"I was at the church working" Caliban answers. "See my father was imprisoned and my mother could not handle nine children. I was one of the few she turned over to the church. Basically and indentured servant till I was old enough to go out on my own. But it was not all bad, they saw some potential in me and provided me training and this gear I have now. So here I am ready to serve the good of the people," he lifts his Warhammer "and crack a few heads when needed."
Bayard frowns momentarily as something occurs to him, "Wait, didn't we get rooms at the other tavern? Do we want to head back and actually use them or just stick around here? Either way, pass that bottle."
Allorian is tired from a long journey and what turned out to be quite the interesting day. "At risk of sounding like a bore I am heading to the Whale to retire for the night. Let's meet here with Rhasor in the morning." I will settle up the tab with Mavi and leave a 1 gold tip for her.
Mavi took the coin from Allorian and said "Thank ya sir! Come back, we'll take good care of you."
The party encounters no one on their trek back to the Whale, although a couple of year swear a ship could be seen out on the bay, but, a second look didn't show any trace of a ship, and those who didn't see it initially, never saw it. Was it the mind playing tricks because of the ghost story? Were the pirates about this evening? Was it Hagarall's ship floating out in the harbor?
In your rooms in the inn, sleep (and booze) quickly took hold, with the crew sleeping soundly until morning.
ooc I'll give everyone a chance to post anything they want to do in the morning before meeting up with Rhasor at the Mermaid.
In the morning, the party assembles and walks from the Whale to the Mermaid. In the Mermaid, Rhasor is waiting there with two other men. He introduces the two men with him as Serzor and Brue. Serzor is a man in his mid- to late 50s, with dark hair streaked with gray. Brue is a half-elf, with brown hair and green eyes. Unlike the older men, Brue has a bow over his shoulder and a short sword on his hip.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Brue turns and says “My father’s boat is ready to take us across the river.”
The half-elf leads the group out to the docks near the Mermaid. These docks are substantially smaller than the docks that Allorian, Bayard, and Xarrut are familiar with, only built to accommodate family owned fishing boats rather than ocean going cargo ships. On this morning, there are only two boats left at the dock, with one of the boats apparently undergoing some repairs at the moment. Three individuals can be seen moving about the other boat, apparently getting it ready to sail. As the group gets closer to the dock, it can be seen that the trio consists of a human in his late 40s and two half-elves that appear to be around Brue’s age.
The boat will be fairly crowded with the entire party that is boarding it. Once everyone has boarded, the female half-elf pulls in the gangway, while Brue and the other male half-elf untie the boat from the cleaths before jumping back on board. Two large sweeps are used to propel the boat away from the docks, but, soon a sail is raised and the boat heads northward toward the mouth of Gilles River. Once into the river, the boat continues to use the sails, but, the sweeps are again put to use, with the three half-elves rotating using of the sweeps as they up the maze of channels that comprise the delta.
Flocks of birds can be seen in the foliage along the channel, an alligator is spotted by Caliban, while others observe small rodents on the bank and a few fish heads poking out of the water.
Maybe an hour and a half after leaving the docks in Alderey, the boat pulls up next to a stone dock on the north side of the river. Brue and his brother Zirdo jump off the boat to tie it up to a couple metal posts sticking up out of the deck. Once the boat is securely tied, their sister, Mia, lowers the gangway so that the passengers can get off.
Rhasor stops to talk briefly to Thojon, Brue’s father, telling him “Thanks for taking the time to transport us here. We appreciate you sacrificing a day of fishing out in the bay to help us.”
“It’s not a problem. We need to get the children back. And, we can do a bit of fishin’ here while waiting for you to return.
As you exit the boat, you can see that the docks are comprised of large blocks of white stone, with the remains of two large buildings sitting north of the docks. The entire area is heavily overgrown, with shrubs and small trees dominating close to the river, and larger trees visible further from the river.
Brue grabs a staff from the boat before joining the party on the dock.
OOC Set your marching order. Brue will be leading, with Rhazor and Serzor in the middle.
Caliban speaks up "I am willing to take whatever position is needed for the party. I have been told I am not the most observant person around, but I can track if needed."
Brue starts to lead the group away from the dock, as the group gets near the edge of the brick surface, he turns and says "Be sure to follow in my path. There are places where there is a thin layer of plants growing over a deep pool of water. Those of you wearing armor might find yourself at the bottom of the swamp in a single step. And, there are things living in the water you don't want to mess with." With that, he turns and begins walking out into the swamp, probing in front of him with his staff.
The group moves slowly through the swamp, with the half-elf regularly diverting his path around some obstacle or other. At several points, streams are encountered, which Brue will walk upstream or downstream until he finds some way across them, usually a tree tilted across the river, with some of the trees used as bridges still alive. About the time the sun is nearing its highest point in the sky, the party enters a small glade. When the party is entirely within the glade, the undergrowth at the edges of the glade erupt, revealing the presence of seven bullywugs and three giant frogs. The bullywugs all wield spears and nets, with the spears pointing menacingly at the party. Brue immediately lifts his hands up to show they are empty of any weapons.
