Thanks!! When we get to the end of the Cold Open, I'll ask us all to check in regarding mechanics & other factors. I want this to be fun for everyone!
Ka’imi notices that Varielky has a healing potion on her person, and he quickly uncorks the tiny bottle and feeds its contents to the swordswoman. Varielky is up!
You see a force of several dozen Dreyens gathering in the woods to your east, perhaps drawn by the lightning bolt discharge, and more arrow fire falls among you, one of them fizzing strangely in the snow when it hits the ground.
The Sorcerer, a small, thin, older Shian woman named Mathara, dressed in traditional woven village garb under her Jenghen heavy cloak, moves to Dyn Gwelw just as his body starts to shudder in the throes of impending death. With the help of a large bandage she succeeds in stabilizing him, while telling you all in broken Jenghen, “I am gather these few healing potions from Orracan dead, and I try tend wound I pass. Check rest of you squad! I know one has potion too.” She motions 50 feet north to your fallen squad members.
While arrows begin to fall in your area, one of you dashes to your fallen allies -- past saving -- and remembers who among them had received potions just after the derailment. One unused bottle is rushed back to Dyn Gwelw, and he is revived!
The arrow fire increases, and you see many more Dreyens creeping toward you, as the bulk of your provincial force likewise nears, only 75 yards behind you, a few squads in between.
You turn to continue southward to the Dreyen village, when “FFFFT!” Mathara is struck in the back by an Ice Arrow. Her chest, where she was struck, emanates thick fingers of ice, and with an expression of gentle surprise on her wrinkled face, she falls forward, her heart frozen cold. Her wand drops to the ground beside her.
Mittens
You were trained to use Jenghen wands such as the one Mathara has just dropped. Unlike most magical items, Jenghen wands can be attuned by a Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard using only 1 Action, although you're not sure how to refill charges once used.
Varielky blinks, then quickly jump on her feet. "Now I'm mad. Attacking a warrior from behind while they're duelling? Straight down to hell! But, the fault is also mine. I should have been more careful. SQUAD! Let's move forward! Dying to a random arrow has no honour in it! CHARGE!"
Ednyss climbs to his feet and smiles at the ardor of the young Dreyen woman. He remembers a time when he once had the passion to lead a charge like this, but while he may no longer have the spryness to lead the charge, he can certainly help. Hefting his War Pick and shield he touches the emblem on his shoulder and senses that although Takal Demesh cannot provide much aid in the form of spells, that his presence is there. He lets out a furious roar, and taps into what little divine inspiration he can find before preparing himself to charge into battle alongside Varielky, "Live with honor! Die with honor! By the grace of Takal Demesh, we will not fall today!" Before they charge, he mutters to Varielky, "Fear not young one, for I will watch your back so that no scum can knock you from behind."
Mittens stands up after the potion reinvigorates him. Seeing that everyone around him is tended to, he begins mushing his way to the village when Mathara is struck down. "Oh crap!" he exclaims has he drops to the ground to dodge a few arrows. He sees the wand, and goes over to pick it up. He has been one day out, and he has already seen more violence then he ever had. "I'll get him for you," he whispers to the body as he stands with the wand. He turns back to where the archers are.
Ka'imi moves toward Ednyss and Varielky on what feels like a slow plodding path to the village.
"This is truly brutal, squad. My mentor Caudle would call this a rabbled cut, and tell me that sometimes a pruning would go awry but by the end of the growth cycle could heal itself back up. Let's hope we can get to the village and make the most of this rabble."
Seeing the rest of his group begin to turn back and faintly remembering (Ednyss is very forgetful) a commander urging them to get to the village, Ednyss sighs and begins to back away from the planned charge. He calls to Varielky as he backs away, "It is okay child. To rush now would be suicide and while there is glory in a death by battle, there is greater glory in victory. We must flee now so that we may return and be victorious." With that, he turns towards the village and begins to back away using his shield to deflect any arrows as he runs.

((OOC: not sure how much that potion heals for))
Mittens:
Detaching from physical reality for a moment, you send your Magical Intellect to drift in the Sea of Stars, searching for the wand. It seems, that the wand has already found you! It draws near almost immediately, and takes its place as a satellite orbiting your Intellect. When you open your eyes to physical reality, it is attuned. You realize it has only one charge remaining. Other than "fast attunement," the Jenghen Lightning Rod has the same stats as a Wand of Lightning Bolts.
With the other members of your squad killed, and Mathara frozen to death, only you five remain. Smoke emanates from the tree struck by Mathara’s lightning rod, and provides some cover from the Dreyen archers, but also makes it impossible to see who fired the fatal arrow that killed the life-saving sorcerer.
The company continues to move quickly forward, though the crowd has loosened up significantly, and you join their momentum, still near the front of the line. The woods have ended abruptly, and to your left is a snow-covered agricultural field--an apple orchard, though Ka’imi can sense that the bare branches have grown untended for two seasons at least.
Now that you are on more open terrain, most of the Dreyen foot soldiers are behind you, engaging your provincial allies or harrying them with missile fire.
As you crest a rise, the first outlying structures of a Dreyen village, which from a distance seems barren and unoccupied, are now plainly in view 250 yards to the south. There, you see a few provincial squads crossing under a small bridge at the edge of the village, with Shirei-Kin’s purple-cloaked form at the lead, at this moment dispatching a Dreyen defender with his longsword.
As you run along the tracks adjacent to the orchard, you hear the howls and barks before you see new foes coming over a rise in the sloped orchard to the east. Sleds are pulled by teams of six wolves, rushing through the snow-covered arbor lanes, then turning to ride parallel to the provincial force.
On each sled, which looks like a narrow chariot-like walled platform on runners, stand two Dreyen fighters: a driver holding the reins in one hand and a war hammer or battle axe in the other; and an archer. Four of these sleds, whose walls are painted black, with large white Dreyen holy glyphs ornately inscribed upon them, turn north to aid in the assault on the bulk of the provincial force, which, harried by the Dreyen archers, is falling behind you by perhaps 75 yards. But two of the sleds turn south and are coming upon you from behind.
Just at this moment, you reach a scattering of dead bodies on the tracks at your feet, both Dreyen and Provincial, from a melee which must have ended mere minutes ago.
-You think the sleds can probably cross the tracks but might in some spots have difficulty doing so. They can likely traverse the green lines (arbor paths) on the area map, but not the arbor itself (white areas marked “snow-covered farmland”).
-The sleds will move at their Driver’s Initiative order. The Driver can attack with advantage to a target they come within 5’ of (“charging attack”). While on the sled, Driver is ducking (“prone”) and has 1/2 cover from missile attacks, and can stand, attack, then “duck” after their attack for 1/2 cover. (1/2 cover = +2 to AC ad DEX saves)
The archer can “duck” (1/2 cover = +2 to AC ad DEX saves) then stand, fire, then “duck” again.
Immediately following a melee attack by the occupants, you can melee attack the occupants as a [Reaction] Opportunity Attack, if the sled is within 5’. You may attack with missile weapons at any time (OOC: to confirm, they are out of range of darts or other thrown weapons right now.)
-The wolves are either dashing or moving & taking the Dodge maneuver. They are harnessed in 3 rows of 2 wolves each. If a wolf dies, I will allow the Driver, with an Action, to release the leash of the animal, leaving it behind. This will negate the “charge” bonus that round, but will allow the sled to keep moving.
-The sled's movement rate is 40’
-Do you want to change your positions relative to each other, or cross behind the tracks, as the sleds come into view? They are now 150’ away and closing.

(OOC: Ah, ok! That's great. And I forgot it's a cantrip so you don't lose anything by casting it. All good.) Ednyss' feels a warmth in his belly and knows that Takal Demesh is near, ready both to stoke the fires of his passions and give him strength, or, to welcome Ednyss home if he should perish in battle.
Varielky gets into stance, putting her shield in front of her, covering most of her body. With her other hand, she holds her longsword ready. "Don't worry! They may be many but the gods are still on our side! AND REMEMBER! Dying on the battlefield is the most honourable death you could wish for!"
Varielky will try to deflect/block any attack that comes at her. Also, if a sled comes by, she'll attack the wolves as they pass by, granted by the opportunity attack.
As the party party runs on, Mittens shouts out to them between gasps for air, "Hey guys, I have a Lightning Rod I can blast them with." As everyone decides to halt in place and stand their ground against the charge, Mittens runs behind Varielky and falls to his knees. He peers around her legs and aims the wand at the incoming sleds. He sticks his tongue out and closes one eye as he focuses on the Dreyen. "Just need to line'em up..." he says to himself.
Movement: put Valiekry between him and the sleds ((OOC: not sure if I can technically do this, but since I'm small, can I use her as cover?))
Action: Hold a lightning bolt until the first else comes into range. DC 15 Dexterity Saving Throw or take 26 lightning damage. The lightning bolt also ignites stuff not worn. ((OOC: I'm hoping I can at least hit all the wolves and the drivers on one sled. The bolt is 5 feet wide, and the dog's on dog sledding usually don't spread too widely apart. I think I can hit most of them, but it's up to you.))
This onslaught doesn't appear to be stopping, and Ka'imi runs 10 ' back across the tracks, readying his longbow and hoping to be able to make the shot that will cause an avalanche or upended sled or possibly an errant bird flying overhead.
"It feels like we can do this - it's not that far to the village!"
(OOC: You all can take a moment to strategize if you wish, to make the most effective attacks. Here are some questions:
Ka'imi: Just to confirm, the sleds are within regular range of your longbow. Do you want to roll to hit & damage? If so, please state your exact target (& see Mittens' action below).
Mittens: You have a slight dilemma. Here are the mechanics underpinning the problem. 1) Both Drivers go after you in initiative order. 2) If you ready a spell, you must cast it that turn. Here are the potential snags. A) If they only move 40', they will not end their turn within range. They'll be 110' away, farther than your range of 100'. So you would lose the spell. B) If they don't advance directly toward you, you might have to move to keep them lined up. C) Here's a possible solution. You could move toward the left sled 25', keeping it in line, and in that case it should enter your range unless the driver decides to do something unexpected. In other words, you would have to advance to a spot directly in front of the charging wolves and sled to get off your attack this turn. Do you?
Valkiery: Will you move to a cover position for Mittens (25' toward the left sled)? As per above, you would have to advance to a spot directly in front of the charging wolves and sled!). You won't be able to get off an attack this round, even if the driver decides to Dash. So you could take the dodge maneuver if you want and still provide cover for Mittens. (The 5e mechanics for blocking or deflecting an attack do not fall within your character's capabilities. However you can take the dodge action and RP it so that you're "blocking" and "deflecting"). )
Also, can everyone please make an Investigation Saving Throw against DC10.
