Ketch stands outside the door keeping an eye on the passage, hoping to catch sight of a wandering gnome who isn’t trying to kill them for some unknown reason.
Xel-Thoth states to John - "The gnomes of this place seem to have made a wine from the mushrooms we saw outside. Best not partake too much. We still haven't determined why the gnomes are acting this way."
“They’re gnomes. Gnomes are like a box of chocolates, Gruumsh always said.” Ketch replied from outside the door. “You never know what’s inside until you bite them.”
John smacks his lips, thoughtfully. The taste of the mushroom wine was not especially great, but it was not especially bad either. Though when it came to food and drink he was not picky. So he takes another handful from the barrel shrugging at Xel-Thoth's warning. And drinks it down as well, before standing and making his way back to the sleepy gnome and cradling her under his arm again.

"A fascinating theory, friend, your Grummsh is very wise! I wouldn't have thought to bite a fellow gnome to understand them better! I would expect bones and flesh, but I suppose there could literally be anything!
Chom turns to John and nods vigorously. "Let us proceed further! Hopefully we have not missed the canapes!
John makes his way back of out the door they came in. "What are canapes?" He asks Chom, as he comes to stand in front of the door they passed to get to the mushroom wine barrels.
"Is it food?" He wonders aloud as he tries to open the door in front of him with his free hand. "I am getting hungry."
"The most wonderful food! Small, bite-sized treats of everything imaginable to feast on! Although a gentleman of your size would likely polish of plates of them without breaking sweat!"
As the door swings open, the sound of the waterfall hits you. Then the mist swirls in. You walk in and see a slick wall in front of you. To the right you see the cave opening leading out to the valley you were in. From above you hear two shouts, one in Gnomish and one in Common.
"Who goes there?"
Ten feet up you see a rocky ledge and two gnomes, one male and one female, standing about five feet from each other.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"I am John Shumpard!"
He holds the bound Gnome out and upwards in front of him in both hands.
"We come in peace! She tried to shoot us full of arrows! But we did not harm a hair on her head. Please, speak with our companion Mr. Chomsky. He is a Gnome as well!"
"And we are here for the surprise party as well! But we didn't bring a present, I'm so terribly sorry!" Chom runs out the front of the group, darting between John's legs, to better talk to the gnomes.
Behind Chom, Xel-Thoth in a low voice tells him : "Chom, could you try to explain our situation to your kinsfolk. It doesn't look good with us lugging around one of their own like a sack of potatoes."
"Potatoes are more valuable than crazy gnomes," Ketch offers in a slightly hushed voice so those in a distance would not hear. "Much more versatile and don't scream when you peal them..."
Both of them make the same gesture and streaks of blue-white light shoot down. On either side of you, far enough to cause no damage but near enough to prove the point, are patches of ice.

Xel-Thoth floats over to where John is and cautiously examines the liquid coming from the barrel and tries to determine what it is?

John hesitates a beat to allow Xel-Thoth a look at whatever he has pooled in his hand, before gulping the palm full down.
It is a wine, thought not one that you have tasted before. You think back to the first gnome you met, and realize it's mushroom wine.

The only way out is the way you came in.
((Didn’t we skip a door or turn in order to keep going straight?))
((i think DM means one way out of barrel room))

"We're here to talk to your leader or king or mayor, or burgermeister or basically anyone in charge," Ketch pitches in.
Xel-Thoth adds: "We are here on official business from Phandalin."
