"There are only four of us, though. And by the sound of it, those inside are busy and not hunting us. Do you have any means to lock the door from outside? May be freezing it in place? Or cover with a rockslide?"The whole situation with necessity to spy did not sit well with the priestess, but a potential murder on top was making it worse. "I doubt those people are peaceful villagers and goblin's presence speaks for itself. That prisoner is a big argument to go there too... Do you think we can talk to them first? I can try."
"If they have a pet, it might catch wind of us pretty fast... that said if they're in a group (line), I do have a trick that could give us a leg up... but I'm guessing their prisoner is going to be sacrificed sooner or later... If the door has a lock I could try tripping the lock but that won't hold long. I doubt talking will help much; unless we want it as a distraction. It'd be nicer to lure out and take them out but unlikely."
Vanys shakes his head to the priestess, "I don't have anything to lock the door. Although I'm not even sure I agree with the sentiment of negotiation. I am all for saving the lives of innocent people, but these people have at least one prisoner in there, and I think their wolf might already have a sense that I noticed them. Besides, if it comes down to our lives versus theirs, I am choosing ours every time."

"Miri, I like your idea. But what Red and Van said makes sense" Mia gently touches her friend's body. "I'm a druid. I know wolves. They are great friends and formidable enemies. It's only a matter of time before they find us. If let this opportunity slip, we would be one who get ambushed next time. But don't worry! I know a trick to overturn our disadvantage. Do you remember Entangle?"Mia points to the stone floor with her index finger. "I can cast that spell on this ground. My plan is like this… one of us ( probably me ) becomes a bait and the rest of us hide behind the wall of the hallway. The bait lures the guys in the to open the door. I'll cast Entangle when they gather around the door and catch as much in my range as I can. Even if someone resists my spell, they will be separated from the others. Then we attack them with our ranged weapon. If we're lucky, they might slip on the stairs and make a big lump on their heads!"
Vanys readies himself as Mia approaches the door, and pulls out his crossbow. Aiming it at the door, he does his best to slip into the shadows on the walls of the tunnels and keep his crossbow trained on anything hostile that might come out of the door.
"I'll do it.. Its more believable if I walk in with a torch." remembering what his allies were wearing prior, " And I'm probably better equipped to take a hit. Hopefully the captured one stays quiet and they don't try a hostage." Red suggests to the group; Red's lack of vision in the cave is a clear detriment to being part of the ambushing side.
Red pulls his Torch, and readies to light it, then head to the door. Once all his allies are hidden and prepared.
(OOC; Red's vision is bollocks so he couldn't do much until he lights it anyway. He also probably has the highest AC, and can respond to a lot of occurances with his kit. If no one has objections, then I'll post ~how~ he opens the door I'm also holding off incase anyone else wants to roll a stealth, or change their ready trigger. So far I see: Red open door. Vanys will shoot someone who enters the door area. Mihiris will Bless when Red opens the door. Mia will Entangle once they get closer to the door. Yes?)
(OOC: Vanys isn't planning to actually shoot as soon as they open the door. The aiming of the crossbow is mostly just for intimidation purposes if needed. He figures they should at least give them a chance to declare themselves as innocent. If they just attack on sight, then he will shoot.)

The companions debate and then tense up as Red creeps forward in the shadows. He touches the flimsy wood latch and flips it, opening the door wide as you hear the sudden shift of movement and the growl of the wolf inside. The ones dressed in dirty white and blue robes are surprised and clumsily stumble to their feet reaching for their blades, while the goblin is already standing and angrily baring his sharp teeth at you, seemingly alerted by the building growl of his wolf companion, meanwhile, the shivering tabaxi prisoner seems to awaken from a troubled slumber. Also, now able to observe inside the room, there is another door behind the goblin, to the northeast.
((Go ahead and roll Initiative. The robed figures (nevermind the red icon) reach for their blades as as they stumble to their feet, they've been surprised. The goblin has been alerted by the wolf's sniffing and growling and stands snarling and ready to strike along with his pet. The prisoner seems to just have been disturbed from unconsciousness.))

“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
(OOC: Not sure if a readied action would be part of the surprise round, or before it...)
((Me neither, but I guess it kinda takes place in a "Round -1" since you had time to prepare an Action before surprise round (Round 0). It is clear that they're not happy about being caught by surprise, by someone uninvited into their turf. Also, consider line of sight as the corridor is pretty tight, currently everything has at least half cover due to Red being there, but even when he moves back the walls and natural column might be in the way.))
You hear the shifting of the robed figures moving inside the chamber, their shapes casting shadows in the candlelight as they immediately look over to their weapons nearby. The goblin, alerted by his wolf companion, stands snarling at Red's question with sharp teeth and reaches for the crude shortbow hanging across his shoulders, while the wolf growls, its head down low and ears back, waiting only for a command from his master to lunge at you.
Vanys is up!
((All enemies had not had the time to actually reach their weapons, but as far as you can see it seems to be their intent, their eyes immediately search for them as Red opens the door, the Goblin is also quicker to react and about to get his bow. It's your call if this was enough to trigger your Readied action from before. Also, only the Goblin seems to have caught sight of your trio standing back there in the dim light.))
Vanys releases his bolt at the goblin, who is clearly the most expecting of the creature's in the room, and perhaps the most obviously aggressive. He then drops the crossbow back onto his belt and narrows his eyes, letting some psychic energy gather in his palm. Muttering an arcane phrase under his breath, the energy disappears from the half-elf's hand and attempts to drive itself into the mind of the goblin. If he manages to kill the goblin, he growls to the robed figures, "Your weapons are not needed for talking. Put them down." He doesn't approach the room though.
Reaction: ReadiedAttack (Light Crossbow) (Against Goblin) Bless: 2 Attack: 15 Damage: 10 Advantage Attack Roll if Stealth Before Combat Succeeded (Roll = 9): 6
Action: Cast Mind Sliver (Against Goblin) Goblin must make a DC 13 Intelligence Saving Throw; On a failure, Goblin takes 3 Psychic Damage
The goblin grabs his bow, draws it closing one eye for aiming, when suddenly a thick crossbow bolt whooshes past Red's hair and thuds inside his open eye socket, a trail of dark blood streaming down his twisted face as he crumbles down on the cold stone floor. You hear one of the robed figures snort at the shot, "Hah!" in a raspy voice, as a pool of blood starts to form around the goblin. Though startled at just what might be coming from the corridor, the robed figures seem to have held no particular loyalty towards the goblin and are still rushing for their weapons, the one behind the natural column shouts "You'll regret coming here!"
((The Stealth succeeded against everyone BUT the Goblin, but the 9+4+2 was enough to hit, and the 10 enough to drop him. Your Action is still up for your turn in the surprise round since the target of your Mind Sliver is down.))
With the robed figures still reaching for their weapons, Vanys switches his attention to the only other threat. Stepping in front of Mia, he peers around Red to get a glance at the wolf before muttering an arcane phrase under his breath and letting a spike of psychic energy pierce the mind of the wolf. He replies to the robed figure, "Fine. But this was your choice."
Action: Cast Mind Sliver (Against Wolf) Wolf must make a DC 13 Intelligence Saving Throw; On a failure, Wolf takes 3 Psychic Damage and must subtract 1d4 from his next saving throw
The growling suddenly stops as Vanys mutters unintelligible words and the wolf flinches and cries in pain, seemingly out of nowhere. The beast shakes his scarred fur and opens his eyes again, spotting his unconscious companion nearby with a mixed reaction.
