Matthias thanks the innkeeper and suggests to Karl (OOC: I think Karl is the only other character there, right?) that they head over to visit the Captain of the Guard at the Council Hall.
Those of you heading to the Captain of the Guard meet up in the street on the way and then find the Council Hall easily enough. This two-story stone structure is near the center of town, and it's a plain, no-nonsense affair, without any frills or decorative details put into the construction. A pair of guards are stationed at the large double-door entrance, but they merely eye you as you push open the doors and enter. Inside is a square room with a door to the left, a door to the right, and two doors in the far wall. Sitting behind a small desk between the two far doors is a young man, who looks up at you expectantly.
Matthias smiles and nods not quite deferentially at the young man. "Good day sir!" he says brightly, for the moment at least falling back on the old meet-and-greet methods he learned in the family business, when he was still a part of it. "It's my understanding that I might find the Captain of the Guard here. My colleagues and I are interested in assisting with any work that might require people with certain...abilities. I'd be most appreciative if you could assist us."
(I should have rolled some of this into the previous post, still trying to get the pacing right for PBP, this post will propel things along a bit)
The young man says, "Firstly, his title is 'Sheriff'. Second, I'm afraid he's in a meeting at the moment. It shouldn't take long, if you care to--"
As he says this, the door that was to your right when you entered the building opens, and three haggard and travel-worn dwarves emerge, followed by a large dark-skinned man.
"Oh!" says the young man, and he stands up. "Here you are, the sheriff's meeting is finished. Sir," he says, addressing the large man. "Looks like these are some adventurers, here to see you."
The dwarves, who had been about to exit the building, pause at this and turn to look at you in some surprise. The large man strides forward to greet you, offering each of you a strong-gripped handshake, as he says, "What perfect timing! I'm Sheriff Markham Southwell, and if you're looking for a job, there's one that just came up. But perhaps these dwarves could tell it better."
The dwarves approach you eagerly. They are a ragtag bunch. They introduce themselves as:
-Hruna; she speaks for the group in a voice made raspy by years of smoking. She has lost her right ear and two fingers to frostbite.
-Korux; he stares at you in silence and doesn't say anything (Hruna introduces him). He's lost the tip of his nose to frostbite.
-Storn; he appears nervous and keeps glancing up at the ceiling.
Hruna: "We're the survivors of a group of dwarves tasked with delivering a sled of iron ingots to Bryn Shander. A yeti surprised us and killed a member of our group. The rest of us fled as the yeti tore poor Oobok apart. Now we need someone to go back and get the sled for us. Is this a job you can accomplish for us?"
Auraani finally enters the bakery as Variety is buying her food. She walks up and keeping her voice a low whisper says, "So I found out there is someone in this town killing people every lottery night!"
Ssej moves to the corner and waits for Matthias to answer as he seems to enjoy the sound of his voice and more importantly he is good at it. Chuckling to himself, most people Ssej "talks" are quick to speak and leave the lizards presence as quickly as they can.
((Sorry, I was a little under the weather yesterday. Only awake for five hours so didn't manage to clamber online.)) Karl watches Matthias question the innkeeper, quietly impressed. The unassuming human had a way with words. Maybe I should ask him to manage my smithy when I get started. Within minutes they had a lead on local crime, possible work, and the location of the captain of the guard. It had taken Karl hours just get a simple ‘hello’ when he had first arrived in Ten Towns.
He follows Matthias’ lead as Ssej meets up with them, but remains silent as he mulls over this ‘serial killer’. He was surprised it hadn’t been dismissed as ‘the will of Auril’ or some such nonsense.
Inside the hall, he tries to commit all these names to memory. He had little energy for socialization and faces, especially not for people he’d never see again. At the mention of iron ingots, his eyes flicker to the dwarves, his interest piqued. They had taken a beating, certainly, but they had left their bounty. If they had iron, what could they give as a reward. He needed more information, though, and as his desire for context grabs hold of his tongue, he begins to blurt out his questions.
“Has this ‘yeti’ moved on? Do you think it waits in ambush? What is the pay for such work? What is a yeti?”

“A yeti is a terrible beast of the tundra, built like a man but much larger and more powerful, even bigger than your hulking lizard friends here. They are well acclimated to the cold and like to stalk their prey during blizzards. They are covered in white fur and are difficult to spot. It is also whispered that to look in the face of a yeti is to feel the chill of winter in your very bones. As I mentioned before, this one ripped poor Oobok limb from limb as the rest of us fled, probably to eat him. I’m sure it has moved on at this point. And the blizzard has passed, as well.”
Dwarf Storn keeps glancing nervously at the ceiling during this exposition. Dwarf Korux just stares at you all.
“As for payment, we are prepared to offer each of you a bloodstone worth 50 gold pieces.”
Matthias listens to the dwarf's account of what happened--as well as the rather disturbing description of this yeti creature. The offer of a 50 gold piece gem was too tempting, though, as Matthias was getting low on funds to say the least...
"This is an intriguing opportunity," Matthias says."Just a couple of...clarifying questions if you will. How far is the sled from town? And just how heavy is it? I am not without certain useful talents, but unfortunately pulling heavy sledges laden with iron is not one of them. But some of my associates are much stronger, I'm sure."
“We’ve come from the valley below Kelvin’s Cairn. If you head straight for Kelvin’s Cairn then you should see the sled within 4 hours’ walking. The attack occurred in a depression among four—”
She’s interrupted by Storn tugging at her sleeve.
She turns to him and snaps, “Moradin’s beard, pull yourself together, there are no dragons in here, so quit your twitching!”
Storn flinches with an upward glance at the mention of a dragon, then shakes his head and whispers something to Hruna as he points at your footwear.
Hruna nods and says, “That’s a good point. Adventurers, do you have snowshoes?”
(you don’t)
Hruna says, “Allow us to purchase some for you. Your journey will take longer without them. We will be right back.”
The dwarves shuffle out, leaving you with the clerk and Sheriff Southwell. He smiles at you and says, “Well, they’re a bit addled but seem nice enough, helpful. But was there something else you wanted to discuss?”
The clerk chuckles and shakes his head. "Chwingas? Heh heh, adventurers get the strangest notions..."
But Sheriff Southwell glares at him and says, "Not so strange. I've seen chwingas, Artie, they're real. Though I haven't seen any around here, not recently... I think Bryn Shander is too big, too many people, too much subjugation of the natural environment. You might see 'em at the edges of one of the smaller towns, or out in the wilderness."
"I'd like to thank you for your help in this matter. It's my belief that Bryn Shander, and all of Ten-Towns, can benefit from an adventuring band of do-gooders like yourselves. Life's pretty dark, these days, and it's nice to know that some people, like yourselves, haven't given in to despair. If you bring the sled here then my men and I can connect it with the dwarves and see that you get your reward."
"Now then," he continues, addressing the clerk, "Artie, I'll be out of the office for the rest of the day, I'm sure, on an investigation, so you'll have to reschedule appointments and take messages."
Auraani is full of excitement and energy from her encounter with the woman earlier. She had done well and pulled off being someone she wasn't. She had never done that before, and the threat of possibly being caught was thrilling for some odd reason. "This woman told me that her husband told her..." She thinks for a moment making sure she is saying it right, then shakes her head, "No, her friend's husband, who runs a tavern on the south side of town.... or was it just South Side? Anyways, the friend's husband said there was a victim found this morning. Someone is murdering people on the night of the lotteries. That can't just be coincidence can it? We need to find the others and get more information!"
"I agree, we can do thiss missssion alongsside our ssearch of the ssmaller townss in the area for our prizze. We sshould sspend night here and head out in the morning, ass I am not going to sspend the night out in the open if I can help it." Ssej replies.
((It only took like two hours to get to Bryn Shander, and we left first thing in the morning, right. So it's probably noon at the latest?))
Karl accepts his pair of snowshoes. They all looked to be the same size, causing him to cast a dubious glance at Ssej's decidedly unusual feet.
"I am willing to assist in this search. If we leave now we should be able to return before midnight. But if you all think it best to leave tomorrow, that is fine. I can use today to look around the town. I would like to find some manner of smithy and perhaps a place to restock."

Ssej hisses in agreement.
Hruna explains the location to you:
“We’ve come from the valley below Kelvin’s Cairn. If you head straight for Kelvin’s Cairn then you should see the sled within 4 hours’ walking. The attack occurred in a depression among four—”

Matthias looks to Ssej. "Perhaps if we do retrieve that sled we shall see some Chingwas along the way. Another good reason to accept this mission."
He looks to the others who've accompanied him. "What say you?"
OOC: Karl, Nazcan, Ssej, and Matthias are the ones here, right?
The dwarves return with 4 pairs of snowshoes, which they hand out to the four of you.
The sheriff says,
"I'd like to thank you for your help in this matter. It's my belief that Bryn Shander, and all of Ten-Towns, can benefit from an adventuring band of do-gooders like yourselves. ((Ooc: sorry ive been busy today.))
Variety nods, and thanks the women for her food before taking her leave. "What? What's going on?" She asks as they walk.
Elra Skylash - Human Cleric | Vanzaren Tanidoni - Half Elf Wizard
