Whilst running through character creation after choosing the Feylost background, I noticed something for the first time:
Equipment: A musical instrument (one of your choice), a set of traveler’s clothes, three trinkets (each determined by rolling on the Feywild Trinkets table), and a pouch containing 8 gp.
Based on how it's written, it sounds like Feylost (and other backgrounds with that kind of phrase, "a pouch with X gold") should include the Pouch item from Adventuring gear, and in the Equipment tab of Character Creation the Feylost starting equipment DOES include an entry for "pouch containing 8 gp", but in practice it seems to just add a fluff entry for "Gold pouch" to the "Other Possessions" category.
Is this an oversight on DnDBeyond's part? or is there a separate coin purse-type pouch that I'm not aware of? I've tried Googling this, but I haven't found any relevant discussions yet.
D&D Beyond takes it rather literally and doesn't include things that should be obvious, like a pouch or quiver. You need to manually add those items, and they should be free.
DDB only started supporting containers recently. Before that a pouch would have been a useless item in your inventory as you couldn't put anything in it.
A lot of backgrounds add fluff items that doesn't get added as an item, but could (I do manually).
This should probably be moved to Bugs & Support, as it should be possible for this to be added automatically.
Backgrounds and the tools to implement them are a mess though so it's not that surprising there are bugs; the only way to create a homebrew background without going insane is to customise one that already exists, as the tools to edit backgrounds are probably the least user friendly of all the homebrew tools. I know they're really just dev tools that have been made public, and while most are okay to use (clunky but functional), backgrounds are maddening to try and create.

Some classes, like rogue, explicitly say the character is supposed to have a container, like a quiver for their 20 arrows. Other classes, like cleric, don't say they get a case for their crossbow bolts; should they choose a light crossbow. But everyone should get a pouch. I don't think there's a background which doesn't grant one.
Interestingly enough, Roll20 doesn't have this problem and gives everyone what they should have; both logically and explicitly.

Interestingly, there are some backgrounds that don't give a pouch! Just from the PHB, Hermit gives 5gp but no pouch, while Noble/Knight gives a purse of 25gp (whatever that would be.)

Haunted One has to keep their 1 silver piece in a heavy chest; the height of convenience for a monster hunter specialising in elusive, fast moving prey. 😂
At least that one seemed to be implemented fully (everything went into the chest automatically, only the trinket was added under other possessions iirc).

Jounichi has it - it's just a bug. You should indeed start with a pouch.
Oh good, I thought I was going crazy. Thanks!

It both is and isn't a bug.
