I'd like to get a Rime of the Frostmaiden game started. This will be my first time DM-ing, but I am playing a PbP game here now and it seems to work well enough. I prefer to roll for ability scores, because I like the randomness of it and I think that low scores can create an interesting dimension to a character - though if you don't roll a score above 15 or have a total below 70 I'll permit a re-roll. Because this would be my first time running a game, I would prefer to stick to PHB races + Goliath.
If you would like to join, post a description of the character you would like to play below, and an explanation of why this character would be in Ten-Towns.
Backstory: Nazcan, as a child, was a dwarf of a dragonborn, criticized for his size his whole childhood. He always dreamed of being giant, so he decided to turn to Bahamut for help, becoming a priest under him, giving prayers every day to be big. After two long years of preying, he grew to large size in his sleep, towering above the common races, towering above the others. However, it still wasn't enough, he one day wants to become a true dragon, so he preys to Bahumut every day, but for now, he uses his large size to protect those who can't protect themselves.
Reason: To continue his quest of becoming a true dragon.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

(Just to be clear, I have a 15 but nothing higher, so reroll? Rerolling just in case, but I will stick with the first one if I misunderstood.)

Ignoring that for now then.
Name: Varis
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Monk
Background: Folk Hero
Brief description: Varis is a good hearted individual who can't stand by when people need help. Even if it means betraying clan secrets. Which has led to his current desire to spend a few decades far from his homeland and mapping the far north seems like a great start.
Reason: Needed to get away from home for a while so accepted a job to map the region and resources of the region. If you need anything else, let me know.
Backstory: Fascinated with the rise and fall of forgotten empires, Avarice pursued a career in digging up the dead. One particular venture into the dust and sand resulted in a curse being triggered, forever bonding her blood to a long-forgotten sorcerer. Looking for a possible cure to break the curse, her travels take her North to Ten-Towns in a last-ditch effort in an otherwise fruitless endeavour.
Reason for Adventuring: Kaillyn is a former soldier turned tracker/bounty hunter. A recent quarry has led to the general location of Ten-Towns and Kaillyn is looking around for any bounties. While an excellent tracker, she is awkward around people and is unlikely to assert herself in a group or crowd.
Abilities: 11123111010
About me: Long-time player, mostly 3.5ed. New to 5ed, but familiar enough with the basic concepts that I won't be too much of a rookie. :)
I would like to join. I can fill any role the party needs but for the purpose of this application, let’s say I’m a Human (Varient) Rogue who has traveled to the region to make his fortune after being banished from his previous home for messing with the wrong noble’s daughter.
Name: Kuori Rock Katho Race: Goliath Class: Fighter Background: Folk Hero
Backstory:
Rock, as he is known by those in Ten-Towns, has lived in the mountains of the Spine of the World all of his life. His people asked him to travel to Ten-Towns many times, for supplies and for trade goods of every sort. This time they asked him to go there to see what he could learn about the endless night that has claimed these lands.
Name: Ruthen Strongboar Race: Hill Dwarf Class: Sorcerer (Draconic) Background: Acolyte Reason for being in Ten-Towns/adventuring: Ruthen, on the run from the priests of Helm (who accused him of burning down the temple), wanted to settle down back in the place where he had lived prior to his parents being killed, to uncover secrets about his past. Little does he know that he actually did start the fire which burned down the temple.
Description: Shayne is an easy going, friendly jack of all trades type. He wears some leather armor but has colorful clothing underneath. Wherever Shayne goes he is warmly welcomed for he always has a song to sing, a story to tell or a card game to draw people into. He has a natural charisma which just makes everyone at the inn or tavern like the guy.
Shayne is also a bit of a huckster though. If he can't beat the card games he cheats. If he can't pay for a round of drinks he slips a few coins out of someone who can. If he's not chased out of town he'll sell a few bottles of Dr. Moxo's Magical Elixir to a few too many gullible town folk on his way out.
Ten-Towns: Shayne MacGee has found himself in Ten-Towns because the last few cities and villages he's visited had become too hot for him and he needed a place to cool off for a while. A natural traveler by trade and profession, Shayne tended to prefer more cosmopolitan cities but when the heat is on one needs to get a little icy.
Race: Variant Human Class: Sorcerer (Shadow) Background: Urchin Reason: Kosef knows very little about himself--most of his life has been lived on the streets of one Ten Town or another, scrambling for food--but he is beginning to wonder if he is magic. His spit, he thinks, is a poison spray. He thinks he can give his enemies frostbite. Maybe he can create bonfires and control flames. Or shockingly grasp someone. The dark is easier to see in. Part of him wants to talk to someone about this, but most of him doesn't trust anyone. He is just a boy and his pet mouse.
Brief Backstory: Fenrick is a local fisher/trapper that can usually be found in Ten Towns selling or buying goods. Usually he like to stay on the outskirts of society, living off of the wilderness, and learning from the animals. However, there some things the wild just can’t provide and so out of necessity he occasionally returns to society. He didn’t want to get wrapped up in all this heroic stuff, but aren’t those the word of every unlikely hero...
(I re-rolled ones once for ability scores. Tell me if I should change that, or need to attach anything else like a character sheet.)
Backstory: Frorean was the youngest among the three children of a middle class family in a town. During his school years, he came across a research talking about necromancy and how life and death works. He was completely absorb by that; thereafter he spend his time researching and study necromancy. Recently, he learnt that there are something happening in Ten Towns which might provide more insight to his study.
Name: Kor Race: Halfling Class-Barbarian Alignment: Chaotic Good Background: Folk hero Backstory: From an early age Kor had a bit of fame in Easthaven. The young halfling became known for his impulsive antics, doing anything for a laugh or attention. It's when he got older when his fame began to take hold. It started when a group of adventurers tried to take advantage of Shiva, a local elderly woman who sold trinkets she made, in the streets. Kor saw what was happening and wasn't having it and the ensuing fight became the most talked about thing in town for a couple of months. As Kor grew older his antics grew bolder and so did his local legend. He rode a wild Caribou into an important Town meeting at the Town Hall, he singlehandedly averted an attack on the town by diverting an Orc Scouting Party to a spot where they faced a pack of hungry winter wolves and it's been said he has stolen the major's favorite pair of shoes on more than 1 occasion. All in all Kor's reputation in Easthaven has been well earned. Now Kor is looking for new thrills and challenges. https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/leapingmountain/characters/35915558

I know you said PhB only, but would you make an exception for the Levistus tiefling from Mordenkainen's? If not, that I will just refluff the regular tiefling as an ice tiefling, but I think the Levistus just fits the theme so nicely....

“I will take responsibility for what I have done. [...] If must fall, I will rise each time a better man.” ― Brandon Sanderson, Oathbringer.
Backstory: Klia has lived with her clan in the Frozenfar since she hatched. She learned to carve out a life in the wilderness among her brothers and sisters, and developed a powerful affinity for the flora and fauna on which they relied for survival. While hunting in the woods with her sister Xendra, they happened upon a half-elf nearly frozen to death. Against the advice of her sister, who felt the boys passing was part of the natural order and should be left alone, Klia carried him to the nearest settlement, Bremen. She did her best to keep him warm, but he did not wake. Distrustful of scalykind since the invasion by the Legion of the Chimera, the townsfolk accused Klia of harming the boy or absconding with him, despite the obvious fact she had brought him to here. The boy recovered, and told of how he had come to be lost in the tundra when his family was attacked by huge winter wolves and fled the caravan trail. When he came to the Shaenarge river, he jumped in and swam for the other side, not looking back until he had crossed and ran as far as his legs could carry him before he collapsed. His parents have not been seen since. A bitterness among her clan was all Klia found when she returned to them, for the soft skinned of ten towns had largely ignored them until this time. Outcast, she returned to Bremen, living in isolation outside of the town. Occasionally, people would spot her in the forest, but in time their opinion of her changed as young Sarren became a part of the town and they understood with time that she had brought him to Bremen. Still, she will not live among them, a feeling of distrust li.gers and her affinity for the wilderness has only grown stronger in her solitude.
