"Hello they on the walls! Do ye have room for a small party to rest a while and to share news of the state of Chult? We also have a small bit of news from camp Righteous. It's no happy but someone may find comfort in it?"
Gotur's been pondering that jug while paddling. Why would a jug of lamp oil have that many spouts? For wicks? Seems dangerous. Maybe it isn't just left over lamp oil, maybe it's some sort of special lamp oil or something? Maybe something they folks at this camp would want? Weird for it to be on the pedestal behind all those traps, maybe it's got some magic to it?
He inspects it again when they pause for lunch.
Arcana: 4
Either way, he'll make sure it's stowed and hidden as they approach the camp, just in case.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
DM:Forged in Chaos, Spiders of the Abyss, The Sundered Way, Champions of the Citadel
Phillip gets out of the boat slowly and lingers towards the back of the group. He also makes sure that he has his camouflage cloak on and he pulls the hood up a little, wrapping the cloak around his body too.
He can’t really hide that he is a Grung, but he will try and make sure it’s not immediately obvious.
These people are possibly harassed by bands of Grungs week in week out. So he’s keeping a low profile. Just playing it cool. Not skulking. Standing proud. But near the back, mostly covered and with his weapons all stowed.
Alton stays by Philip towards the back of the group, a dagger ready in the folds of his cloak. He gives the small grung an encouraging smile as well, as they walk up to the camp, but stays back and allows Evo to do the talking.
Phillip looks left to Alton, and right to Gotur. He smiles his wide smile and nods, ‘thanks’, to them both. He’s bolstered greatly by the presence of his friends, and very glad to be flanked by them in this situation that’s for sure.
((Sorry all for the delay! What I am going to do at this point is provide a bit of an info dump so we don't spend eternity at this camp with my slower pace. I will provide basic details about the scene and people around. There may (or may not) be some interesting side quests that one or more of your characters might be interested in, so have a read of it and then go ahead and respond accordingly. Also, if you want to RP with one or any of the NPC's in this camp, feel free to do so and I will respond back with RP. There are some interesting NPC's here for sure. If any quests are undertaken, I will add the appropriate pictures to the NPC tabs and on the map. Otherwise I won't bother and will do the same with the other locations we come to throughout our journey. I will only add pics/images if needed.))
7:00PM DAY 10
Azaka would've also chirped in following Evo, mentioning the Order of the Gauntlet and how she knows about what happened at camp righteous a few months back and that they party was just there, etc. etc. just piggy backing on what Evo is saying.
The guard responds: "The state of Chult is SHITE, my good man. Look around and see for yerself!"he points to the piles of charred human corpses around, and you can now tell that they are the remains of beasts and undead that must've attacked the camp. "Camp Righteous, you say? Hmmmmm..."and the guard tells you to wait, leaves and then comes back a few minutes later and opens the gate. "Aye, you can come in. Place is packed, but yeah, allies of the Gauntlet are always welcome. Suppose we can put you up for the night. Go see Niles when you head in. He'll take care of you all."
Gotur, you can't seem to figure out how this jug might work. Eku did say that she confirmed that it is magical, specifically from the school of conjuration. However, she doesn't know how the thing works or what it might actually be. Neither does Azaka.
Phillip, you camouflage your appearance as best you can with your cloak, but like you mention, it will be impossible to hide the fact that you're a grung. However, the guards, nor anyone in the camp, seems to mind. They seem to be focusing more on the wounded and the state of the camp.
Alton, you feel your familiar dagger in the fold of your cloak, ready in an instant should things get hostile. i wonder what mom is doing right now
Now that you are all inside the camp, you can see a lot more details. I've updated the map, and also here are more details about this place and the people:
The rampart under the palisade impedes the camp’s drainage. The entire compound is riddled with puddles and ankle-deep mud, which make it a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other vermin.
The animal pen consists of four sickly goats.
The hospital tents are filled with sick and dying soldiers of the Order. The acolytes tending the sick are themselves so ill and exhausted that they can’t make effective use of their magic.
The templar in charge is a devout worshiper of Tyr named Niles Breakbone (male Chondathan human), a man who’s dedicated to everything the Order of the Gauntlet. Aside from Commander Breakbone, the standard garrison at the base consists of fifty-eight people, though the actual number of effective warriors at any given time is usually lower due to sickness. Breakbone has two captains under his command: Ord Firebeard (male gold dwarf) and Perne Salhana (female Tethyrian human). Reporting to them is a fighting force comprised of eight veterans and twenty-four guards. This is supplemented by a religious corps of six acolytes led by Sister Cyas (female Chondathan human). Technically, the religious templars are part of the fighting force, but in practice, they spend most of their time tending the sick and wounded. Finally, the fort is supported by a ragtag troop of Chultan hunters and scouts consisting of fifteen tribal warriors led by Lorsa Bilwatal (female Chultan human) and Niles Breakbone’s longtime friend, Wulf Rygor (male half-elf).
Commander Breakbone has two immediate problems.
1. He needs you to carry messages and seven sick soldiers downriver to Port Nyanzaru. Each soldier is suffering from various jungle based diseases.
2. He needs you lead a detachment of his soldiers on a two-week patrol back in the direction they came from; their orders are to destroy any undead they encounter.
Please let me know who you might want to talk to, if anyone, and then we can take it from there. I am totally happy with the party just continuing on their journey the next day and not interacting here at all as well - we can say that the party told the commander all about their main mission with the curse etc. and that while they would like to help with the commander's immediate issues, there are more pressing matters that the party needs to attend to. The commander will be interested in your mission as he's heard many stories of this curse in Chult but just can't spare any of his people as he needs to keep this base reinforced.
You can also decide if you told the commander about what you found at camp righteous or not.
Anyhow - let me know what you want to do! If nothing here, the party will say their farewells and continue their journey on the morning of DAY 11, 8:00AM.
Evo would go to whoever is in charge and present them the symbol of Torm.
"Found it in the ruins, thought ye would like it back. Also found a lad down the latrine holes. He was too far gone to identify but he was wearing the armor of yer order."
Looking around he also asks to see the sick and injured to offer his aid together with Gotur.
What they got? (Medicine check): 6
He'll agree with Gotur that that are on a mission but will assure them that they are also ridding this place of undead.
((Same number of lesser restorations from Evo to share today along with regular healing if it helps anyone.))
Phillip is deeply saddened by the scene he sees before him at the camp. If Evo and Gotur are able to help or cure any number of soldiers he will be impressed beyond measure and they would go up further in his esteem (if that’s even possible).
Phillip too, would be interested if the 2nd mission is in the direction the party are headed or back the other way?
He will also offer the following services if it looks like they would make even a slight difference:
- he would supply any amount of clean fresh water from his decanter if they have vessels to hold it.
- he would use shape water to purge some areas of the camp of standing water.
- he would whip out his tongue and eat insects and mosquitos
- he has up to 9x individual bolts of magic missile that he would gladly aim at vermin (3 at a time)
- assuming he can restock any spent arrows from the camp itself, he would spend any remaining time shooting his bow at other rats, vermin and pests around the camp.
If any or all of the above seems futile, then he would focus his aid elsewhere, but he would do whatever he could in the time that they have to help the soldiers while he’s there.
He will also brainstorm longer term ways that the camp could better survive out here under jungle conditions ((Survival (jungle) check (if needed): 25 ))
Although Alton doesn’t have any special skills or spells, he will do his best to go around and help the residents of the camp like the rest of the group by offering comforting words to the injured or sick as well as just someone to talk to.
Other than that, he is perfectly fine going along with the decisions of the group (and would agree that getting to Omu and stopping this death curse should be first priority despite the suffering occurring here).
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Gotur and Evo, you both are able to help with the sick and wounded.
Evo, you find out what specific diseases they have by inquiring with the acolytes, but I think given that roll, you don't know much about them specifically. They are: mad monkey fever, shivering sickness, and throat leeches. Perhaps you know a bit about mad monkey fever from that mist the party avoided when they first set out on the river, if you recall.
There are currently 12 patients split between the two field hospital tents. (Those 2 circular ones). The help that you both provide is greatly appreciated, especially at the fact that both of you used magic to help. The lesser restorations were a huge help, and the regular healing was also quite welcomed. They are also asking if you can spare any healing potions. Will either of you give any to them? If so, how many? They cannot provide any type of compensation for the potions, they're just asking you to generously donate them.
Gotur, the other escort mission is to essentially sweep for undead for two weeks. Technically, the sweep could be done at the same time as going back to Port Nyanzaru. The commander tells you he doesn't care where the sweep is done, as long as it's done in an undead zone.
Phillip, your clean water, de-insecting, vermin killing and general helping out is very much welcomed by the folks in the camp and some of them are quite amused at the little grung going around helping. Your assistance is not futile in the least. They are more used to being ambushed by grungs, like you mentioned earlier, and like how the party was just a few days ago. So this is quite the welcomed change. As for the survival check, I think the advice you're able to give them about the standing water and ensuring that doesn't happen will go a long way. They need to be cleaner which will prevent some of the diseases they encounter.
Alton, you are able to comfort the sick with your conversation and probably get just as much out of the talks as the patients do. Some of the guards as well would be interested in conversation and they might welcome a story or two of your travels, specifically an action-based one, which you provide. Azaka and Eku would actually come with you and do the same thing, engage the residents with conversations in an attempt to get their spirits up.
Gotur, Commander Breakbone responds "I can't say that I am not disappointed... but I do understand. It was a long shot to even ask. Anyhow, I do appreciate all of the help that you've all provided to our sick and wounded, and for that we will be ever grateful." he takes the symbol from Evo and thanks you. He listens about the person in the latrines and sighs. "We lost a lot of good people there, friend. Thank you... again. And yes, should you come across any undead, if at all possible, please rid them from the jungle. The smaller the undead numbers in Chult, the better chance we all have at surviving out here. I wish you all the luck and skill in your quest. All of you."
Ok, I think that about does it at this camp.
DAY 11, 8:00AM
The Order of the Gauntlet bids the party farewell. You would've all got a long rest at the camp. Eku is getting excited as the party is nearing Mbala. Perhaps only 2 days travel. "The Nanny shall soon meet her fate." She looks on the map and it seems the party can travel a bit more south on the river and then they will have to portage it west towards the ruins of Mbala.
She is happy to travel at a normal speed, however. "Let us ensure we are strong and at the highest alert. Who knows what the witch has creeping about the lands."
1. Direction = South on river, and then Southwest to begin the trek to Mbala.
2. Speed = Normal
3. Navigator = Not needed for first part as travelling on the river, and then Phillip will take lead, no roll required due to favored terrain feature.
4. Encounters? = 10 (18) / 20 (69) / 4 (49)
Lastly, Eku will now give you more background on Mbala now that the party is only a few days away. She likely would've told you this information at camp vengeance, in private.
If you recall, Eku had great love and respect for the people of Mbala, who were tricked and eaten by a green hag named Nanny Pu’pu. Once a beautiful village, Mbala is now in a state of ruins, inhabited by the witch and whatever other creatures she might have with her. The ruins are located atop a 1,800-foot-high mountain (Azaka sighs...) however, a narrow path is cut into the cliff face which will take us all the way up. (Eku's never had a problem since she can fly). She hasn't returned there for quite some time, and so can't give really any other details other than that. Who knows what the witch has done with the place since. She will likely be more help as the party gets closer, however.
((I've been thinking... a level up will soon be in order. The party hasn't met much adversity as of yet, although you've been through a lot, and now have a handful of locations completed. Start thinking about L6 choices as it's going to be happening soon.))
I will post the results of the day 11 encounter rolls ASAP! Happy to answer any questions in the meantime, and Gotur/Evo let me know about the potions.
((If we use all 5 the night before, two more each clears them up, but would put us down a few slots of we leave to face Nanny the day that we leave...))
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
DM:Forged in Chaos, Spiders of the Abyss, The Sundered Way, Champions of the Citadel
Phillip helps out, for as long as the party are at the camp…
He would ask one small favour in return… … he’s been meaning to try and make, or get hold of, a sling and sling bullets. And if the camp have such a thing (or the wherewithal to make one), he would gladly pay for it.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Evo and Gotur, they are extremely grateful for the potions, and equally as grateful for the spells. This will go a long way in helping the camp. Yes, you will be able to have a long rest without issues on this next day of travel, as there are no encounters, so you are able to cure all of the ailments with magic and get all of the spells back during camp. They thankfully accept Evo's potions and Gotur's berries. You have cured all of the sick!! (++ Order of the Gauntlet, I think you could add to your character sheets that al of you are now affiliated with this Order.)
Eku responds "That is a good point. Still... I need to check. We need to check. It's where I know she was last, and I can't see the witch leaving. It is... was... a beautiful place. Worst case we can show our respects to the fallen people of Mbala."
Azaka responds "Thanks for thinking of me Evo. I think I should be fine, as long as what Eku is saying about the narrow path that exists is true. And of course, I won't be able to look down." she smiles but is now uncomfortable thinking about this. "You all helped me in my quest, I will help with this one."
Phillip, the guards in the guard tents would've been the most amused at the grung, but at the same time, impressed with how different you are compared to the grungs they've encountered in the jungle. To them, you're like a grung version 2.0. They have a bunch of slings in stock, sometimes some of the more experienced scouts here use them, and so one of the guards gives you a sling and a handful of bullets. "Something to remember us by, yeah?!" this is a regular sling, but has the order's symbol engraved into the leather strap where the leather meets the base of the sling. You get 20 bullets with that.
DAY 12 - 8:00AM
Are you portaging the canoes? Or leave them by the river when you started NW towards Mbala? All of this stuff would've been discussed during the travels, along with what might potentially be next after Mbala. Eku and Azaka suggest potentially going to Orolunga to see the guardian naga who has a vast amount of knowledge and can likely help with the main quest or at least provide information about what might be awaiting us and/or information on the soulmonger. In that case, the party would not need the canoes, although you'd have to leave them for days on end.
Also, you can see as we move further south towards the ultimate goal of Omu, the map will not be visible until it's travelled, adding an element of surprise as to what the terrain might hold.
So, you are on land now. 1 hex for normal travel per day, 2 for fast. (yesterday's travel included 1 hex on river and 1 hex on land)
Eku will suggest we travel at normal speed, and arrive at Mbala on the late afternoon of day 13. This will require 2 days worth of encounter rolls, which I will do now to move this along. If there are encounters on day 12, I will just keep the day 13 rolls for later when we resolve the day 12 encounters.
Day 12 Rolls
12 (44) / 3 (13) / 11 (7)
Day 13 Rolls
13 (3) / 12 (86) / 3 (12)
I will post the results of the rolls in a new post.
Evo will take the lead if no one objects,
"Hello they on the walls! Do ye have room for a small party to rest a while and to share news of the state of Chult? We also have a small bit of news from camp Righteous. It's no happy but someone may find comfort in it?"

Evo would hand over his healing potion and use a couple more lesser restorations if there were people in need of that, though not all five slots.
"We will clear any and all undead we come across Commander! We hope to see ye again on our return."
To Eku,
"Ye think the hag is still there? Perhaps she's moved on?"
To Azaka,
"Is the trail up to Mbala going to be a problem for ye?"
((If we use all 5 the night before, two more each clears them up, but would put us down a few slots of we leave to face Nanny the day that we leave...))

((Ya, it was at least two days to get there, right? We should be okay for facing Nanny Poopoo.))
Phillip helps out, for as long as the party are at the camp…
He would ask one small favour in return… … he’s been meaning to try and make, or get hold of, a sling and sling bullets. And if the camp have such a thing (or the wherewithal to make one), he would gladly pay for it.
Aside from that, he’s happy to move on.

Alright, something happens in the morning of day 12.
I will resolve that in the next post, and then deal with day 13.
Perhaps the party will be at L6 before Nanny PooPoo after all.
