If Balgrim is MIA, what should we do going forward? - Single Choice
Shall we seek a 6th party member? - Single Choice
Kallista's first customer is some bewildered-looking young servant girl. She just sort of stares at all the herbs on the shelves and seems totally lost. When she sees Kallista, she shyly approaches her and just hands her a note with the name of the herb she's looking for. It's written in a shaky hand, like the one who wrote it was shivering intensely, so it's only half-legible. She's going to need to ask some questions to get a better idea of what she needs.
The girl looks up at Kallista's wings and at the various strange objects in Grimbuld's shop and her eyes become wide. She steps back, but doesn't run out of the store.
Hana purses her lips as Hyre asks her about Hon.
"Hmmm, can't say I have. I haven't left this town in years. Oh wait! Right, that Kina filly came by for some rations, said she was heading to some town with the Watch." she answers. It's only then that she puts two and two together.
"Oh... I'm sorry. Y'all from Hon, then." she says, resuming her cooking.
She's preparing a number of folded meat pies to be cooked so they can be hastily reheated for customers. She decides to change the subject abruptly.
"C'mere, let's see if y'all can do better with some direct help. I'll take y'all through this step by step." she says, beckoning him over to work side by side with her, and showing him the finer points of pastry making and how to tell when things are done without burning them.
((Roll a DC 12 against your INT. If you pass, roll for cooking again WITH advantage.))
Barna looks a little doubtful at Aelar.
"You don't need to head to the Nest for knowledge, you know... but I take it you've already exhausted other options. You and Hyre are a lot alike in that once you set your mind to something, you just plow on ahead." she observes.
She goes quiet and concentrates on stirring the linens some more, then looks over at him.
"Whatever it is you're planning to do, I mean, after you find what you're looking for... I want to join you, when Kina gets back. Would that be all right with you?" she asks, suddenly.
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
"Hi," Kallista smiles, "I'm Mr. Grimbuld's assistant. Um," she looks at the note, "I'm sorry, but could you describe what you need the herb for? I'm having a hard time reading this." She smiles apologetically.

(Wouldn't INT be 14? 12 would be either WIS or STR for Hyre.)
Hyre nods quietly when she understands his reference to Hon, but is happy to get another chance at actually making the food.
INT: 11.

The high-elf nods. "Yes, I have, Barna," he replies. "And what doy ou mean by 'join'?" he asks.

The girl shrinks back a bit, but doesn't retreat any further.
"My papa isn't well." she murmurs. "He can't get out of bed."
The girl is clearly scared, and probably very shy on top of that. "He came here before, but there was a scary man here. My papa let me wait outside..." she says in a very small voice.
Kallista is going to need some more information before she can even hope to guess which herb the girl needs.
((You're not rolling to improve your INT, you're just seeing if you can pass to get another shot at getting a success for cooking, which you did))
Hyre gets a much better idea of how to cook while Hana directly assists him and talks all the while about the secrets of cooking.
"A lot of it is just practice and remembering. Once you've cooked something once, y'all just have to be paying attention to what you smelled and for how long. It's why I have our tavern minstrels play a lot of the same songs when it's meal time; I know when a song is done, then that means a certain amount of time has already passed and I can check things. When in doubt, though, always trust yer nose. If it smells good enough to eat, give it just a little longer to be sure it's done all the way through. Timing all the parts of a meal to be finished together, though, is what separates a cook from a chef." she says with a bit of pride.
Hyre's efforts lead him to bring out a batch of four golden brown fold-over meat pies.
"Well looky there! You made a right fine pasty!" Hana cheers him, thumping him on the back.
"If y'all can learn all the recipes on our menu, I'll letcha be my kitchen assistant. The other girls are hopeless with a knife, an' their tits give em' enough tips, so they don't even bother to try. It'd be a real breath o' fresh air to have real help in here. We'd call your rent square and I'll even pay y'all 8 SP a day on top... so keep it up!"
((If Hyre is going to push himself at work, you can roll your investigation against a DC 13 check, and if you succeed, you can give yourself advantage to your cooking skill roll. Once he has full proficiency in cooking, he'll have learned all the recipes at the tavern and if you build yourself to a full proficiency in research--which you have 2/3 successes for, Hyre can attempt to come up with new recipes by performing a successful cooking and research roll against a DC 15.))
Barna takes a while to answer, before she looks over to Aelar, blushing again.
"I don't... want you to leave me behind. Outside of Sister Daar, you and Hyre and the others... you're the only people who've given me a fair chance, treated me like I'm not... just another hopeless street rat. And I want to make it up to you for lying to you. If I'm serious about learning the way of Draco, I have to make that right by helping you in any way I can." she states.
"I was studying up on medicine as much as I could before I met you two. It certainly came in handy the other day, so I won't be dead weight." she says.

"Okay," Kallista nods, "just take a deep breath. Do you know what it looked like?"

(Maybe Hyre's feat from being a human will be Chef, who knows? Edit: Maybe not.)
Inspired by his recent success, Hyre chooses to push himself further. Besides, he only planned to help Geoffrey around the house and introduce him to Lazlo - nothing that requires too much of his energy (I think?).

Hana comforts Hyre with a pat on the shoulder as she looks upon the ruin that was once fine ingredients, now unrecognizable as anything but an obscene charcoal abstract sculpture.
"They can't all be masterpieces. Maybe that's enough for today. Go on, y'all earned yer keep. Y'all already made a few orders worth of food, saves me a bunch of trouble." she says. Hyre earned 8 SP today.
The girl shakes her head.
"I didn't look inside last time papa was here." she squeaks out, and out of the corner of her eye, catches sight of Grimbuld's hanging spider cloak. The girl backs up against a shelf, her eyes wide.

(I know. It's just that, for some reason, the site requires me to reload between posting and editing, and if I edit, again before another edit. On the computer, it doesn't bother me but on mobile, it's quite a nuisance so I just do everything ahead and ignore what's not relevant.)
Hyre looks down on his latest creation, the odour of it stinging his nose. The feelings of disappointment and frustration were not new to him and as always he had no control over them. "Yes, you're probably right. Maybe a good night's sleep on an actual bed will help and improve my performance tomorrow. Maybe." Not that he believed it would matter, but he had nothing else to say that came to mind. "Thank you for all your help though, I'll come again tomorrow."
(Not that I want Hyre to be Bipolar but he just comes out to be this way.)
Hyre's mood is down. He goes out of the saloon and leans on the building's wall, waiting for Lazlo. He's standing in a place where he can see people who come and go - so he doesn't miss Lazlo when he comes - but far enough from the door so that people won't mistake him for guarding the door or anything of sorts. When Lazlo arrives, regardless of when it actually happens (even if Lazlo arrives before he actually exits the saloon), Hyre peels himself off the wall and approaches him. "Was almost about to leave without you. Let's go." He then leads the way or at least tries to, to Geoffrey's house.

Lazlo meets Hyre at the saloon and asks him about his workday as they head towards Sir Geoffrey's home.

"My workday? Not great. I did manage to make a few meat-pies that seemed about edible but also turned other things to the remains of a campfire. Well, it seems like I was good enough at preparing the ingredients that she didn't throw me out of the kitchen, at least. How was your day?"
Varielky
"I helped with the turnips and rutabagas at the farm. It was some real salt of the earth stuff. An honest day for an honest pay and whatnot. So tell me about Sir Geoffrey- should I bow on one knee? can I make eye contact? I've never met a Knight before..."

Kallista nods, doing her best to keep the girl calm, "Alright, how about you father. Does he have a fever? Is he shaking a lot? Did he tell you what herbs he wanted? Or did he just write it down."

Leon shows up around this time as well, having saved his strength to learn from Sir Geoffrey, if he's willing. It's mid-afternoon, there's plenty of daylight left.
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
Though he's not sure whether Lazlo is joking or asking sincerely, Hyre ponders his question thoughtfully. His first meeting with Geoffrey was not a standard one and after that... he pretty much treated him the same way he would any older man of higher standing. He tries to think back but doesn't remember his mother teaching him anything about talking to knights. She probably never thought he'll meet one, or maybe didn't even know herself. Oh, there's so much he will have to tell her if they ever rescue her. He's sure she'll be proud of... at least some of his connections with other people.
Realising Lazlo is still waiting for an answer, he tries to form one. "I'm not sure. I didn't do any of these but our first meeting wasn't exactly formal either. He's also expecting an Elf, not a Satyr. I didn't know you'd come nor did I know Aelar won't. Anyway, you should probably be able to read the situation better than me. I don't think bowing is necessary nor do I think eye contact would disturb him more than it would any other person you'd meet. Also, I can't even try to imagine what kind of relationship would develop between the two of you. Just ah... try not to drop frogs into his cup or anything, I'm sure he won't be happy about that."
(Ah, totally forgot about Leon. Hyre leads both of them, of course.)

Aelar pulls the bandages out of the slime and gives Barna his full attention. He doesn’t think she’s hiding anything but she’d tried before. It seemed more general lack of trust with other people than a malicious intent. Still, he wondered if she was being completely truthful with him.
Insight 19
Tandor the White, Human Life Cleric
Far as Aelar can tell, Barna is completely sincere.
What Aelar's insight also tells him is that some of the slime that got on her wasn't totally wiped off and is sucking the pigment out of her hair. It streaks a blonde stripe down her raven-black hair.
Barna hasn't noticed at all and takes the bandages to a trough with multiple faucets to rinse clothes off with.
"I don't know how the others feel about me, but... do you trust me? Would you vouch for me if the others are unsure? I just want to help... and get this guilt off my chest. If it's not alright, just tell me. I wouldn't blame you." she says.
The girl's eyes are transfixed on the spider cloak. She seems unable to concentrate with its dead eyes staring at her. Maybe if she could see it's just some clothes, it'll calm her down.
"Um... umm..." she stammers, unable to take her eyes off of it. She's torn between needing to get the herbs and her fear. The store is dimly lit so a young mind could easily imagine a lot of terrible things lurking in the shop's corners.
Leon laughs a bit at the memory, then nudges Lazlo.
"The knights were disbanded so he probably doesn't really hold any special status anymore... I think we'll be fine if we just respect what he did for the years he served. Besides, I think he'll be grateful to hear that Hana still cares about him."

Kallista looks over to the cloak, then approaches the girl. "Don't worry, it doesn't bite. I promise. How about we go to a brighter part of the store? You want to help your papa don't you?"

Aelar wonders if he does trust her. She hadn't lied exactly...well, she had but more of withholding of information than an outright lie.
"I think it's too soon to talk about trust, Barna. But I think you have earned the chance to prove yourself, and that's what I'll tell the others. But I have no idea what we're all doing. I've got some big stuff coming up, Balgrim's left us to become a dwarven cleric, we're all finding a place here. I know what I want to do, and I'm pretty sure what Hyre wants to do, but the others, well, things have been so busy we haven't really talked about it. And, no, I'm not going to tell you what Hyre wants, or what I think he wants. You need to ask him, but not any time soon. As for me, it's too public to talk about it here. Let's finish up and get back. I've got a date with Hawk's Nest."
