Jared
"Does anyone have any idea what this is all about?" Jared will call out to the gathering folks who are defending those attacked. (he is still swinging his chair to fend off the rats from attacking folks)
Jared will also look around to see if there is a response from the Town Watch. Perception: 16
Ann continues to attack the swarm near the halfling woman dealing 5 damage
Jared will go WWE on those rats and give 'em the chair! For 1 damage. You also glance around and see:
In the 30 seconds that have passed since the beginning of the incident, no town guard has shown up beyond the guards at the courthouse. As a resident, you know that most of the guards when not actively patrolling are stationed in the courthouse or in the square, and probably had their hands full managing and protecting the people that fled there during the crisis.
Bryn does 3 damage to the swarm nearest Vedui with another well-placed arrow.
Jormund's hammeragain finds only cobblestone as the rats have grown wary of the hulking mass of metal.
Vedui, in an attempt to deescalate the situation, asks the musician to attempt to move the swarm of rats out of town. The musician looks at you over the top of the pipes, and in between breaths he says "No Thanks... I'll stick with... the dwarf... with the fire hammer!"
Rowan, your concentration pays off and you manage to string together a solid line of fire through the rat swarm, dealing 9 damage and scattering the rest of the swarm to the wind.
Quinry continues his fisticuffs, dealing 5 damage to the last swarm and dispersing it with a flurry of fists and angry halfling.
No active swarms remain in the market. However, the stage is filled with as many rats as you have already fought, still intent on the musician's song. The market is suddenly almost peaceful once again, with only the sound of the pan flute, and the occasional moan of the silversmith lying next to his cart. At this moment of pause, the market is largely empty with the exception of you 7 and the silversmith. You now must decide what to do with the continued rat, and rat-man, situation.
Rowan tentatively approaches the dwarf, staying on horseback just in case the other rats break from their trance and she needs to make a quick retreat. "I'm so sorry, did I hit you at all? I'm still getting the hang of... all of this."She gestures vaguely to her wand and the chaos dying down around them. Once he responds, she continues. "Do you have any idea why this is happening?"
"I have no idea what is going on but, I reckon it is some sort of distraction," Jared says. Jared will check on the Silversmith and then look towards the stage. All the while Jared maintains his grip on the chair so he can have a weapon at hand if need be. "Anyone have an idea on how to deal with the Rat King and his enthralled cohorts? Jared will ask out loud.
Ann lowers her blade, but she doesn't put it away. She looks at the halfling talking, with her gaze shifting towards the crowd of rats left sometimes. "I and the two I've guarded up to this town just got here. I know nothing about any of this. I'd like to finish the last group of rats before they cause more trouble, and then we can send the musician to someplace that'd promise a cure to his condition."
Ann is just waiting to go after the last swarm, but the others are holding her in place with their conversation, so she stays still.

He smiles at the lady tiefling on the horse. "No bother miss. I saw you singe at least of few of these varmints. I haven't the faintest how or why. But it seems certain to be magical in nature."
Jared "I have no idea what is going on but, I reckon it is some sort of distraction," Jared says. ... "Anyone have an idea on how to deal with the Rat King and his enthralled cohorts? Jared will ask out loud.
Turning to the halfling armed with a chair, "Why d'ya think it a distraction? I dunna know if he's worthy the title of a king, but his music seems to keep 'em civilized. Shall we ask him to usher them out of town?"
Turning toward the rat-musician, the dwarf attempts to look him in the eyes and shouts, "Oy! How 'bout leading them out of the town proper, eh?" and he points with the top of his hammer down the road going south out of town.
Jormund then stoops to check on the state of the fallen market-goers. If there's at least one not fully gone, he touches the forehead of the one in worst condition, whispers something, and casts spare the dying.
From there he stands, nods at the wood elves & woman with the rapier who helped him in battle in a gesture of respect, and starts to walk to escort the rat-man away.
(OOC: Half of them. With the other half, Ann wants to fight it, and two other people want to lead it out of the town with the musician's help since he's still controlling them.)
Vedui smiles at the Dwarf and looks back at the muscian...."Well, it looks like dwarf also wants you gone....."
Vedui will try to lead them towards a ford across a stream if he knows of one, with the idea to loose the rats at this location....If he doesn't know he will ask Bryn...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Bryn keeps an eye on the musician still unsure of whether he’s friend or foe. He also looks around the marketplace to see there anything that just doesn’t seem right or is out of place..... other than what just happened of course.
Rowan follows after the dwarf, curious to learn more about his magic. Her shopping can wait, plus, she needs a minute to figure out how to explain all of this to Quinry. "I saw you casting some spells as well. Could you tell me more about them? And how you did it? If you don't mind, that is."
"I saw you casting some spells as well. Could you tell me more about them? And how you did it? If you don't mind, that is."
Jormund pauses to face the tiefling woman and says, "Hello anew and well met. I am Jormund of the family Edgebeveller of the clan Battlehammer, formerly of Mithril Hall."
The dwarf bows slightly, but courteously, and continues, "The magic that you have seen me use is given to me by Moradin Maker, that I may strengthen the World-mail, forging links of good to strength and discarding links of weakness or ill-will. The magic is not really mine, but a quality of my service to the Forge-father."
Here he raps his hammer gently against his shield with a solid thump. "I receive it by heart service and intention to battle for the greatest good. And the well and ill the magic makes is a constant reminder that my awareness of the truth of the Mail must ever be grown."
"What clan or cause do ye serve? How are you called? And how come ye by yer art? Perhaps ye'll tell me as we walk...?"
Rowan slides gracefully down from the back of her horse, opting to lead it alongside her as they walk away from the town square.
"Well met, sir Edgebeveller. I am Rowan of house Querreth of Waterdeep." She returns his bow with a smile. "My magic comes not from the gift of a god, but from research and writings. I've been studying the techniques of mages past and using them to create my own incantations. It's slow work, especially without anyone to guide me, but the results have been worth it."
She produces a small leather-bound notebook, barely the size of her hand, and flips through a few of the pages. Most contain intricate runic designs, sigils, and notes in neat cursive.
"As for my cause, I suppose I haven't found one yet. My family wants me to live quietly as a wife and grow their wealth, but I don't think that's my calling."
Jared moves closer to Jormund, still brandishing his chair, and says:"Doesn't seem odd that there are a bunch of rats, coming from the sewers I assume, and attacking everything in sight, in the bright of the day? I"m no rat catcher but, I don't think their behavior is normal. And as for the musician." Jared pauses for a moment."He hasn't been reacting as someone truly directing the rats, more like a victim in all this. So, that leads me to suspect there is more than meets the eye in all this."
Jared will give a quick nod to Rowan. "Jared L.Talon, Chef of the Boar & Tankard."Jared introduces himself.
After examining the carnage, Jormund you discover that Marcin the fruit merchant still clings to life, and stabilize him with your magic. Jared, you tend to the silversmith, who gratefully accepts your aid. "Many thanks, young Sir, both for your aid and for my life. My name is Argenti, and my life, and goods, are at your service. If you are that good with a chair, perhaps a real weapon would be better? And he presses a Silver Dagger into your hands. He calls to all of you. "My shop is always open to you, and Argenti does not forget a friend!"
The halfling shepherdess you saved continues to herd her sheep away from the swarm of rats, but not before thanking all of you. "Opilios my name. I don't have much but my goats to offer as thanks, but if you ever need anything that can be shorn, worked, or milked from a goat or any other animal for that matter, I'm your woman. Please, I see several of you have naught but fists to guide this swarm out of Amphail, please take a spare Quarterstaff or 2 from my pen here. I keep them for my boys to play with when they come to visit, but they won't mind making new ones when they hear this story!"
At Jormunds request, the musician begins tentatively moveing through the throng of rats and off the stage. The rats part like a gray, furry sea, and follow like so many tiny sheep. As you go, you make introductions to each other.
Where do you wish to guide the swarm? There are hills to the south of town, small, rounded cousins of the Sword Mountains to the West. To the North, there is the Long Road through a pastoral countryside, and about 4 hours journey to the East lies the nearest significant river in the area, the Dessarin. Small farms and ranches dot the countryside on all sides.
As you walk, the musician remains silent unless spoken to, focused on piping and walking at the same time.
((OOC: We are out of combat for the moment, and if you needed to run somewhere in town to grab personal items (Probably not shopping) You could do so and still catch up with the group))
"My Thanks Good Sir. I am always glad to serve."Jared tells Argenti as he tucks the dagger into his belt. He rushes over to find his other dagger as well. "I'll catch up. I suggest the Rat-Prince lead those rats out of town and towards the hills to the south."Jared yells back as he rushes back to his apartment to get his gear. Along the way, he will check on Boris. Once those two tasks are finished Jared will rush back to catch up with the party.
"Sorry!" Rowan calls out to the dwarf, noticing that her attack caused him to miss his. She hopes she didn't accidentally hit him... She tries to aim her next fire bolt more carefully, brow furrowing with concentration.
