Kei
"Well I guess we have permission to come aboard" Kei shouts as Bokobird comes about. "See if you can drop us on the deck" he hollers against the wind trying to indicate to Boko where to land.
”Excellent idea,” agrees Gerrard, though boarding the ship recalls to him his friend Captain Fenwader. He wishes the halfling well, but wonders what further adventures await him in his new path.
Shaking out of his reverie, the young noble stows his bow and prepares for landing.

(Unless Boko-Eagle has other ideas, we'll presume Gerrard and Kei are deposited on the deck of the suspended ship.)
This decrepit-looking hull of a ship is suspended from the crane by massive chains, all of which creak and groan ominously as the ship shifts in the wind. The only apparent access to the vessel’s interior is near the bow on the port side, where the last skum was killed. A grate in the hull there belches smoke, while water flowing along a wooden trough pours through a second grate into the hull.
Boko the eagle gently deposits them onto the ship where they wish and then wheels around the ship, looking at all sides, hoping to find anything hidden or other sign of interest or movement. Then she returns to where the party is and lands gently, looking around
Gerrard examines the smoky grate that the skum was fiddling with when it died, looking through it as best he can. It is not exactly smoke, he learns, but mostly foul-smelling steam mixed with a little coal smoke. He can see a little inside – the vessel appears to be partially filled with steaming water. But he sees a bit of decking within, too, shiny with condensation. He cannot see anything more. As Gerrard moves around on the hulk, you can hear an ominous creaking and groaning from the chains holding it aloft. There is also a dull sound within – the low crackling rumble of a coal-fired stove, perhaps.
Boko-eagle surveys the exterior of the ship. There is little to note. Steamy water spills out from between the planks of the hull, raining down to the mud below.
Looking at the grate mechanism, Gerrard tries to open it carefully and somewhat quietly, if he can. He looks to Kei and says, "This looks like a good source of heat and humidity--is there any indication of where the water is going after it is heated, other than dripping in the mud below?"
Sleight of Hand if needed: 23
Gerrard prepares to go in if he manages to get the grate successfully open.

"I saw nothing whilst we were airborne" replies Kei. He cautiously peers over the closest railing, being careful not to put any weight against it just in case it fails. "All I see is steam and muck. Knowing what is meant to be around here somewhere it wouldn't surprise me if there's some extra dimensional portal down below." Kei offers Gerrard help in freeing the stuck grate.
Having circumnavigated the vessel from the air, Boko concludes that there are only two obvious entries into the boat - the grate on the port side that Gerrard is trying to open, and the grate atop the bow, through which the water flows into the vessel. She reckons the rate and quantity flowing into the grate probably match the copious dribbling of hot water spilling out of the entire underside of the vessel.
Gerrard pops the grate open fairly easily.
The air within the compartment beyond is oppressively hot and humid. Clouds of smoke rise and escape through the grate above, billowing from a pair of roaring boilers near the bow, bolted to the deck and walls on either side of a large pool of steaming water. The walls, floor, and ceiling of the compartment are thick and shiny with condensation and mildew. There are no signs of life.
"I suppose I will go in and have a look, though I fail to see what purpose this ship fills unless there is something in here needing hot water to live," says Gerrard. He carefully lowers himself in through the grate and looks around inside.

The air is stifling hot and humid inside, all surfaces slick with condensation and mold. Gerrard sees a hatch in the slimy bulkhead wall leading aft. His sharp eyes also catch a bit of movement within the foul pool.
Drawing his weapons and e flaming the dagger, Gerrard says, “There is something in the pool…”. He takes up a defensive stance near the pool so the others can come in safely behind him if they wish.
“Perhaps if we stop or divert the water influx the pool will drain enough for us to see its occupant,” suggests the young noble.

Does the trough of water flowing into the ship seem moveable? Boko the eagle looks at it and wonders if she could move it, hearing Gerrard's suggestion...
"Boko, can you divert the water somehow with your nature magic?" Kei says as he carefully descends the ladder (?) from the deck into the hold. The glow of Gerrard's flaming knife gives the oppressive heat and humidity an even more sinister feel. "Have we stepped into a portal to the Nine Hells?" Sweat wiped from his forehead immediately resurfaces. His eyes focus on the pool, waiting to catch a glimpse of the creature Gerrard has mentioned.
The wooden water trough bringing water into the vessel is as old and slimy as the vessel itself. While not moveable, it's undoubtedly smashable, with a little work.
There are just a couple of footholds down onto the bow cabin deck from the outer deck.
(Kei may make a Perception or Investigation check if he wants to try to see what Gerrard saw.)
Boko, still in massive eagle form, steps over to the water trough. Then, looking like a cat knocking something off a shelf just to be a jerk, she reaches down with a talon, grabs, and wrenches it, trying to smash or divert it.
Talon Attack: 13 Damage: 10
Then she bends down and tries to mess it up again with a large beak.
Kei can see not one, but three forms looking up at him from the depths of the foul pool. They are well submerged, and he can see little but their lidless eyes staring at him a couple of feet below the scummy surface.
The water flow becomes jerky and irregular into the pool as a giant eagle tries to interrupt the water flow. She is beginning to succeed. (Boko: Make a DC12 STR check to try and wrench the damaged trough completely free in one mighty pull. Otherwise, she is doing a pretty good job of hacking it apart - it's only a matter of time.)
The area inside the cabin is difficult terrain because of the moisture and slime everywhere.
Suddenly, two tentacles emerge from the steaming water, grabbing Kei by the ankles and trying to pull him into the pool. Kei: make a DC24 Athletics or Acrobatics check, or become grappled and pulled into the hot, foul pool.
Mind-Breaking Touch #1: 21. Hit: 17 psychic damage, and Kei has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws until the end of his opponents' next turn. Mind-Breaking Touch #2: 23. Hit: 16 psychic damage, and Kei has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws until the end of his opponents' next turn.
Regardless of their success, Kei is also skewered with a barrage of sharp objects: Trident Attack #1: 11. Hit: 9 piercing damage. Trident Attack #2: 13. Hit: 9 piercing damage. Trident Attack #3: 12. Hit: 6 piercing damage. Trident Attack #4: 26. Hit: 6 piercing damage. and one more Mind-Breaking Touch #3: 9. Hit: 13 psychic damage, and Kei has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws until the end of his opponents' next turn.

(Unlikely necessary with that roll)
Boko eagle lands, perching next to the others by the grate. (This is the only entry into the boat?)
She's ready to fly down to catch anyone if Kei or Gerrard wind up falling. She doesn't want anyone in that muck.
And if she can lend a giant talon to help pull on the grate, she will.
