Ok so a bit of details about me... new to D&D and only played Homebrew from a guy in College (3.5e) like 5 sessions with friends. Started watching Critical Role DM'd by Matt Mercer about 20 episodes, and now my friends want to play D&D, im the one who was voted to DM cuz im the only one who is patient enough to learn everything necessary. So I decided to study 5th edition... I search many forums all the time for answers and try not to add repeated threads but honestly no cut and dry answer out there so asking here... anyways to the question at hand..
What exactly is secondary damage? for example: Longsword: Damage (1d8), Secondary Damage (1d10)
Does that mean the wielder will roll both die, a (d8) + (d10) + str (3) = 21 potential max damage?
It's a weird way of saying that you get the bigger die if you wield the sword in two hands (Versatile rule under equipment). You don't get both at once.
Thanks for the welcome as well for the help! Might of been a simple question but it helped me a lot and I appreciate it :) ... Ill continue to go through the forums for all my questions/needs, and restrict my threads to things I cant find or understand.
Back in older editions there use to be a move called Hay-maker which is a two handed attack with a single handed weapon or fists, it would do extra damage,. The Versatile weapons means the weapon is able to be wielded either one or two handed. If wielding one handed long sword 1d8 +str or if wielding it with two hands 1d10 + str.
Rule Loophole (Players will find it): Rogue Sneak attack (finesse weapon) Use two Rapiers for the 1d8 damage + dex + xd6 (sneak attack based on level)
Sneak Attack only applies once per turn, so you'd do 1d8+dex+xd6 with one rapier, and 1d8 with the second (or 1d8+dex, if the character has multiclassed into a class that gives them the Two-Weapon Fighting Style).

And anyway, you need a feat to dual-wield non-light weapons, like rapiers.

Hey there Subzeroblack,
you're in the right place - there are plenty of people here who are happy to help. :)
The weapon in question has the versatile weapon property, allowing it to be used either 1-handed or 2-handed for the slightly increased damage.

Of course, but what self-respecting Swashbuckler Rogue doesn't take Dual Wielder?! :D
