If Balgrim is MIA, what should we do going forward? - Single Choice
Shall we seek a 6th party member? - Single Choice
(Is Balgrim gonna respond to Edna/Thomas?)

Balgrim
(OOC: Sorry. I missed the question in that exchange.)
Balgrim answers, "I dinna have any skills, but am willin' ta help in any capacity. Maybe I ken perform menial tasks around tha temple and serve tha faith. If I be lucky I may learn somethin' along tha way."
Gulgus Stormbrew - Dwarf, Druid (5), Circle of the Shepherd - Dreams Into Journey
Thomas speaks up as he starts clearing the table of empty dishes. It's clear that Thomas and Edna have been married for many years, they're able to coordinate despite their vastly different body types like it's the most natural thing in the world.
"Yon might want tae tagalong with yer friends t'see sister Daar, then. M'sure she'll point yon to the right way." he says to Balgrim, then thinks of something.
"Yon strike me as a reader. Any interest in history?" he asks, an odd sparkle in the gnome's eyes.
As Thomas strikes up a conversation with Balgrim, Edna leans over to Leon.
"Tomorrow we begin your training. At least, for the basics. I haven't been in service for many years, but I can still teach you the foundations of swordsmanship. Get some rest. You're going to need it."
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
Balgrim
Balgrim looks at Thomas with an eyebrow raised in interest, "Aye! Me grandpappy used ta say, 'If ye be ignorant of history, ye remain forever a child'."
Gulgus Stormbrew - Dwarf, Druid (5), Circle of the Shepherd - Dreams Into Journey
Thomas grins a gnomish grin that grins grinningly in the grinmoire.
"Well then, since yon had quite th'day already, I'll letchun to some rest. But when yon through yon business with th' dear sister, I think I might 'ave somethin' to look into for yon, master dwarf." he says, patting Balgrim on the shoulder.
The group undoubtedly retires to the stable for the night, which is comfortable enough. While it's no three star establishment, the blanket and soft straw is a welcome comfort after the trying day and a half they've had. So much has happened, it doesn't seem real.
Kina acts as a group pillow while the young ones recover their strength.
(Day 2)
(Party condition: good)
(Party assets: 2 practice swords, 67 SP, 1 purse, 1 silver cup (not fenced or appraised), a length of frayed twine (probably garbage now) a pouch, 2 coats, a whittling knife, and some night clothes.)
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
Four hours later, his trance finished, Aelar rises, stretches, and puts the locket about his neck to keep it safe until he can deliver it to Sister Daar...or rather give it Darna to deliver. He would go with the half-orc girl, of course, so would Hyre and probably Balgrim. But they would all be asleep for a few hours yet, while he was wide awake and needed something to do. Moving quietly out of the barn, he moves about the farm, seeing what there is to see, studying the stars, and pondering what had happened to them all.
His thoughts turn to his family, his cousin Valinnar and her husband Xallon. They'd been so good to him after his parents died, comforting him through his grief while at the same time not overly indulging him, giving him just a few days to wallow in his misery before chivying him up to do chores around the house and, later, in Xallon's silver shop. He smiled with rueful fondness as he remembered the day Xallon had calmly put him over his knee for having delivery ruined a silver spoon Xallon had been working on, he barely 30 years older than Aelar's own 80. Spankings were not things elves generally did, but Xallon had done it, holding the elven youth down easily while he administered the discipline. Even as it happened, as the tears of rage and then shame had rolled down his cheeks, Xallon had not raised his voice or ever seemed angry. He'd always been that way...when a job needed doing, he did it. It was one of the things Aelar's father had most liked about the elf who'd married his favorite (well only) niece. When it was over, Xallon hadn't said a word about, just set him to fixing the spoon (which he'd done as best he could, though not well).
Valinnar hadn't mentioned it either, though he knew the two had no secrets. But that night, as he'd mediated through his trance, he'd realized that the tears of rage and shame had been about rage at himself, shame that he'd let his grief hurt someone else. That had been the last time. Oh, he'd lashed out more over the next few months of course. It wasn't as if his grief had miraculously disappeared, but he'd never again done it deliberately, or with the intent to cause pain.
Almost unconsciously, he reached inside to that new place (was it that new?), not sending any sort of message, just exploring it, trying to learn more about it. Aelar allowed his emotions, the grief and sense of loss at losing Valinnar and Xallon, the gratitude for the friends he had left, the refuge they'd found, the help they'd received, the despair at knowing the fate of his family and all the others, and wonder of what was happening to sort of be...accesible to that place, in case anyone wanted to know what he was feeling. Aelar wasn't looking for a response. He just wanted to share. He also tried to 'sense' the sigil on his chest, see if it was somehow linked to the place inside.
ooc: DM, please feel free to do anything or nothing with this. Just wanted to do something to cover the hours between the end of his trance and the other's sleep.
Tandor the White, Human Life Cleric
(I do appreciate snips of info like this, gives me more to work with.)
Everyone:
The next morning, the group rises, refreshed. Thomas Goodwin has a gift for his guests, personal journals for the lot of them, with a complimentary Goodwin writing quill. "Guaranteed not to spill, rip your paper or accidentally kill" as he says. (I fully encourage you all to write journal entries so I can get a better sense of what to throw your character's way) But such luxuries will have to wait.
Thomas puts Aelar and anyone else who wants to do farm work through the day's chores. It's tough physical labour, but the group feels good enough that they can push themselves (remember you need to successfully roll a DC OVER the stat you're trying to increase) if they don't mind being tired and sore afterwards (You can always save your 'extra effort' for activities outside of work. If they push themselves now, they will be 'exhausted' and won't be able to put forth the extra effort for the day (No rolling to increase anything else unless they're contesting their rolls against another person)
Farm work can increase your STR or CON AND animal handling. Lazlo, because he was given a specific chore more in tune with his abilities, can increase his CHA or DEX AND improve his animal handling and performance skill.
Edna is ready for Leon at the crack of dawn. He wakes up with his practice sword next to him. Edna may be getting on in years, but the way she holds her practice sword, he can tell she's highly disciplined and has years of experience. His swordsmanship training will give him 10/50 points towards fighter, a chance to gain a point in longsword proficiency, and a chance to gain a success towards his STR and either CON or DEX.
Kina excuses herself early in the morning to speak to the Guiston Watch about Hon's fate, and Barna arrives at the farm, only to be drafted into work by a fast-talking Thomas.
Working on the farm and Leon's sword training will last for 8 hours, so when they're finished, it will be about 3 PM.
(Also, can everyone assign themselves a colour? I'm going to colour-code any action specific to a person to make it easier to pick out what's happening to your character specifically)
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
(Leon will take Red.)
A night's rest has left Leon vigorous and ready for his instruction. Awaking at dawn, he takes his wooden practice sword and hefts it in his right hand, appreciating the unfamiliar weight of the training weapon.
To Edna, "I'm ready. What do I do first?"

ooc: ok, so if I want to improve an ability the DC is my current score, and if I roll over it there is a chance for improvement. For me the DC would be 14 if I am trying to improve my Dex and 17 if I'm trying to improve my Cha. I would roll that in the thread here I am guessing. Is there a roll associated with improving my animal handling and performance skill as well?

Balgrim
(OOC: I've been using blue.)
After Balgrim wakes he checks in with Aelar, Hyre, and Darna on when they are going to make their trip to see Sister Daar.
Gulgus Stormbrew - Dwarf, Druid (5), Circle of the Shepherd - Dreams Into Journey
ooc: Aelar will continue with orange.
"Thank you, Sir. I will cherish this gift." He'd never been much of a journaler before but he had an inkling that might change in the near-future.
After watching the hand Thomas assigned to teach him chopping wood for a few minutes. It's new to him, working muscles he is unaccustomed to using and without the gloves loaned to him, would have left his hands chaffed and blistered. But after a few strokes he gets the rhythm, swinging the axe with power and precision, his nature dexterity aiding him in this. The hand remains for a while, giving pointers on technique, helping him work out an efficient process, then leaves him to it
When the bell sounds for breakfast, Aelar is surprised to see the decent pile he's made and that the sun shows it to be the second or third hour after dawn. Stripping off the gloves, he pours some water over his head, washes his face and hands, drinks some, then heads to the meal. After, he returns to the wood chopping for a couple of hours until another hand grabs him to assist with quilhogs. After the noon meal, Aelar feels a pleasant lethargy in his muscles along with some not inconsiderable aches. He knows this to be the price and reward of a hard day's labor and welcomes both.
As the signal to end the day's work rolls across the farm, Aelar goes in search of the others. Finding them, he shares the tale of his day, ending with "I think our first stop of the afternoon should be buying some clothes and shoes. Then I think Hyre, Barna and Balgrim and I should find Sister Daar and return her locket. Then I can ask her some questions. The rest of you are welcome to come. What do you all say?"

" I'd be interested in getting some clothes- yes. Maybe we can walk by the minstrels that were visiting town? I think they play on the corner outside of the Horseshoe Saloon?" Lazlo says. He had fun working with the Quillhogs today- and he even had a favorite one, he nicknamed 'Fuzzy Lumpkin'.

Edna looks to Leon, holding her sword in a relaxed way, her eyes calm.
"The very first lesson you need to learn is to not react." she states, and swings her sword, stopping just short of hitting him in the eye.
"When you simply react, you give away your intention. Every movement must have purpose, not dictated by instinct. Discipline is a sword fighter's best friend. It masks your intention, it removes unnecessary movement, and it hastens response. If you are disciplined and calm, you can more easily read the intentions of your opponent, anticipate, and counter." Edna says.
"You flinched when I thrust, and I could tell which direction you want to move in. Because I can tell that, I know what I need to do next, and you are caught in a death spiral of reacting to my movements. You must maintain control or you will be drawn into the will of your opponent. Instead of a reactive, reflexive movement in response to my action, you must have the composure to respond to my action. A single, calculated response...." she says, raising Leon's sword to her armpit, to show that if he simply held out his sword when she attempted to do the thrust towards his eye that she would have impaled herself, "Is worth a hundred reactive moves."
Edna drills Leon not only on basic sword swings and stances but also encourages him to figure out the difference between a feint and an attack meant to connect.
(Roll for your attempts to learn, WITH ADVANTAGE.)
(You roll in-thread, yes. Skill successes are simply a DC of 13. And yes, you would need to roll higher than your DEX to get a success towards increasing it (as the better you are at something, the harder it is to get even BETTER) but there may be circumstances where I will judge whether or not you should have advantage, such as having someone teach you, rather than doing solo study.)
When Aelar is finished with his work, he's exhausted and sweaty, but feels like he had a lot of wasted effort in the day, and found the animals particularly stubborn. Thomas still congratulates him on a day's hard work and gives him 5 SP for his labour and also a hearty meal.
Thomas also 'treats' Aelar to being exposed to a surprise; Thomas is apparently a collector of rare and strange slimes which he keeps in his basement. He throws a slime onto Aelar when he's not looking which sucks away the sweat and grime he worked up. He feels clean, as are his night clothes.... even if he feels a little strange for the experience.

Leon pants hard, exhausted from the toil of his training. Edna was a superb fighter, able to anticipate and counter his every move.
I have to stop reacting, he tells himself, and take the initiative!
During the combat, Leon has an idea. Taking Edna's lessons to heart, Leon suddenly slumps down onto the ground, clutching his ankle in pain.
"Ah, I must've sprained it!"
If/when Edna comes over to assist him, he will suddenly lunge at her with his wooden practice sword and continue the fight.

(Can I stay with black? It was actually my original intent. If not I'll take another.)
As Hyre wakes up, he plays the events of the last day in his head. He may be able to process and sometimes even understand others' emotions, but only simple ones. Whatever happened with Barna last night... he isn't capable of understanding her. He's generally confused the entire day, something that might be seen by slower reactions, even less talk than usual and day-dreaming. Thus, he doesn't object much when pushed to do farmwork, even though that wasn't his plan.

(Sry, got confused. DC 12 for str and DC 13 as normal for HA.)
When he's done, Hyre will look for Aelar and Barna. They need to bring that thing back to the priestess.
(Oh, and I didn't quite get why would we want to push ourselves, other than RP ofc. Is there any benefit to that?)
