Hey there, so i have this question about artificers. At lvl 6 they can have 3 infused items at the same time. One of them is the Homunculus Servant, that basicaly can have any imaginable form but its a tiny construct. An other infusion is the Replicate Magic Item, that can be learned multiple times, and one of the first items you can replicate is the Bag of Holding. This bag can create a portal that sucks all creatures in a 10 ft radius to the Astral Plane if its placed inside another similar object.
The thing is, at level 6 the artificer can potentialy one-shot almost every boss in any campaing by creating a flying homunculus and sending it with 2 replicas of the bag of holding to activate the trick and send the biss and the homunculus to the Astral Plane. Homunculus cost Is a 100gp gem

Am i missing something here?
First off, a DM can totally prevent learning the same replicate item infusion twice, it is not RAI. That at least increases the price of the exploit...
Also, being sent to the astral plane is not a death sentence. Quite the opposite, you don't age or need food or sleep. There are a few dangers, but far fewer than most other planes. Furthermore, it takes 1d4 ×10 hours to find a portal to any plane of your choosing (though you don't get to pick the location within the plane).
Basically, the exploit becomes less inconvenient for enemies the stronger they are.

Nope, mechanically you're fine. Just bear in mind that uses up all 3 of your infusions at once, so you can't be rocking anything else.
Google "arrow of bag of holding" and you will see that this isn't a new technique, it has been around almost since D&D started. (Maybe not with artificers, who could only do it once a day.)

Not to mention, each usage would presumably destroy the "core" used for the homunculus servant, so you would have to replace the costly gem component every single time

Sure, im not going to use it, just wondering. My DM told me that he would not run sesions if i was doing that shit lol but i also wouldnt want a guy in my game ruining the fun for everyone.

Good point, but you can send him back unce per day paying a 100gp gem to rebuild the homunculus right? The party could mess with the dude's plans or stuff like that while he is away.
I think that as a DM i would throw in a second boss or something like that.
You can choose the build just to go and fight the big evil. But yeah, its not that useful to have 2 bags of holding. And its going to ruin the module to everyone else.
Its 100gp tho, its not that much rly. You can still have the other 3 useful infusions not activated in case you want to switch builds.
I mean, the DM ultimately controls how often you come across 100 gp gemstones, so how often you get to mess with the DMs plans by using this combo is dependent on the DM allowing you to make your servants. The first time this combo manages to one shot a boss and you make it apparent you intend to do so again, thats when the gemstones stop showing up in treasure piles and can only be found in tightly guarded vaults.

I had to go back and re-read exactly how infusions work to see if it was possible... Replicate Magic items overtly calls out that you can take that infusion multiple times, and there's no language that says you have to pick a different magical item to replicate each time you take that particular infusion. It's pretty wild, but RAW this totally works.
Honestly, if you take Battlesmith you can just have your Steel Defender do it... the Steel Defender doesn't cost anything and you get a free one as part of a Long Rest. You could basically pull off this trick once a day every day with the only cost being the need to stock up on sacks to convert into Bags of Holding.

Yeah, simplest fix for a DM is "sorry, we don't stock those anymore because of rumours about some nutter sending them into the astral sea causing massive price inflation". Kill your party's daft plans with economics. 😂

Bro thats insane xD you are totally right, i thought that steel defender was like the shield guardian that can only attack and dodge. With the battlesmith subclass you can pull off the trick at lvl 3 if im not wrong.
Im aware, we are talking here about the artificer and his replicate magic item infusion. You can send your homunculus or the steel defender to activate the portal inserting one BOH inside the other one.

Steel defenders can have absolutely any body shape, so you can even mount a bag where its mouth would be, give it arms and hands for grappling, and then stare into your DM's eyes and completely deadpan say "I order my Defender to eat the creature it's grappling" and wait for them to try and figure out what rolls would be appropriate, if any. You can mount a second bag as, functionally, a body part as well, for ezpz kamikaze attacks.

I am not 100% on the 5e rules for nesting pocket dimensions but I believe it would work as you describe.
However, I absolutely recommend asking the DM at any table you plan to join about this and being honest and upfront with them.
D&D is a group game and if the rest of the group isn't having fun then they aren't likely to want to play with you.

There are some fixes to that, like invisibility, sanctuary or using the steel defender from the battlesmith subclass
