidden in it, given all the tricks we've seen so far."
He'll look at the mosaic to see if there's anything at all that looks dangerous or like a trap that might spring, any treasures hidden within it or behind it, or anything magical inherent in it. Investigation: 20 Perception: 22
EDIT: Jeez Lumen, maybe think where your amazing rolls should go...

Would Lumen know if the goblin tongue used the dwarven alphabet?

"Let's backtrack. We can clear out the temple some other time, but not today."

Lumen takes one last look at the runes to see what sort of ink/material was used to draw them. Then he follows the group out of the chamber...
"That would be wise. We came to fight goblins, not what could a monster from the Underdark."
