Corinne Hemlock: Dhampir courtesan and dusk huntress Kraig Bronzeaxe: Dwarven archaeologist and guerilla archer
Kaz and Kaz's panther's strikes hit deep, and Evil Vetis screams with fury, ice and frost boiling from the wounds. She falls to her knees, and howling winds, accompanied by snow, explode from her body, temporarily blinding you all.
She doesn't know quite where she is, only that it's very dark, and very cold. The weight of the snow around her is crushing, stifling. She cannot move, cannot see, can barely breathe. She was doing something, before this. Something...important? It was cold there, too. Cold and...loud. That's right. Her mistress was speaking, and then...the winds. The winds drowned her. But how did she get here? Where is here? She supposed there was only one way to find out. But to dig herself out, she needed to know which way was up.
There. To the side, she heard shouts and the roar of fire. Fire, so loud. Useful, in this case. She began slowly burrowing through the snow, up. She'd only been digging a few minutes when the first flash hit.
A couple, living high and alone in the mountains. The woman, pregnant, and late in her term. One night, as they slept, they forgot to close the window, and the winter wind stole in...and stayed.
She kept going, gasping when the flashes continued to come, one after another.
The baby was born, but the couple became ill. They grew colder and colder, an unseen force stealing their warmth and energy. Only days after the child's birth, they lay down one night and did not rise again.
The winter wind, which had stayed in the home and fed on the couple's energy, took corporeal form for the first time in over a month. A woman of ice and snow, fed on the energy of the young couple, stronger. She began to walk towards the door, but paused as the baby's cry sounded through the house. The potential of such a life would feed her for months.
She walked into the room, lovingly decorated with images of the surrounding mountains. She gazed down into the cradle, at the baby in it. She'd stopped crying. Now she gazed up at the goddess with wide, serious eyes. As if she knew.
To another, the gaze of the child might have warmed their heart. But the goddess's heart was ice, and it did not melt or crack. It did, however, consider. And so she reached out with a snowy finger, traced it along the child's face, and watched her touch transform the baby into a creature of winter. And then she waved her hand, and deposited the child in a swirl of snow atop Kelvin's Cairn. Time would tell if this investment paid off. After all, what were twenty years to a goddess?
She kept digging. She was close to the surface now. She could feel the warmth of fire through the thin layer of snow remaining. She was so close-
And then suddenly her world was consumed by pain and fire.
The snow clears, and left in its wake is Vetis, looking normal again. The tiefling is unconscious on the ground, but breathing. As you watch, the icy handprint that has been on her cheek since level 5 melts away, leaving her skin unblemished.
BEHOLD. YOUR POTENTIAL HAS FAILED. THIS IS NOT WHAT WE AGREED. DO NOT SPEAK TO ME OF AGREEMENTS, LORD OF ACHERON! LEAVE HER TO DIE. SHE HAS BEEN DEEMED UNWORTHY. I WILL DECIDE WHAT IS TO BE DEEMED! YOU WILL NOT TAKE HER NOW. HER SOUL WOULD NOT SURVIVE WERE SHE ONE OF US. THEN I AM THANKFUL SHE IS NOT. FOOLISH CHILD. YOU HAVE NO HONOR. NO DISCIPLINE. ENOUGH! WE HAVE BIGGER ISSUES. THE STAR GROWS DARKER. LARGER. WE MUST TRY AGAIN, ALL OF US. WE HAVE FAILED BEFORE! IT TOOK EVERYTHING WE HAD. THE TIME IS NOW. PREPARE YOURSELVES. DO WHAT YOU WILL. I HAVE MY PLANS. SHE NEEDS MORE TIME. MAKE THEM QUICK, ETERNITY IS AT RISK. I WILL NOT FAIL. MY PRIORITIES ARE IN ORDER.
A singular snowflake lands on Vetis's forehead, melting into it.
With a slow recollection, you are completely healed.
You can tell that someone is unhappy, a frustrated preoccupation, regarding your progress and status. It doesn't speak, but you can feel it. Like someone standing next to you from behind, too close. A presence. Annoyed. Begrudging. Wanting to punish, and not just you.
Vellynne peeks from around the corner. "Is..is it safe? Are you guys done beating each other up?"she asks meekly. "My word."the orb flashes. "Such barbaric displays. Adventurers. Tsk tsk tsk."
Lucas blinks, his eyes opening after the blinding light faded. Lowering his arms that he brought to his face, he notices Vetis, laid out on the ground and rushes over. Just as he gets within 10ft of her, however, he recalls that they were indeed fighting a moment ago, and slows down. Standing over her, he holds out a hand while the other holds a shortsword. Tenderly, he looks down at her, while slowly lowering himself down to her level. Prodding her with his hand, he motions to the others that she is indeed out.
"Think we're good."
Once he calls out the all-clear, he would curiously wonder what the hell it was that actually happen, propping the apparently healed Vetis up. He had no hope of carrying her, but he could at least take her weapons and pass her off to someone that could.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Seeing Vetis seeming to be returned to herself, Sobek ends the Heat Metal spell, and steps over to Lucas, resting a hand on his shoulder as he casts Cure Wounds for 10 hp.
’I’ll carry her for now.’ he says, bending down (knees, not back!) to lift her from the floor.
’I think we should probably be leaving the island now, unless Kaz wants to test out the horn on the giants before we leave? I suspect we’ve worn out our welcome, sparse as it was...’
