Searching the small clump of fungus and mushrooms you notice a loose stone right above them. Curious you poke at the loose stone. It moves. As you continue to prod and pull, the loose stone gives way to a small concealed cavity. Inside that cavity is a small leather pouch containing four cut pieces of blue quartz. You likely have not seen many mushrooms given your background and they are as intriguing up close as they were from the entrance way.
Make sure you add the gemstones you found to your inventory Tiffany, they can be sold for money.
Angus clumsily searches, knocking over one of stuffed armchairs and fumbling around. It would be understandable if the room were still darkened, but Gulin's torch makes the room as bright as day. Now that the room is lit, it is obvious that the hole in the corner of the room is a fireplace. Approaching the fireplace, Angus steps over a collection of small animal bones. The fireplace and chimney are cracked, undoubtedly presenting many small nooks that could be used to find anything. Suddenly, a swarm of spiders crawls out of the fireplace and begins to climb up Angus' arm. He quickly brushes them off and assumes an offensive stance.
Caspia Aspergina:
"Sounds good Caspia, let's get this floor fully explored and rejoin the others."
The two of you leave the living area and continue down the hallway to the last room on this floor. If the previous living area was near empty, this one is entirely desolate. Aside from a large amount of plaster that has fallen from the ceiling this room is bare.
A 3, a 5, and a 1. The best, around, no rolls gonna keep us down.
Gulin begins to summon a signature firebolt, but looking at the decrepit wooden structure decides against it. He slides the hammer out of it's harness, moving adjacent to Angus and slamming down a thunderous blow in the middle of the swarm.
Gulin's hammer smashes into the swarm, however, the spiders are relatively small and nimble. Pulling the hammer back, Gulin notices that his attack only smashed two spiders. Maybe there are more effective methods of insecticide? The air crackles with energy around the spiders.
Your move Andrew!
Caspia Aspergina:
You poke and prod at the plaster which has fallen onto the floor. The soft mixture of lime and cement in the middle of the room is highly intriguing. You have never seen this unique substance before in your travels. Who knew that sand was so versatile. You wonder if this substance could ever be applied to your aquatic hometown.
"Caspia, stop messing with that junk, it is just plaster! We've got this floor covered, let's rejoin the others and decide if we investigate the basement or the second floor next!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I'm hoping work has begun to slow back down and I will have time again to post regularly. Potentially manipulated dice results refers to a roll I had in the open that I decided wouldn't make sense to show.
Zi walks over to the plaster and playfully picks some up, and jokingly throws it at Caspia's knees. It is a little moldy with age. "Take some of it with you then! Not sure how it would hold up under water, but you never know!" Before Caspia can respond, Zi walks out the door and down the hall.
Meanwhile, in another room...
Angus backs up five feet, pulls a dart out of his pocket and throws it at the mass of spiders.
Angus Dart Attack: Attack: 16 Damage: 5
The dart is expertly thrown and pierces a single spider within the mass. It's legs stop moving. Looking at the remaining number of spiders. The dart does not appear to be as effective on this type of enemy compared to enemies Angus has encountered in the past.
Angus McTavin:
Visions of bar-fights and boarding actions surface within your mind. Ranged weapons have had their place in those fights, but often the most effective approach in the past has been a lunge with the shortsword followed by aggressive punches and kicks. Over the past few months. quite a number of bar patrons have made the mistake of trying to stand toe to toe with you in a melee. In the end, none bested you.
The spiders lunge towards their closest remaining target, Gulin. As they move, a thundershock is heard and roughly half of the spiders are thrown against the wall and ceiling, smashed to bits. Outside in the hall, Zi turns to Caspia, "I think our friends found some trouble!"
"WE ARE COMING TO HELP!" Zi yells over her shoulder down the hallway from where she heard the commotion. Caspia and Zi take off down the hall in a full sprint.
The remaining spiders regather their numbers and attack gulin.
Gulin feels the spiders climb up his legs and under his armor. Suddenly his body stings with white hot pain.
Correct me if I am wrong Josh, you want me to use Shield as a reaction whenever it would prevent damage. That would bring your AC only up to 21 in this case right so it wouldn't prevent the damage? If you have another trick up your sleeve let me know and I will retcon this. Also, the spiders are actually now occupying the same space as Gulin.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Steve, typically yeah. Shield brings my AC up to 21. I'm very likely to use a spell slot to prevent damage, especially at level 1, so you can always assume I'll use it unless it is my very last spell slot (I might have something planned for that). My imagination is that Gulin attempts to parry or dodge against attack rolls less than 12, takes a glancing blow on his armor when less than 16, and deflects with his magical shield up to 20. On attacks 21 and over, he can't even get the shield up in time, and is unable to cast anything prior to the blow. Once I get Absorb Elements next level (or if I find a spellbook...) expect that it'll be a similar story.
I'm also assuming that the forums broke what the attack and damage rolls of the spiders were originally. Let me know what damage, if anything, I took.
Gulin sputters, stomping at the spiders in his vicinity and cursing in dwarvish.
<"Damned gross creepies! Pox on you and all your eight-legged kin!">
He brushes the spiders off his arms and legs, drops the lantern to the ground, and raises his warhammer over his head in a two-handed grip before slamming it down into the mass of spiders. The air around the hammer compresses in the downswing, crackling with energy.

The spiders are brushed back off of Gulin onto the adjacent floor. Gulin steps forward swinging downward with his warhammer, but the spiders are now dispersed and he fails to connect.
Angus Sword and Fist Attacks:
Sword: Attack: 11 Damage: 9
Fist: Attack: 8 Damage: 4
Stepping forward Angus lunges towards the swarm with his shortsword, and follows it up with a punch. The ground splinters as Angus' shortsword barely misses a spider and digs deep into the rotten floorboards. By now the spiders have scattered to the corners of the room. Angus follows it up with a punch, but the spiders are well out of the area. Angus pulls his throbbing red hand back, shaking the splinters off. The spiders rush forward and coat Angus.
Swarm of Spiders Attack: 6 Damage: 4
However, the monk is too fast, easily brushing the spiders off of his legs. Angus and Gulin hear a shout from the hallway, "What's going on in there?!?"the sounds of footsteps and armor echo throughout the room as Zi and Caspia enter."Ugh more bugs!"
Angus' sword again strikes a floorboard. As he attempts to pry it loose, he spots a solitary spider out in the open and crushes it with his boot. A sickening crunch is audible within the room. Gulin swing's down with his hammer. This time the blow strikes true. Small spider limbs can be seen twitching at the edge of his hammer. Static begins to fill the air again. The spiders lunge towards Zi who has just entered the room, but a boisterous thunderclap is let loose. The remaining spiders are thrown to all corners of the room. Looking around you are shocked at the sheer amount of carnage on display. Who would think that the destruction of creatures this small could create such a mess.
With the danger passed, Angus completes his investigation of the fireplace, deftly probing the remaining stones. One stone feels out of place and Angus pries it loose with his fingers.
Angus McTavin:
The stone gives way to reveal a hidden compartment containing a wooden box. Inside the box are 30 sp (silver pieces aka money) and two small pouches of alchemical powders.
Zi speaks up as she painstakingly removes spider remains from her armor. "Find anything up there Angus? Our luck in the other rooms wasn't particularly great, but I think we have this floor covered. It appears the only thing this house is haunted with is a terrible insect infestation. Anyone have a bright idea on where to proceed next?"
You may attempt to recheck a specific explored room, rest if you can find a suitable spot, or continue onward. There are two stairs leading upward, the first in the entrance hall and a second in the kitchen. Similarly you have found two methods of travel to the basement, a set of stairs in the scullery, and a trapdoor within the western leaving room marked by the red box.
Gulin takes the strap of his warhammer, wiping off green slime and spider bits before slinging it back over his shoulder. He picks up the lantern from where he set it down on the floor. "Aye, believe Angus and I found a trapdoor down in the west room. Might be best to start there, see what secrets this place might really have beyond a bunch of angry bugs."
He pauses, in thought. "If I were a mad alchemist, I'd keep the best goodies hidden in the basement. Cooler temperature and don't have to worry about sunlight spoiling your ingredients. Worst case it's a little hidey hole and we take the stairs." As he waits for his companions to agree or dissent, he pops a leather-wrapped flask out with his free hand, thumbing open the attached stopper and taking a sip.
