“I’ll be dammed. This... is... just another curiosity on a quest filled with oddities. I bet Funderburk and Boosey love this, just so much material for tales and books. But I tell you, I’m not gonna go through this ice field. I won’t freeze my ass off. And who knows if this is even real. Maybe, I hope, this is just some spell to make us hallucinate.“
Eku replies to Allister's comment under a screwed up face in confusion, "I am hesitant to do the same. It is not too big that we cannot go around, but I question how this is even possible. The temperature is soaring here and I do not see even the slightest bit of melt in there." She turns to the rest of the party and asks, "Have any of you heard of this? Maybe in a book or some Feywild thing?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"The Feywild is more than ice and snow," Nenne shakes her head. "I have not heard tale of phenomena like this, however I wonder if this is similar to the ruins of Ubtao. Perhaps there is a hidden portal to another plane here? Or a powerful magic at play? I am not well-versed in the arcane."
She peers at the area to ascertain whether it seems to be natural or magical in composition. (Nature or Arcana, both have the same modifier: 3)
"I too know not of what it is," Funderburk said sadly. Shaking his head, "I have never indulged in a book nor heard of a tale that describes something of this... magnitude."
"Now we must decide if we are to go through it, or past it. Whichever one may very welo decide our fate."
The landscape is truly beautiful as the cleric's eyes scan over it. The sunlight has everything sparkling and glittering like some sort of jungle treasure. The area looks totally out of place though, as this many plants would have never survived in this kind of snow on any plane. Nenne wonders what the state of the plant life is in for a moment before her eyes catch a shape under the blanket of snow. It is that of a humanoid shape, but very large. There are two, no three more closer to the size of a man near to it as well. None of these are moving.
The instant she spots the figures in the snow, she shushes the entire group and points toward them. "Be wary, be quiet, and behave," she urges her companions as she inches closer. Calling upon divine insight, she touches her holy symbol and silently petitions Kelemvor to grant her his vision. (Eyes of the Grave)
Nenne inches as close to the wintery area as much as she dares before using her divine power, however, the scan reveals no undead present within her range.
Nenne taps her amulet as she thinks. Turning to the rest, she says, "What say you - is it worthwhile to investigate? The frost giants were searching for winter. I wonder if this is what they meant...I admit deep curiosity about this place and how it can exist. Those plants should be dead, yet they seem to be thriving."
She sneaks a look at the large humanoid figure. "I hate to think what stepping into the snows might do. Perhaps it will take us captive. Still, I am willing to risk it if there is a creature in need. I can teleport myself out if danger emerges, so long as I do not stray too far from the edge."
She looks back at the group and awaits their discussion.
“Well?“ Allister waits for Nenne say anything beyond behaving himself. „Any insights you want to share with us? Can we go on? Whoever is lying motionless under a pile of snow is certainly dead. But that would only incentivize you to take a closer look, right?“ he adds with a smirk.
"I see no reason why we should investigate. Unless a piece of information was to form in there, I suggest we go around. We can't risk our lives again, especially after a short encounter with the flying beasts from before."
Eku nods as Allister and Funderburk make their statements. In agreement with them she says, "I admit my own curiosity, but I can't justify the dangers this may present. Allister is right. Whoever that might be under the snow isn't moving now, and by the looks of that ice, never will again."
"We do not know if they are dead," Nenne says to Allister, arching a golden eyebrow. "They could be trapped and in need of help. I do not know how well I can bear living with that uncertainty. And if they are dead, yes, I would want to inspect them and perform a ritual."
She turns to Funderburk. "We cannot know whether information lies beyond unless we look. Wasn't it you who said that a coward is a man who lacks the courage to do dangerous and unpleasant things?"
"At the very least," she adds after a moment, "I can try to get more information about this place and its dangers."
She closes her eyes and traces a familiar sigil in the air - the same one she used when contacting Horace, and says quietly, "We've encountered an oasis of winter in the jungle. Figures are buried under snow. Are you familiar with it? What happens if we enter?" (Sending)
Funderburk arched his eyebrows. "Don't try to use one's own words against them. I'm not a coward, nor am I foolish. You may proceed on your own accord, but he who is foolish runs into battle unwitted. And I am not going inside that wintry land having no one here know a thing about that place. Whether you want to preform a ritual or not I shall accompany you, but to go in further than that is foolish and unwise- not cowardly."
Funderburk stood there unmoving. "Choose what you want to do. Unlike myself, I would like to keep everybody alive for a little bit longer before we go into uncharted territories."
While the debate about the frozen land rages, Boosey fumbles around in his pack and pulls out his coil of rope. Tying one end round himself he calls to the others. "Lets get this over with. We're going to decide to investigate, so I'll be the first to take a chance. If one of you would care to hold the other end of this while I cross the boundary," he gives a quick grin "it may save me from being whisked away into a different plane." With that he heads down the the edge of the snow line, and waits for one of the party to hold the rope, before taking a deep breath and entering Winter...
Snow crunches under foot as the gnome takes his first few steps into the winterscape. The bard's breath is stolen away as the temperature drops to a low -30F (-34.44C). If the terrain is an illusion, it is quite convincing as Boosey's body is not dressed nor prepared to stay long in that sort of environment. As quickly as he entered the circle, he hops back out unharmed and shivering.
Almost as soon as he enters, the gnome pops back out of the snow line, visibly shaking with the cold. "We'll have to go around", he says to Funderburk. "We wouldn't survive ten minutes in there, the cold is incredible, very little could I'm afraid. I didn't go very far, but at least we know now it's real, and not an illusion." He turns back to the snow. "I'm not going in there again, besides, I don't have any gear that would help me survive."
“So the next step, unless someone has wyas to shield is from frostbite and death, is to avoid this zone of death. Unless one of our spell flingers can summon a fur coat and some warm boots.“
"It seems it's merely a phenomenon of - " she says as Boosey jumps into the snow.
" - winter," she finishes when he jumps out. "Not mystically dangerous, just hazardous to living beings who are not inured to the cold. If you'll permit me, I'd like to perform a rite for the dead. Then we may continue without further delay."
She takes out her prayer book and recites a short liturgy. Making a symbol of scales in the air, she finishes her chant and steps away from the snow. "To Kelemvor's justice I commend these souls. Onward to Mezro, friends. Thank you for your patience."
"I am unable to cast any such spells," he told Allister. "However, going around is like Boosey said the best option. The wintry area isn't even the big so we can make up the time." He looks to Nenne, "I apologize that we cannot to through, but if we were, us-" and he points to Boosey and himself, "-would more like suffer to some extent. Let us go around, and continue on our journey."
