Nenne knows immediately after casting her first spell that it fails to have any effect. As the cleric performs the ritual Allyssa steps outside not wanting to look upon her future. The last of Nenne's enchanted words come out bearing the inner power given to her by Kelemvor. Energy gathers around the body and the cleric knows that her spell has taken effect. She can feel the spell's power working as it should except...except there. There is a distinct pit of energy missing somewhere deep inside this man, Merric. Nenne knows it is not something physically missing and no physician could ever find it. There is no soul to protect in this man, but his body will be preserved by the spell as long as it lasts.
Nenne gathers her supplies after her spell concludes and takes one long look at Merric before seeking out Allyssa. "My condolences on your loss," she says kindly, putting a hand on her shoulder. "I have done what I can, and I am sorry I was not swift enough to do more. If there is any solace to be found in it, I have consecrated his body. For the next tenday, time and decay will not assault him further. It is the least I can do for his soul. And if you will permit me, I shall attempt to do something for yours."
With Allyssa's permission, her holy symbol will glow softly as a soothing warmth flows through her touch. (Remove Curse)
The half elf readily accepts any aid the cleric is willing to give. The spell's energy flows through her and when it is done she asks if she is supposed to feel any different yet.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nenne stifles a sigh and says, "Perhaps in time," casting a Healing Word to try to ease some of her physical pain. (6 HP) "You and the rest of the afflicted - did you all become symptomatic in southern Chult? And who resurrected you? It wasn't perchance someone from Orolunga, was it?"
The healing spell has no effect and she hasn't ever heard of Orolunga. The only thing they have in common is the date that they started to rot. Each of them, to include those that have already succumb to the curse, started to rot a little over two months ago.
ooc: Boosey has been with Nenne and Allister throughout, but just observing so far.
He ponders what he has heard for a while. "We should speak to more of those afflicted. If it turns out that this curse began for everyone two months ago, then we have a place to start looking. While we don't know what the Soul Monger is, there must have been an event or an arrival of something here in Chult back then. Find out what that was and we may be on the path to finding this damned curse." He places a hand gently on Nenne's arm. "You have done your utmost for these people, so please do not take on the guilt for not being able to help them. This curse is not of your doing and you shouldn't take responsibility for it." He tries to give her a reassuring look. "This is not your fault and it is a burden that you should not have to bear," he says intently. " Be proud that you have managed to save one soul at least from it, at great cost to yourself, and be sure that we all will find this thing and destroy it."
Allister´s remark at Nenne back in the temple of Tymora was said only in jest but it was obvious that it hurt her a great deal. That was not what he wanted, all the way to Malar´s Throat he is quiet and trying to figure out what to do or say to make up for it. He watches her talk to Allyssa, perform her rites and and suffer another setback. After Boosey tries to console Nenne he takes the gnome by the arm, walks a few steps with him and whispers „You mind waiting for us at the entrance to Malar´s Throat? We’ll be with you in a minute.“ He then walks to Nenne, takes her arm and says „Come.“ He takes her to a side street where no one else is, turns her around to face him and hugs her. He doesn’t know if eladrin hug or what they do to comfort someone but it’s the best Allister could think of. „I´m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I thought you were already past beating yourself up about this. Next time I’ll hold my tongue. Sorry.“ Allister disengages from her and says „Let’s meet with Boosey, ok?“
“Okay you include. Vargach friend yes? Yes you companion of Vargach. Vargach guardian of tribe. Kill monster, protect home.”
The lizardfolk wanted to explain more but his limited vocabulary in common made it hard for him to put thoughts and concepts into words. He nodded approvingly when he saw the other’s face. He did not understand why the man was hiding his appearance, but figured the other used this hood in a similar manner as he had taken the appearance of a slain foe -to blend in and stay out of danger’s way.
”So why you attack pirates? And why come to cure curse? You know any more about dragon and pale dwarves?”
While Allister speaks to Nenne, Boosey returns to Allyssa. "Tell me friend. When this disease first appeared was there anything unusual happening here in Chult? A meteor perhaps, strange lights in the sky, strange weather or the arrival of unusual visitors? Anything you think that may have been out of the ordinary could give us a clue about this evil, however insignificant you think it might be." His face softens. "I'm loathe to give you hope, but my friend there," he gestures towards Nenne, "takes her work very seriously, and her lack of success with this is affecting her. We will do our best to end this curse," and he takes her hand in his, giving it a comforting squeeze. "I just hope we can end it in time," he looks further in to Malar's Throat, "for all your sakes."
Allyssa looks truely crestfallen to tell the bard that she wishes there was more she could tell him, but there isn't anything significant that she can think of. She hardens her face and tells him that she will face death bravely; she thanks the party for their time and appreciates their attempts to save her and the others so afflicted..
"To be honest, I've only read stories of races. For 40 years I've only been around my people and our culture. This is the first time for me. So other than researches and book, I will have to say no. I do not know red dragons and pale dwarfs. As for attacking pirates, I just went along with my friends." With that Funderburk began to sweep his hands above his head in a fluid motion, bringing them down when necessary. "I honestly care not for good nor bad. Right nor wrong. Much less morals and gods. My people focus on perfecting ourselves. We've realized long ago that you cannot try to perfect the world. For the pirates, my friends attacked them, therefore I attacked. And when one gave up on attacking, so that he may live, perfectionism told me he was unlike the others. A coward." He shugged afterwards, "Having a beast companion taught me many things like patience. However my journey so far taught me diligence in patience. Since now I have towait to see her."
"To answer to your question about the curse, I'm simply following my friends and helping them along the journey. If I was asked by some councilmen that came to my door, I would turn him away. I believe not in revivification. When one dies they deserved it. Makes the story better yes?" He gently patted the shoulder of the lizard, trying to not startle or put them in an uncomfortable feeling. "Remember that for me."
"I also appreciate what you have done for your people. Although I care not for evil nor good, I do believe in selfless service and dedication. It is much appreciated on my behalf, and I would very much believe so from your people as well."
Nenne smiles vaguely at Boosey's attempt to encourage her, though she doesn't give any response and retreats into thought. She follows Allister wordlessly, deeply preoccupied with determining her next steps to help the afflicted such that she barely notices where she is until his embrace jolts her back to reality. She stiffens - first in surprise, then as a means to keep herself in check.
She listens to him. When he breaks away, her shoulders relax a little. She inclines her head slightly at his apology, eyes down more in recollection than shame. "You could not have known how I would react," she says, quiet. "I haven't spoken of it, and neither has Worlo. I don't think we're able, just yet. Not fully." She closes her eyes and winces a little before continuing.
"I came here today in obedience to my calling, but also in the hope that I could gain insight." She fiddles with her amulet. "The storyteller is mistaken - I do not feel responsible for the curse, or for curing it on my own. And you are mistaken. I am not punishing myself for what I did in a moment. I am grieving that the moment does not seem to end. I came here..." She swallows some emotion and raises her head. Her expression is determined, and hollow. "I came here to see if I would hear the creature, again. Because if I could encounter it in another fight for a soul, perhaps I could determine how to stop Worlo and myself from hearing it every time we close our eyes."
She takes a slow, deliberate breath and stands at attention. She seems calmer, and more like herself. "My path is a long one, warrior, and has always been. Atonement should not be easy. I will be well, in time. And there is grace enough even for me." She smiles, an authentic one this time. "Thank you for your kindness. It means much. Please go on ahead of me; I should like to remain here a while. There are more visits I can make as the soothing hand of Kelemvor. I will reconvene with everyone tonight." With that, she places a gentle hand on his face in gratitude for his compassion and takes her leave.

Nenne will spend the rest of the afternoon and evening in Malar's Throat, visiting the dying, saying prayers, and doing her best to comfort them. She will ask the man with the tattooed phoenix ring if he would want it gone. If he does, she'll cast Remove Curse so that he can take the ring off. She'll then trance for four hours to get her spells back, return to Merric, and cast Speak with Dead. As the spell doesn't return a soul to its body, she is curious about the experience and what the animated spirit of Merric will say. After introducing herself, her questions are:
1. Did you see, hear, or sense anything as you were dying?
2. Can you think of anything unusual that happened the day you became cursed?
3. Have you any requests I may carry out?
She has two more questions that I'll save based on what his answers are.
„Ok, that went well.“ Allister is glad things are back to normal with Nenne. Or hopefully they are and not this constant fighting and hurting is. On his way back to the bazaar he finds Boosey with the cursed adventurer. He asks him „You wanna join me? Nenne wants some time on her own, and I plan to get rid of this extra weight.“ He pats his purse. „I might need someone to convince the vendors that I deserve more than they think.“
Nenne concentrates of the body of Merric, hoping that her spell works in some fashion. Others around the area seem not to notice as the effects of the spell take place in the cleric's mind. Merric rises into a sitting position and looks at the cleric as she speaks her first question. When he speaks, the voice comes out dry and hollow, typical of the spell, "Only darkness. A sense of oblivion...Nothing was unusual...I still owe Olipher twenty silver. Tell him I'm sorry."
Nenne will use her final two questions to ask how to find Olipher and to ask Merric about his favorite memory, so that his spirit can take something happy or peaceful with it as it returns through the veil. She will then carry out his request to the best of her ability, say goodbye to Allyssa, and return to the rest of the group after making some purchases.
When she sees Vargach, she will hand him a potion of healing and say, "I know it is difficult for you to converse in Common, but I would love to hear more about your tribe. Perhaps one night on our next expedition into the jungle, if you are willing, I can petition my god for the ability to understand your native language. Then we can communicate without barrier."
She smiles at him. "I am glad to have you with us, kind archer. Please accept this gift as a token of welcome and friendship."
Merric tells Nenne that Olipher is a gnome that works at the Port Nyanzaru docks. He relives a memory of spending time with his family as a child.
Once the party reconvenes Eku comes up to Vargach. She looks up to him in the eye for a moment before saying something in draconic. She then gives him a skinning knife fashioned out of a bone handle. It's a high quality make and the pommel is shaped in the form of a crocodile.
Vargach and Sthara:
Eku said, "I believe our upcoming journey is going to bring both honor and hardship. I appreciate your bow.
In the morning the party once again sets out from Port Nyanzaru along the river south east. The sky remains dark and overcast, but no rain comes. By kid day the party spots three lobster-like humanoids in the river some hundred feet ahead. Eku identifies them as aldani, the lobster folk of the region.
„What else can you see in this jungle? Lizards, lobsters, maybe we come across a few shark people in a day or two. Are these crabmen friend or foe, Eku?“ Just in case the answer is foe Allister gets his crossbow and loads it.
Eku explains that they mostly keep to themselves and are want to avoid civilization as a whole. She admits that it is odd for them to be this far north of the basin, but suspects that they were just following the river and got carried away with how far they traveled. She suggests going around the creatures so as not to disturb them.
