The shambling creatures leave you alone during the trek toward the stairs. Killian opens the doors to a large circular room with a stone conical pit in its center. Twenty feet high, circling above the pit is an overlook; there is no ladder to reach it, nor a way to climb up the smooth stone walls, but Hox and Rycider emerge onto it nonetheless.
The sight inside the pit is equally as grim and dark as the rest of this stronghold. Standing over the pit, you are looking upon yourselves in dire straits. Hovering over each of these versions of yourselves are tall, lanky humanoids with squid-like heads and unpleasant tentacles dangling over their mandibles, and creatures that look like giant bats, with the same squid-like features. They are apparently in the midst of some sort of torture. Some of the creatures are bent over your still alternate forms, with their tentacles attached to their skulls. The alternate Aradurk, screaming in pain when you arrive, falls silent and still when you reach the pit. The alternate Tanakir soon picks up the screaming.
“Put up your weapon,” Killian snaps. “These are phantasms meant to unnerve you.” She looks up at the pair on the overlook. “Is there a way through up there?” she calls out to them.
Is there any way across the room? Does the pit go wall to wall? Are there any visible exits, either on the ground level, or the overlook level?

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
OOC: The pit is in the center of the room. There is a walkway that circles it the whole way around the room. There are no visible exits on ground level, aside from the doors you entered through. Only the edge of the overlook can be seen from ground level, so Killian can't see any exits on that level yet.
The strange creatures within glance toward the torch, but quickly turn back to their torture of the alternate Tanakir. A cloaked figure appears suddenly near the edge of the pit, on the opposite side. "Well...that is a new one. Right on time, but a new approach. Ever amusing...it is as if you are aware...ever changing..." the figure mutters.
The figure removes the hood of his cloak, revealing a long, mangy tangle of grey hair and beard, much older and filthier than when last some of you saw him atop the throne of a flying tower: Denorian.
Gruun will study the old man for a few moments before shifting back to the pit creatures. He'll try to quietly sheath his Greataxe and withdraw the chain in his pack.
You have obviously tortured us many times Denorian Rycider gestures to the macabre scene And since you are still asking, we haven't told you where the boy is.
Denorian smiles, his face pointing downward with wild eyes. "Don't worry, my dear Rycider. I have all the time in the world," he says. Laughing maniacally in response to Killian's insult, he throws his arms high, shouting, "Manananggal!"
A puff of black smoke fills the center plane of the room, just below the balcony where Hox and Rycider stand. Emerging from within, nearly a dozen forms take flight. They resemble the torsos of humans with pale skin and long, matted black hair, but entrails dangle from where their lower halves should be connected and they sport long, batlike wings.
"I will ask you one more time! Where. Is. The boy?" Denorian shouts with his staff held high.
Killian takes a step back to settle into a fighting stance, and incants a few words, her shield held up. Then she grasps the pommel of her longsword (but leaves it sheathed), watching the wizard and his summoned creatures.
Denorian chuckles as Killian casts protection upon herself, Tanakir summons a steed to his side and Hox draws weapons. He throws his staff high, and the menacing flying creatures attack.
Round 1 Order: Players <===== Manananggal
Placement: There are ten manananggal attacking, each flying 10-15 feet high off of the ground and 5-10 feet below Hox and Rycider. Denorian is at the opposite side of the pit, 20 feet straight across or 40 feet around the sides.
Aradurk plods along as gracefully as he can, surveying the space in front of and above the party.

Tanakir raises an eyebrow as he looks into the pit, "This is decidedly less pleasant than the last island."
Aradurk, seeing himself or some magical copy of him, seemingly in some state of death or otherwise unhealthiness, blanches then gets restless.
"I don't know what these things are but this is NOT RIGHT!", he says as he draws his rapier.

Without looking up at Hox, Denorian grimly states, "Look around you. It does not matter. If you could have succeeded, you would have by now."
The old man stares hard at Aradurk, practically growling in response, "Tell me where the boy is."
